What did people make of him today ?

He had a couple of moments where he looked good, and admittedly we're not really a team that can make the best of him at the moment given out lack of width, but I'm having some early concerns about him.

He looks painfully slow at times, his touch can be a bit wayward too.

As I said in the match thread he was in the right places and attempting all the right stuff he just looked dead and rusty.

It's definitely a matter of 'when'

He's never going to have the touch of kids brought up in Spain, but he makes up for it by winning every header ever and scaring the shit out of all the defenders.

I thought he looked alright and to say he had a gruelling 90mins on Thursday having just come back from injury, he put in a reasonable shift.

It's going to be hard to judge Carroll though because that price tag is going to weigh him down. For 35M you expect the sort of world class technique and ability that he just doesn't have. He is going to provide value as a battering ram and if we're lucky become a better 'footballer' along the way.

I agree Ross, I'm trying to fight those instinctive feelings I had when we were first linked with him. I worried that he might not be the right fit (like Robbie Keane). I felt we needed a quick and mobile striker.

Instead, Carroll looks slow, clumsy, flat footed and static, some of that could be down to fitness, but yeah, I share your early concerns

I'm not in a position to comment since I couldn't catch the entire match. Here's some numbers for viewing pleasure though. 😛

Carrol has won 4 out of 7 aerial duels and won 6 flick ons for Liverpool.

He got 11 goals in the league for Newcastle. I think he'll improve with fitness, but Ken's right - the price tag is going to be a problem for him - he can't live up to it and we shouldn't ask him to. It's not his fault we were forced to replace Torres.

He's not going to get better until the service we give him is better. Let's be honest here the service from wide areas was better at Newcastle than it is here.

The "service" was nothing to do with his first touch and losing possession.

Of course he'll get better.

And then with better service he can get better still.

I didn't think he looked painfully slow. It amazes me how simplistic people can be about footballers, unless you're Linford Christie-esque then you're 'slow'. I thought he showed good feet and awareness and battled for everything.

As robinhood suggests, the price we paid for Carroll was a reflection of the circumstances in which we bought him rather than a true valuation of his ability. I think most people (including the lad himself) are fully aware of that and I don't expect it to cause him, or us, any great problem as time goes on. He's in the best of hands with the King as his manager, and the Kop will make him a big favourite. This club is going places now, and Carroll will be a big part of that.

He just looked knackered to me, and his game fell apart because of that. Even today, though, when he was clearly off his game, he still won most balls in the air. When we provide him with decent service, he's going to be a huge penalty-area threat - perfectly capable, IMO, of scoring 20 goals a season or more. The greater difficulty may be getting him to fit in with a quick, progressive passing game. But let's face it, we're not Barca. If Kenny can get us playing as efficiently as his league-winning Blackburn side, then I think Carroll can do a very good job as a dominating (at times unplayable) no9.

He looked tired, and that's about it. It's a bit silly to start to extrapolate how he's going to play based on what he does after two games recovering from injury.

I disagree that he can't play on a faster, fluid team. He isn't as slow as people are making out, I actually don't think he's slow at all, and he will make lots of space.

I think as most have said already that the time to judge him when he fully fit and up to speed with our game.
I reckon I seen enough positive contributions from him today to be quite optimistic about how his Liverpool career wll pan out, £35m transfer fee and all.

The slow and clumsy comes from being out injured. He'll be fine. Actually got decent pace and a very good touch.

Give him 4-5 games to get into form.
