Police appeal for witnesses after fan suffers broken jaw in attack before Merseyside derby

A FOOTBALL fan suffered a broken jaw after he was assaulted before the start of the Merseyside derby.

Officers were called just before 2pm to reports of a disturbance on Anfield Road at its junction with Blessington Road.

Police said the injured man was taken to hospital where he was treated for a fractured jaw.

The area was cordoned off for several hours as forensic tests were carried out.

According to witnesses a large group of youths had gathered in Anfield Road before the start of the match which ended in a 2-2 draw.

They then launched an attack on the man, who was an Everton fan, as he made his way towards the stadium.

According to local reports at least two other people, who came to the man’s assistance, were also attacked by the youths.

Merseyside Police last night appealed for CCTV from the area and officers were speaking to witnesses to establish the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

Police said they were particularly keen to speak to anyone who was stood outside the King Harry pub prior to 2pm.

Match Commander Chief Superintendent Dave Lewis said last night: “Whilst we are dealing with an assault there were no further incidents during the policing of the derby match and both sets of fans on the whole behaved well pre, during and post today’s derby.

“Officers arrested five people for low level offences and ejected two people from the stadium.

"I’d like to thank today's fans for their behaviour on the whole and would appeal to anyone who has any information about the assault on Anfield Road, to come forward and contact detectives with any information.â€

Glad it wasn't worse.

True, we don't still need fan violence to tarnish our club image.

Yeah leave it to the lads on the pitch to tarnish the clubs image.

Good news noone was seriously hurt.

Actually, is a broken jaw seriously hurt these days or not?

I can't believe they shut Anfield Road for a broken jaw. Fuck me.

The Police love closing off roads, particularly when it causes chaos.

It was more than a broken jaw, when I walked passed there was a massive pool of blood. That doesn't come from a broken jaw.

The last caller to 606 last night suggested that someone had been killed.

Yeh those rumours were flying around. When I left the Harry about 1:45 we noticed that there was a load young lads hanging around. The bizzie prescence was low and they really should have got onto it although I don't ultimately blame them. It's these horrible little cunts who are sadly rife throughout our city. They had no interest in the game and I doubt they even went. They created what they were out for - trouble.

Those rumours about someone getting killed must have caused loads of bother last night.

There was murder in the King Harry afterwards though - my mate Dougie murdered Bon Jovi on the karaoke.

The "Echo" has updated the piece with more information. Nobody was killed, although there was a rumour to that effect that spread on Facebook. No doubt started by Bluenoses.

ONLOOKERS watched in horror as a group of thugs carried out an unprovoked attack on a football fan as he made his way to the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The sickening assault happened near to the King Harry pub before the start of yesterday afternoon’s match.

Witnesses described seeing a large gathering of youths, aged around 16 to 18 and clad from head to foot in black.

A number then ran down Anfield Road and punched the man to the ground, kicking him as he lay helpless on the pavement.

Two people who tried to come to the man’s aid were also beaten.

The victim was left with a broken jaw and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A pool of blood was still visible yesterday where the attack took place.

Police cordoned off the area at the junction of Anfield Road and Blessington Road for several hours for forensic examination which meant some fans faced difficulty leaving the stadium after the match.

The doorman at the King Harry, who asked not to be named, said: “There was a big gang of kids in black hoodies and it was obvious that something was about to go off.

“As the Everton fans were walking towards the away fans’ entrance some of these kids ran up the road and punched this man in the side of the head and then six or seven of them were kicking him all over the pavement.

“He was in a bad way and he was really hurt with blood coming out of his ear.â€

A tannoy announcement was made at the end of yesterday’s 2-2 draw to warn people that Anfield Road was closed by the King Harry pub because of an incident.

Liverpool FC fan Peter Brannigan, who regularly travels from Northern Ireland to watch matches, said: “I got a text from my brother-in-law in Northern Ireland asking if I was all right because he’d heard the tannoy announcement while watching the game on Sky TV.

“What’s happened is absolutely disgusting. This is the second time the pub has had to be closed even though it had nothing to do with what’s going on outside.â€

Some witnesses also criticised the police for having only two community support officers present in Anfield Road at the time of the incident.

Match Commander Chief Superintendent Dave Lewis said yesterday: “Whilst we are dealing with an assault there were no further incidents during the policing of the derby match and both sets of fans on the whole behaved well before, during and post the derby.

“Officers arrested five people for low level offences and ejected two people from the stadium. I’d like to thank the fans for their behaviour on the whole and would appeal to anyone who has any information about the assault on Anfield Road to come forward and contact detectives with any information they may have.â€

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lower Lane CID on 0151 777 4564/4565 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I saw that mob outside before you turned up. They were being monitored by a copper and a PCSO and one of the doormen seemed to be keeping an eye on them.

When I left there were plenty more and it seemed obvious that something would go off. On EST, they are saying that an Everton fan got a kicking in the pub before the game?

That's what I thought. Perhaps someone has misinterpreted outside for inside?

Crack out the riot gear and go get some good old police brutality, oorah!

I take it Skully is in custody ?

Ha, I thought of Skully too when I first saw that this morning.

Sadly, I bet this has got the backs up of the bluenoses. It fucks me off it does, a childish scally minority, who really have fucking NOTHING to do with football or the club - purely out for trouble - are going to cause shite. I just hope both sets of fans see sense and see this for what it is. Young lads out for trouble and nothing else. I've been drinking in the King Harry for about 8 years and never seen any bother in there or have I been involved in any. I don't care if these lads think they're Liverpool fans or not they're just horrible scum.

Was anyone with you or see you leave the area at the alleged 1.45pm Mr Sunny?
[/quote]

Ha, yes. I hardly qualify as an 16-18 year old as well mate

It was a bit thoughtless of the police to include the name of the King Harry into their announcements about the incident, as the pub does not seem to have been involved in any way.
