Chelsea & Arsenal could play off for third in the Premier League

The Premier League has confirmed there will be a third-place play-off match between Chelsea and Arsenal if the pair end the season with identical records. If Chelsea draw 0-0 on the final day of the season and Arsenal win 2-1, they will be level on points, goal difference and goals scored. The play-off winner would automatically reach the Champions League group stage.

Possible permutations

Chelsea, who are currently third and two points ahead of Arsenal, host Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, while the Gunners travel to Newcastle.

The teams who finish in the top three of the Premier League automatically qualify for next season's Champions League group stage.

The fourth-placed club enters the competition's third qualifying round.Any draw for the Blues, coupled with Arsenal scoring two more goals in a one-goal winning margin, would also leave the London rivals tied.Premier League rules state: "If at the end of the season... the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds.

The format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board."But finding a date for the potential play-off could pose a problem with Chelsea set to travel to the United States next week. The Blues are playing two end-of-season matches against Manchester City in St Louis and New York, while England also have friendlies on 29 May and 2 June against Republic of Ireland and Brazil. The Premier League added they would "have to find a solution".

What a load of bollox, a total money making scheme. It should go down to head to head, as Chelsea won those games they should be granted the third place.

What has that got to do with the FA ?

What has that got to do with the FA ?

Let face it the Premier League is run by the FA...

The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal

Would that 'neutral' venue be Wembley by any chance? The bean counters will be desperate for this to happen.Another massive corporate beano in the atmosphere-free steel bowl.

It's now the Barclays Premier League, are Barclays running it ?

If you go back to Wikipedia the bit you need to read is only a couple of lines under what you quoted

It probably should go to head to head, but as it's not in the rules before the season started, I'd imagine Arsenal would complain. Not much else they can do, I imagine it hasn't happened before, much like us finishing in 5th and winning the CL in 05. They changed the rules after that, even though the circumstance probably won't happen again.

it's not my fault that I bother to check facts before throwing out accusations.

So stop being a fuckwit Mystic

I'm not being a fuckwit, you are, again, that's the point. Your fetish towards acting as some sort of self appointed knowledge police in every thread you can is beyond tedious.

Right OK Trollco I stand corrected.

'Officially' the Premier League is not run by the FA.. See the Keyword.. Officially... ???

you missed the joke,

well done

It ridiculous.. shouln't even be contemplated.. Should go down to Head to Head..

Simples...

If this happens, watch play offs every year for 3/4 position.. They have been trying to find a way to push this through for ages...

It would be great for teams like us I guess because we could finish 6 and potentially have a chance to qualify for the Champions League...

3rd vs 6th
4th vs 5th

Winner of each play off Guarenteed Champions League place, just fight it out for who finisihes '3rd or 4th... '

Downside it could potentially kill the FA cup for good...

Hahahahaha it's time to go see if the Coutinho thread has tipped him over the edge. For all I know as I type this Rosco may already be in custody in a maximum security prison.

Its the rules, I dont see where the problem is.
And those rules are pretty much the same in every league in Europe.

Everything is about money. Even before the PL started. If Liverpool were in Arsenals position I'd want play-offs rather than a head to head.

Why would you want a Play-off to qualify for the Champions League.. when your in a position to have a Play off to qualify for the Champions League anyway...

Although I suppose 2 bites of the Cherry are better than one I guess..

There are play offs for promotions from other divisions aren't there.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is a play off for the final one or two Champions league spot at some point in the future if EUFA rules allow it.

Not in Spain.. Head to Head comes into it... even before GD...

Chamions League is Head to Head even before Goal differance..

So in effect should this...

I expect this to happen at some point..

Competition has become so fierce now for a Top 4 finish, the money that could be made by the PL alone for this makes it an attractive proposition..

They are desperate to Market the 39th Game.. this is essentially it...

Yep, 2 goes and you're in more control of your own destiny rather than relying on what you previously did 😵

Another chance to see your team play. Don't think that's a problem. Makes the players earn their huuuuuggge salaries 🙂

?? How is this the 39th game? Its a one off brought about by happenstance, i hardly think its part of the bigger nefarious plan. And to be fair Rosco is right (on this occasion at least) he is dead right, the Premier league broke away from the control of the FA twenty flippin years ago... Its nothing to do with the FA.

And whoever said it should go on head to head is right as well, although of course the losing side will their home receipts for the extra qualifying match i suppose.

i don't see the fuss tbh... I just wish we were in it.
