Manchester City owner's family 'eyes up takeover bid for Liverpool'

The Abu Dhabi royal family which owns Manchester City is believed to be weighing up a bid to buy Liverpool.

City are owned by one member of the Al Nahyan dynasty, Sheikh Mansour, but reliable sources claim the family are pursuing an interest in the Reds.

In order for such a deal to be sanctioned by the Premier League the family would have to prove the competition between City and Liverpool would in no way be affected.

But Premier League chiefs do not believe that would pose a problem, with one saying: ‘Sibling rivalry can be the strongest of competitive instincts.’

Liverpool’s current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett would want around £400million to sell the club but their price may drop if the club fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The family’s interest at Anfield was first reported in December but, according to one source, the purchase of City has been viewed as a great success in terms of raising the profile of Sheikh Mansour, and this has intensified interest in Liverpool.

The source said: ‘City is viewed as having been a good move and now the family are interested in Liverpool.

'In the Far East, it is Manchester United that are the big club but in the Arab world it is Liverpool most people are mad about.’

Hmm... what if they bought us and then sold Torres to City? This sounds really dodgy to me.

It sounds like fucking heaven to me.

I've constantly kidded myself it'd feel wrong if a sugar-daddy bought us & splashed the cash to get us number 19, but it's bollocks, I'll take it anyway or how now, save Utd beating us, Citeh & the chavs clawing away at are global prestige year by year, it's hateful.

It doesn't seem right that one family should own two clubs. There is just always going to be an element of wondering whether there is a conflict of interests.

It would get messy, but shall we leave the details to the side for now.
They are multi-gazillion billionaires!

Exactly, keniget's romantic notions will go out the window if they were serious

From The Daily Star -

LIVERPOOL have denied reports that the Abu Dhabi royal family are considering adding to their Premier League portfolio by buying the Anfield club.

Manchester City are owned by one member of the wealthy Al Nahyan dynasty, Sheikh Mansour, but Liverpool insist they have had no contact from the family.

Would be even funnier if they sold Man City and bought Liverpool instead.

Haha. Thats just what I was thinking.

That would be brilliant

You know, that's not such an outrageous suggestion. Their millions haven't set the world alight at Citeh yet, there was talk of them being interested in us before the Citeh deal went through, and we're a FAR bigger "brand".

That would be ridiculous. They've not been there long and the club is clearly progressing rapidly - they were hardly going to win the Premiership in year 1.

And if it's not such an outrageous suggestion, it'd mean that they're the type of owners everyone hoped Abramovich would be and the type of owner Gadaymek proved to be at Portsmouth - not in it for the long haul.

You must work to a different definition of "progressing rapidly" from mine then. Being consistently in the top four would have been a perfectly reasonable target, Hughes didn't achieve it and they're not pulling up trees under Mancini yet either.

As for the kind of owners they might turn out to be, (a) there's no necessary correlation between such a deal and them being fly-by-night owners if it was LFC they always wanted, and (b) even DIC were open about looking to sell the club on after a number of years. Like it or not (and - as with you, I suspect - I don't much), if we want to compete for the big bucks and hence the big trophies, we'll have to run that risk.

Because H and G wouldn't sell. Given Forbes.com's recent valuation of LFC as over £670 million, it's perhaps a little clearer now why the owners have been unwilling to let the club go for the figures quoted in the media.

Jules, you're never right about anything, ever

Cf Tevez, if any proof were needed

Hmm. I was one of those who hoped you'd come back when you absented yourself, so you could be right.

I wish I could be a bit more mature like you Rafa4PM

There's no way you'd ever make a unholy twat of yourself on this website

I'm still in single figures on that score, which is way below this sites average.

It's possible, of course.

But they'd look really stupid and it's not very likely.

If they hadnt bought Citeh, things might have been a lot different tho.

I'm not sure they'd look as stupid as all that, provided success came quickly, but there'd certainly be a risk involved and I quite accept the whole thing isn't likely. All I was saying is that the idea isn't totally out of left field.

This does remind me of the Tevez threads in the summer to be honest. You can (and seemingly do) argue that there is a small chance of most things happening, but when the chances are as minute as they are in this case, I find it bizarre that anyone would go to such lengths to try and present a logical argument to support it happening.

I must do because your definition is insane. The Arabs have been in charge for only two summers and found themselves with a manager who, despite having a decent record in the transfer market, was probably a little out of his depth trying to break into the strongest and most consistent elite group in any league around the world.

When exactly did they have time to consistently finish in the top four, let alone make it a reasonable target? They gave Hughes a chance, binned him off in the second year and are now leading the race for 4th. What's more, in the last few years they have swapped luminaries of the game such as Kiki "Christmas Hamper" Musampa, S** Jihai and Paul Dickov for the likes of Tevez, Adebayor, Robinho and so forth.
