The past two games may prompt Benítez to reappraise his defence in the summer, particularly with uncertainty over the long-term future of Daniel Agger, whose contract expires at the end of next season, and Sami Hyypia, who is understood to be unsure about the possibility of a player-coach role, which has been discussed as the club consider ways to deal with the expected departure of Gary Ablett, the reserve-team coach, at the end of the season in a revamp.

From Oliver Kay in the Times.

Wouldn't mind Ablett leaving to be honest, despite the league win last season the reserves haven't been good.
Sami Hyypia taking over would be great, but it might be difficult to combine a coach/player role.

Please appoint Gary McAllister as reserve team coach with Hyppia in a player/learning the coaching ropes role.

Why is Ablett leaving? Anyone know?

I'd like to know too. Results under him have been very good and all the youngsters seem to be very happy with him. He's apparently really good with the kids that aren't used to being away from home (that didn't sound right 😛).

It was an ordinary first season, a very good second but it has been an awful season this term. Wouldn't mind him going to be honest.

The Reserves manager job detail is supplying players good enough for the first team, not to win games/leagues/cups.

That's true to an extent, but part of their education for Liverpool Football Club is to learn how to win.

The whole youth/reserve system will be changed this summer most likely, especially if kenny comes.

IF Kenny comes, it'd be in a Bobby Charlton like role. Bit of a chairmans spokesman if you like.

Yeah, but if Ablett is leaving, McParland is coming in, and the possible arrival of kenny, i'd suspect that there would at least be healthier numbers, if nothing else is achieved

A rumour I heard a while ago is now resurfacing in tomorrow's rags: John McMahon - Steve's brother - is set to be recruited.

Has anyone been able to determine why he is moving on? He was a Rafa hire wasn't he?

Brian Little settled on his immediate backroom staff last weekend, appointing former Gillingham coach Richard Hill as his number two and redefining the role of youth and reserve team coach John McMahon.

While McMahon will continue to work with the youth and reserve teams Little said "John will also be more involved with us on the first team side because he wants to improve his knowledge of working with older and more senior players."

The ex-Sunderland and Republic of Ireland under-21 international midfielder has now played in all four divisions in England after his Town debut last weekend. And although he prefers to look not too far ahead, the 25-year-old is happy to have made the switch for a month from Leyton Orient, revealing it was Town assistant manager John McMahon, his former youth team coach at Tranmere, who convinced him to head to Shrewsbury.

“This move really came out of the blue,†said Thornton. “I heard about it last Wednesday, spoke to John McMahon on Thursday and he persuaded me to come here for a month.

“No disrespect to League Two but I hadn’t thought about coming into this division, but I know John from my youth team days, he’s a good coach, a good man, so I thought why not, let’s give it a blast and see how it goes. I’ve got nothing to lose, all to gain.

Shrewsbury Town boss Gary Peters has named John McMahon as his new first team coach.

McMahon has been at Tranmere Rovers for eight years and ended last season in charge of the League One club.

"John is a good coach and already has his pro licence which is the highest licence you can get in coaching and that will be good for us," said Peters.

"I've seen him working when I've taken teams to play against Tranmere and I've always been impressed."

Peter Clarke: I’ve worked with a few coaches in my time and I can say that the quality of the coaches at Lilleshall was excellent - Keith Blunt a big influence, a disciplinarian, who kept our feet on floor and he knew the game inside out, whilst Chris Daly, another coach, was fantastic with the younger kids. At the same, John McMahon (Steve’s brother) was coaching at Everton and also had a great deal of influence with me during my early years at the club.

As the World Cup approaches its climax, a number of coaches and managers have spent their time completing the top qualification of their profession and achieving the UEFA Pro Licence at Warwick University. The likes of Bryan Robson, Sam Allardyce and Steve McClaren have achieved the award in the past and this year's intake is filled with experienced and talented young coaches, many of whom have already achieved a great deal in the game.

The 2005 intake was attended by Martin Allen of MK Dons, Kevin Bond of Southampton, Adrian Boothroyd Watford, Steve Clarke, Chelsea, John Collins, Paul Davis, PFA, Nigel Gibbs Watford, Kenny Jackett Swansea City, Martin Ling Leyton Orient, John McMahon Tranmere Rovers, Keith Millen Bristol City, Eddie Niedzwiecki Blackburn Rovers, Chris Ramsey, Martin Scott, Rene Meulensteen Brondby, Dave Penney Doncaster Rovers, Neil Thompson Leeds Utd, Jason Withe, Peter Taylor.

The 2006 intake which will hopefully complete the course this time next year is Tony Adams, Keith Alexander, Warren Barton, Steve Bleasdale, Martin Foyle, Steve Holland, Chris Hutchings, Alex Inglethorpe, Gary Johnson, Kevin Keen, Alan Knill, Kevin MacDonald, Mick McCarthy, Iffy Onuora, Jimmy Phillips, Mark Robson, Glenn Roeder, Leroy Rosenior, Steve Rutter, Terry Westley, Guy Whittingham.

Some decent names doing Pro Licence then.

It was good when i did my Uefa B in Nottingham. I was on the same course as Steve Chettle and Ian Woan. It was an experience playing against Woan in some of the drills after seeing him score some screamers in the premiership years at Forest. It was well worth the 8 days away.

Sounds like the research into the clubs under achievment over the past 20 odd years, at all levels, has been thorough. Hopefully this restructuring also puts an end to the gossiping culture that surrounds the club these days.

It all seems a bit bizarre at present. Poor old Norman Gard has gone as well now. The players' liason officer. He knows enough to write a PROPER 'Anfield Exposed'! I hope they gave him a good enough pay-off to keep him sweet.
