I was reading an interview with Duncan McKenzie earlier, and he reckoned Tommy Smith was "genuinely terrified" during one Merseyside derby when Rioch "threatened to put him into the stand".

Sounds like weapons-grade bullshit to me. Any other views?
 
Blimey. Well, Rioch was a dirty little fecker, but, as he was also risibly vain, a coward at heart. I find that completely implausible. Maybe the bus jumper was trying to wind Tommy up?

Tommy and Rioch only ever faced each other once in a Derby as far as I can recall, the last Derby Smithy played in, away at Pre Peoples Goodison?

Tommy Smith once gave a talk at a corporate hospitality event I attended. He told a story that amused me.

Some time in the early 1970's Liverpool were playing Nottingham Forest who had a speedy Welsh winger called Leighton James.

From the kickoff, Leighton James pissed right past Smithy a couple of times, leaving Tommy standing. Eventually Smith collared Leighton James.

"If you do that once more, I will break your fucking legs!" he hissed.

"Hey, ref!" James called to the referee who was standing nearby. "Did you hear what he said?"

"Yes," replied the referee. "If I were you, I would start cutting into the middle!"
