And goes out with a bang.

He scored as many international goals as Gerd Muller.

13th in All time Premier League Goals scored. (All time =the Sky era obv)

He said it was his boyhood dream to score against Oman in a meaningless friendly in August.

He doesn't get enough respect at times from Ireland fans. 68 goals in a mostly shit international team is an excellent record. He's got some very important ones too. Spain, Germany and Saudi Arabia in the World Cup. Italy in WC qualifiers (via Noel Hunt), Holland in qualifiers, playoff against Iran, playoff against France, two in the playoff against Estonia. Nobody will come anywhere near his Ireland record for a very long time.

I've never understood the hate he gets , particularly from his own lot

No idea why he flopped so badly for us.

Rafa should never bought him, I said from the moment we were linked he would flop.

Never ever a Benitez player.

Shame as under any other manager I think he would have been a hero for us.

Sensational player for Ireland over the years even with some of the off field stories about him.

His record will never be beaten.

Terrific servant for Ireland (Cliche phrase right there), but he's been around so long. Was some talent when he came througn @ 17. I remember being so excited to see a young Irish goalscorer come through. We hadn't had one since Aldo really.

Also isn;t he the last Irish player to play for Liverpool?

Here's two games, I remember

Debut versus Norwich for Wolves (look at the state of him)

one spectacular one for Liverpool

And of course, this one (I was in the stands in Japan and kissed some bloke's ear by accident!)

I didn't think the problem was him, more to do with Rafa's antics. It was a really weird signing and selling.
I'm not sure about that. For some reason he seemed to constantly miscontrol the ball. Again and again he'd try to control it and the ball would run straight underneath his foot and it was really annoying.

In fairness my memory is pretty bad. I can remember the goal against Arsenal and then him being sold. No other memories other than something involving Gareth Barry. Still, think we should have kept Keane around until the end of the season anyway.

Rafa was trying to get out from under that waster Parry at the time and Keane got caught in the crossfire. The signing could still have worked but for that.

Ah... Good old Rick. Is Ayre really much better? Commercially yes, but as the head of transfer negotiations?

Fair question to ask, and I'm no particular Ayre fan, but if he's been involved in our more recent deals I'd have to say yes.
