We were brilliant in 88. Goal of the season was just Liverpool goals. We'd been winning for over a decade, but the football we played in 88 was inspired. The pinnacle of club football.

All Scottish, Irish, English. You could write a book on how that has changed. You think that rag tag of Irish and British players would do ok in a multinational pl.

you think the international nature of the league is to blame or the fact there's feck all Irish/Scots players of quality in the league? or were we never good enough, competition from overseas just confirmed it?

Not in the 88 side no.
Beardsley behind Aldo with Houghton and Barnes out wide.

The fact that the King and Rushy (and Souey) aren't in that side is enough to demonstrate that it can't be our best ever. It might have played our most sparkling football ever, but that's a different matter IMHO.

89 was brilliant, I still think last year we played some of the best football I've ever seen us play, but it wasn't the best "team".

As far as attacking football goes, definitely. In fact I remember thinking at the time that, when we went forward, we were beginning to look like we did in the glory days again. Defending unfortunately was a very different story, but it's a start and a good one.

The 87/88 was the best footballing side I saw win a trophy. Honourable mentions for the 95/96 and last years vintage.

The 78/79 side was just clinical. It could grind out a result anywhere and played flowing football when the game was won.

I was lucky to see a lot of 87/88 vintage play live and it was just unbelievable. We didn't play at home for over a month at the beginning because of a sewer collapse under the Kop. By then, Barnesy was just in full flow, Stevie Nicol bagged a brace against Coventry, a hat trick against Newcastle and the winner in the first game against Arsenal at Highbury. I was at Highbury that day when it was pay on the gate and 54,700 odd people turned up. It was blisteringly hot.

Oh the memories.

87/88 played the most entertaining, thrilling football, with most of the country embracing them. As far as being the best side, if they played 10 games against the 78/79 & 83/84 vintage, they'd come off worse.

The 87/88 team was the most entertaining Liverpool team I've seen and I've watched us since the late 70s. But it was due to an amazing attack really.

I kind of feel like some of the 77-84 teams had more balance and better players in centre midfield who could kill games and bully opponents when required. Comparatively speaking, there was always a certain softness to Dalglish's teams.

Gene is bang on. The 87/88 side was exhilarating but the late 70s and early 80s sides had a menacing steel about them...not as easy on the eye but probably tougher to beat and therefore, ultimately better.

Watching that forest 5 nil clip... Shudda been 8... And if I remember rightly forest were second in the league at the time...

Some of the passing... The weight of pass and the movement.... Fucking sublime.

That's just evil as that was probably the most exciting team we have had, what a team...

The 78 side had it all. I loved watching the later side, but it had its vulnerabilities. The 78 side also had Terry McDermott, a genius who, IMHO, is now one of the most scandalously under-appreciated creative midfielders in history.

On paper that 1988/89 team looks great, and actually it WAS great too, but worth remembering that it wasn't without it's problems. Grobbelaar was out for a while, as was Gillespie, Hansen was injured for virtually the entire season, I don't think Beglin even managed one game, Molby spent a few months in jail.

And we still won the cup and came within a minute or two of winning the league!

...after having been 19 points off the top of the league at one stage. Had we held on and won it, that would have been a feat to rival Istanbul.
