Some superb stuff there - Rush's volley was individual brilliance, Soton's first goal was amazingly good team play, 7 or 8 touches that basically tore us apart. Whelan scored 46 goals in 362 league appearances, and two of them were in this game - a lovely finish one-on-one with the keeper, and then a sharp finish off great work by Rush and Kenny. FWIW, Whelan scored five league goals against Soton in his career, the most goals he put past any opponent. '81/'82 was his second season in the LFC first team, and he scored ten in that season.
