Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has been put on alert after World Cup winner Joan Capdevila hit a contract stalemate with Villarreal.

Left back Capdevila, 32, is a free agent next summer and wants a two-year deal but the Spanish club are reluctant to commit themselves beyond a 12 month contract.

That has left Capdevila's agent Horacio Gaggioli admitting the Spain international could move to the Premier League this summer after Liverpool were sounded out.

Capdevila is very close to Spanish team mate Pepe Reina and Liverpool could yet be a destination if he becomes available on a free transfer. Juventus are also watching developments.

Gaggioli said: "There are offers on the table but we're waiting on Villarreal. He's happy there but he would also like a contract that reflects his work on the field. We will have further talks in the future."

If we were to bring in a 32 years old defender, can I ask if we bring back Hyppia ? He has been the Best Defender in Germany for two years running if I am not mistaken...

Sami is 37 now so no i dont think he will be coming back,

Capdevilla is a quality full back, not exactly bursting with pace anymore and I doubt this will happen due to the NSEV blueprint but if hes free he would be well worth bringing in, hes easily better than our existing left backs but then again who isnt

An experienced player on a free who would walk straight into the first team thats got to be a yes even if only for a short term solution

World Cup winner... wants a two-year deal... would also like a contract that reflects his work on the field.

That'll end up being far from free. With the signing on fee plus having to increase what's on offer in Spain/Italy due to higher tax on a not-so-short term contract if he's insisting on a 2 year deal.

Something's up ... why wouldn't Villareal want to offer him a 2 year deal?

Unless they have someone better lined up.

FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME - the NSEV 'blueprint' - even if it exists - does not just mean signing up and coming young superstars of the making that can be sold at a huge profit. It is about 'value' and as such can equally mean discarded, old players available at reduced cost on shorter contracts.

IS THAT CLEAR?

+1

On a sidenote, he's currently out injured for 2-3 wks and the Spanish press was raving in today/yesterday's report that he's been injury-free for the past 21 mths of football and missed just 5 league games in past 4 seasons for Villarreal. Quite remarkable, that.

Good player. Miles better than Konchesky, anyway. As stopgap solutions go, this would be quite acceptable, assuming he can adjust to the pace of the PL.

You are indeed mistaken.

The best defenders in Germany at the moment are Subotic and Hummels of Dortmund.

No more pace on him, and our defense definitely could use pace, especially with makeshift wingers, the fullbacks gotta help. But again, as has been mentioned before, our current fullbacks aren't exactly.. yeah.

On a side note, get Hyppia back as a coach. Then hopefully he'll somehow be able to teach our defenders anticipation and positioning to compensate for lack of pace, and give us some aerial ability.

I think they've changed their name entirely.

Fenway Sports Group now, or something.

Hes agreed to take on the assistant managers job at Leverkusen when he hangs up his boots which will probably be this season. From what I recall Hodgson made an effort to bring him back here and even offered him a coaching position but Sami said he had made a commitment to Leverkusen and he would stick by it. Much as i would love to have him back in a defensive coaching capacity being offered the assistant manager post is understandably too good to turn down, good luck to him

Clear.

So where does a 32 year old slowing left back looking for a 2 year contract and probably a tidy signing on fee, fit into that strategy.

He's the sort of player that Sam allerdyce loves. He'll end up at a blackburn or a Bolton if he comes to England

I suggested him at the end of last season as a good cheap option, but I'd like to think that we have a bit of money to go for a long-term solution now.

I think I'd rather give jack Robinson a crack at it

Robinson is looking pretty good. Loved his completely cynical hack at Anichibe (sp?) in the mini derby the other night. And that he didn't back down when yer man squared up, despite him being a fucking bull.

Not sure but I think Fenway Sports Group is a subdivision of NESV rather than its new moniker. Maybe responsibility for running LFC has been passed to them within the overall organisation.
