I love it. I said before the Stoke game that I thought it was here for the long haul to make the most out of Suarez/Carroll and Johnson/Kelly.

2010 is the new 1986.

I honestly think it will be whatever best suits stopping our opponents, but with a view to always having attacking options too. It'll be like choosing from the formations list on fifa but with the players all working better together no matter what the formation.

I don't get this. The way I see it it's more 343 or 523 with Meireles and Gerrard both supporting Kuyt

Gerrard was deep for much of the game today and when he was in an advanced position he was very quick to withdraw.

To me, it looks like an asymmetric formation. I'm actually seeing it as 3-3-3-1 when it's laid out, with Maxi/Aurelio on the left of the 2nd rank with no equivalent on the opposite flank. IIRC, Kelly was the one who did all the runs down the right and unlike Johnson, had no fixed player in front of him in these 2 games. I suppose this could be an arrangement to provide cover for Johnson's defensive weaknesses.

Reina
Carra Skrtel Agger
Kelly Lucas Johnson
Gerrard Meireles Maxi
Kuyt

i have been going on about the 352 for ages and never thought I would see it again in the epl, especially in light of the preferred 433, however, it looks great and really frees up stevie G and Ming. What I hope the 3-5-2 can so is allow agger to come out more like a libero (sammer in euro 96), as the 'libero' when does well gives the 3-5-2 a massive comparative advantage over other formations. we are a long way to go from this, but I am loving it.

Kenny is not the new Rafa / Uncle Roy.

I'm loving this formation - it suits the players we have.

Not as deep as Lucas and Maxi. Before Maxi was taken off they swapped roles though.

He was getting stuck in and defending but we clearly have a different perception of what was going on

The formation is actually very flexible anyway, the keys are the pass and move style of play and the defending in numbers

[/quote] I would say that should be 'hunting in packs' and pressing the man in possession - rather than defending in numbers !

I think it's a short-term measure to compensate for the fact that we don't have a decent DM. Essentially it allows Kelly and Magic to attack without leaving us in holes like we were against Blackpool. If we get a Mascher-esque player in the summer, I think and hope that we'll return to playing a back 4.

Yeah, a DM and a winger (or two) should see a return to a back 4. But if we do make 4th by some miracle (or get close), it'll take balls to change things round.

And Robin, you might be right about the subtleties of the system, we do appear to change shape at times during the match. Good to have you back on here.

The strength of pass and move is the players movement and confidence.

Within the chosen formation, we are playing to our strengths and retaining much better possession.

We have decent centre halves and its refreshing to see that our players are versatile enough to change formations during the game yet retain their discipline to keep our shape regardless.
