2nd missing piece of the puzzle - Central defender

I've stated in several other threads that we should get Cahill or Shawcross during the summer but I'm not sure we need another central defender any more.

Was it Hodgsons negative tactics?

Did we just underestimate our defenders?

I don't know.

Yesterday, I was again reminded of how good Agger is. Also, I saw a certain kid on the bench that is currently a Scottish international but hasn't been given a real chance yet, Wilson.

So how should Dalglish handle this?

Do we need another central defender?

we need a seriously dominant defender in the mould of hyypia still. Skrtel is still a potential liability and carra isn't getting any younger. If agger can stay fit then amazing, he's a great cb and should start, but his fitness is always an issue. We need 1 strong cb in the summer and then see how we are

3 clean sheets are great but I think we are still not covered at CB.
Carra is not getting any younger and Kyrgiakos neither.
Agger is good (at times) and young but is injury prone.
Skrtel has been poor for large parts of the last 18 months or so.
Wilson is still to be seen before we can have a verdict. I'd love Kenny to give him a chance, and he probably will if he likes what he sees in trainings.

So bottom line - unless Kenny manages to transform Srktel back to the beast he was in his early days and unless Agger manages to stay fit for longer periods we may probably be needing some strengthening in the CB department in the summer.

OK, I get your point, Carra is getting older and so is Kyrgiakos.

But we do have to sell to buy right?

We can't have 6 senior central defenders in the squad.

Carra
Kyrgiakos (out?)
Agger
Skrtel (out?)
Wilson
New central defender

This. Yesterday's performance shouldn't be of much value when evaluating how good we are defensively. Stoke were poor in attack and we were tactically near perfect so it was fairly easy job for CB's.

Skrtel has been shaky even during this mini revival. He was piss poor against Everton and cost us the win and was probably our worst player against Fulham too. As Fabio said, Carra isn't getting any younger and Agger has a bad injury record so we need to add at least 1 top quality CB in the summer. Mertesacker would be an ideal partner for Agger imo but we'll see what Kenny has in mind.

I think the Greek's contract expires in the summer so it's likely he's gone. Though I wouldn't be averse to giving him a 1 or 2 year extension as he offers us something different with his height and stature and probably isn't on big wages

Unfortunately for Skrtel, if he has not learned to position himself correctly for crosses, or time his jumps correctly, or head the ball effectively, he will now never develop these skills sufficiently to be a first choice top 4 centre back for me. He has been a weak link for some time and has contributed as much individually to our past demise as anyone in the team.
He needs replacing with a proper leader in the back four.

Kelly is a CB or was at least.

The emergency loan window opens next week, we may still get Warnock for LB (is that possible?) Glen can go RB or on the wing and Kelly could go CB.

Theres some options, about CB and a winger, we 'might' already have 2 here right now?

Kelly and Johnson have both been very good as RB and LB respectively, as things stand I don't see the point in repositioning them

Actually when we bid for Micha Richards on transfer deadline day, Kelly for CB looked a cert.

Richards is a RB who can play as CB, whereas Kelly is a CB who can play anywhere along the back line.

Three clean sheets is a good start, and the defence definitely looks more organised and composed. The flailing, amateurish nature of the defence under Hodgson appalled me, and in many games i thought that if the opposition had been a little more daring we could have received some serious beatings.

Still not convinced at all by Skrtel, and Agger's track record for injuries along with Carra's advancing years means we need more than we currently have.

Ideally we need a young Hyypia, though who that might be I have no idea really.

We are looking for a Strong tall, quick CB, who is good at reading the game, and is good at heading the ball.

Thats Kelly all over.

I've never been that convinced we needed a Central Defender that desperately. We have some back-up there, and we need to sell before we get a player in.

Annyhoo, I hope we don't get Cahill or Shawcross. I don't think either of them are that much better than say Skrtel. They are definitely not better than Carra or Agger. If they played for our club, we will be nitpicking flaws in their game. If you put a gun against my head and forced me take one of the two, i'd probably take Shawcross...

That's an interesting view.

I'd love if we could get our hands on Richards, always rated him and we really good use a bit of strength.

We don't need to sell to buy anymore.

G&H are gone and so is our 40Million a year debt.

Suarez was brought in for 22.8 Million to PARTNER Torres not replace him. We was also chasing Adams for 8 Million and Young for around 20 Million.

Did you see the city highlights? He shot out to head a ball away and took out his own player, both had really bad head injuries and Richards was knocked out cold.

That may be, but we need to sell a CB or two to get another in. We have Carra, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos (ok he leaves at the end of the season, but we have him now), Kelly, Agger, Wilson. We can't/shouldn't do a City and stock up on defenders, like they do for strikers. So we have to sell to bring someone in.

I actually think Ayala has the potential to be a very good CB. He is very strong in the air as well.

I think we still need a new CB. I thought so in Rafa's last year and still do now. We need a leader in the defence... particularly when Carra is not in the side.

I wouldn't be surprised to see The Greek moved on in the summer, which will perhaps make way for the likes of Kelly and Wilson. So if we are going to bring in a good player we're probably going to have to sell one of the more established names as well.

Why sell one or more established names?

We don't need to sell to buy anymore, and if the wages are reasonable, they would strengthen our bench (Which deffo needs strengthening)

sell Skrtel, buy Subotic imo

[/quote]

Yup, if we are looking at buying a CB, we would be stupid not to scout Dortmund. They have Hummels and Subotic, and they will be willing to cash in one of them, and they are both miles ahead of Cahill/Shawcross etc..

They are both quite dominant in the air as well.

Didn't Subotic say he wasn't interested in coming to Liverpool, when he was questioned about a rumour linking him with us.

In the summer when he has won the German league things might be very different. There's not many who'd have liked to leave Dortmund in the middle of this season.

It seems like a while ago since I read those comments, maybe as far back as last summer.

Still, once he's won the league there he might be up for a new challenge. Or was it so that he specifically doesn't want to join Liverpool but could go elsewhere?

We've been linked with Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio today, alongside AC Milan and Juventus. Report states that he's contracted with them till 2014.
