Liverpool bid for Sylvain Distin to replace Sami Hyypia

Gary Jacob and James Ducker

Liverpool have offered £2million to Portsmouth for Sylvain Distin in an attempt to replace Sami Hyypia, who has left for Bayer Leverkusen after ten years at the club. The 31-year-old defender has one year left on his contract at Fratton Park, after joining from Manchester City two years ago.

Let the forum meltdown commence.

Perfect choice if we manage it.

Would have 3 or 4 years left in him and is a great defender with loads of experience.

aslong as he isnt 1st 2nd or 3rd choice =] he can be 4th but id rather someone like san jose or kelly be our 4th

might as well sign up sol campbell, as least that will boost up the number of english players. it's just a 4th choice centerback after all.

Terrific signing.

Say we got 2 injuries or suspensions to centre backs, would people be confident enough that kelly or san jose could fill in say in a champions league quarter final? I've not seen that much of them so I really don't know.

I like them both and have always raved about Kelly. It's hard to know how a young player will react to being dropped right in at the deep end but either way it's not ideal. Give them a couple chances in the first half of the season and then reassess things in Jan.

stupid signing if we can't progress one of our kids to this position what's the point of having a youth system?

I've always rated him and that fee's not bad but we don't need to add a fourth choice centre back.
We do.

It's naive to suggest we can rely on kids at this stage and this level, none of them have shown themselves good enough in the reserves and none of them have figured at even cup level for us.

If we get a longterm injury to any of the three, what happens then? Agger's injury record is dire, while Carra is knocking on a bit these days. I'm not a big fan of Distin, but we need someone as cover, so..

That's precisely why our youth system is being overhauled.

anyone who doesn't think its a good idea has a lot of faith in our ability to keep our defenders injury free.

or that...

Or they're wondering are we going to miss out on our main targets by a couple of million if we spend money on a player who won't get near the first team ?
Why change the habit of a lifetime.

If it doesn't eat into our budget for our main targets, he'd be a shrewed buy for the squad.

My main concern with these type of signings is that benitez invariably ends up playing them, and fuckin regularly at that. Zenden springs to mind. Make no mistake, if he comes - he'll play often.

The other concern is that glock once told us distin is slower than hyypia... In that case, distin must be a fuckin glacier.

I've always had a soft spot for Distin.

As has already been said, terrific signing if true.

We could've saved ourselves 8M last summer by giving Insua a chance.

I don't think we need to rush out and buy cover to be honest.

Haha, did he really?

The main thing Distin has / had going for him is that his pace and strength often meant he could recover situations gone wrong.

He did go through a very "pace-oriented" period with regard to certain players, and was typically wrong about every single one of them.

He sure did. He argued it long and hard too.

It was around the same time as his "Franck Quedrue is a better left-back than Ashley Cole" phase. The dopey fucker.

Distin would be a decent signing if the younger players aren't ready yet.

Underlying all this though is the fact that Sami will be f'cking hard to replace.
