Liverpool FC have today announced plans to subsidise tickets by £10 for the away match against Manchester United on Sunday December 14.

The subsidy is part of a Barclays Premier League initiative where each club allocates £200,000 to a fund to be used specifically to improve the away supporters' experience and maintain away attendances.

Liverpool's first-team players have also contributed to the fund, which provides additional support for away fans and has directly helped supplement the discount for this game.

Following consultation with the Liverpool FC Supporters' Committee, it was agreed that the best approach to take to reward travelling fans would be a ticket price reduction.

Bob Humphries, chair of the Supporters' Committee, said: "We are pleased with this reduction and are certain that it will be welcomed by fans, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, which can be an expensive time for many.

"The Supporters' Committee will continue to liaise directly with fans on behalf of the club to determine what they will most benefit from and also to ensure the fund is maximised."

To buy tickets for this game, which is scheduled for a 1.30pm GMT kick-off, please click here to view the selling notice.

Odd choice as it's about 40 mins away and we'll fill our allocation no problem.

I'd guess it's the match where they can benefit the most supporters, it's the one where we have the most fans at, so more get a benefit.

Maybe yeah. Is ticket allocation calculated by a % of stadium capacity? Not sure how many tickets united usually give us.

It's 5% of capacity up to a max of 3000.

I think whatever way they did this, they'd always get it wrong. At least this way, it's for people that are likely to be regular match goers, and it's for as many as possible.

Good initiative and welcome news for cash strapped times especially close to Christmas. Nice to know the players are chipping in.

Gerry has it right, the people who go the Utd game are likely to be ones who have been to the most aways. Its the most difficult game to get a ticket for anyway, I've tried!

Not sure I'm totally convinced of the imperative of subsidising people for doing something both voluntary and directly to the cost of other fans who'd love just a single chance to attend such a match, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

I still think clubs should be allowed to broadcast extra games themselves, provided they use a certain % of the profits to reduce ticket prices.
