Salah signs new 3 year contract

Well… that means a replacement on the right side of attack is no longer a priority for next year - so all resources can be funnelled towards that midfielder - likely Bellingham.

What is this obsession with Bellingham !!!! - is he even 20 years old ? - and we think he is going to be the saviour ? - fucking mad shit that.

Anyway - I hope Salah is effective next season because he looked shit since coming back from AFCON and all that.

If he sees out his contract then could reasonably end up as one of the all time top scorers. Lidell and Hunts records are padded by playing in the old 2nd Division. Another season like last year would put him ahead of Gerrard, Fowler and the King which is incredible given how highly regarded they are among Liverpool fans.

Were you ignoring the talents of the likes of Owen, Fowler, Ronaldo, Messi, etc when they were under 20?

He has a chance to overtake Billy Liddell, which is complete bonkers if you think about it. Don't know if he will, but I think he'll definitely hit 200 and be no. 5 on the all-time charts.

My only wish is that we get to see another title in the next few years.

What an absolute legend. Could have so so easily walked off for a massive pay day and pretty much any club on the planet but chose to stay.
Legend.

Maybe ask Jurgen Klopp.

By all means- suggest someone else.

They were better.
And they were not really midfielders. They all happen to be strikers, with a single objective in the game. Honestly, cannot believe a midfielder can actually be worth 50M plus unless they are above the age of 23/24. The knowledge and experience should count for half of that fee. Its a massive risk to spend the amount being quoted for such a young midfielder.

It looked like we were headed for another big shakeup again next year after Mane leaving this window, so this is great news. Nothing like stability and Mo's numbers are ridiculous.

Its not a crazy deal even if he makes all the add-ons, so nice to see a happy compromise has been reached. I think it weighed on him, as did the African Nations. Hopefully he'll be his old self when relaxed, happy and rested.

The best news is that he obviously believes in the project as he's a selfish winner and must believe his best chances are with us. Hard to argue against that ;)

According to the papers this morning he was ready to move to Chelsea if he didn’t get his deal , I’d believe that with a pinch of salt.

Mohamed Salah’s preference was always to stay put. He has established a close friendship with Ian Rush during his time at the club and the Anfield legend had urged him to sign and preserve his legacy.

Mohamed Salah knew the adoration he receives from the club’s fans wouldn’t have been replicated elsewhere. He also appreciated how working with Jurgen Klopp has taken his game to the next level.

Jurgen Klopp and his staff were also impressed by Mo Salah’s application and attitude throughout the saga, particularly how he has taken younger players such as Harvey Elliott under his wing over the past year.

There’s certainly no sense of envy among the other senior players in the dressing room. Their attitude is that Mohamed Salah deserves every penny.

Mo also knows he benefits from being at this club and in this team, just as we do from having him on our books.

Hopefully with this and the AFCON disappointment behind him he'll have another stormer of a season.

In all seriousness, are football players required to take their earnings as an individual or can they earn their money as a business?
Would make a huge difference, but even as an individual it must be easy to put a whole host of expenses in there to dodge some tax. They’re not just football players, but are ‘influencers’, which means everything they purchase (then post on social media) can be counted as an expense I think.
Anyone know?

Beamrider posted a great breakdown of how that works.

They are employees. Their income should be subject to tax and NI like any other employee.

They have to wear a uniform, have no control on when/where they work and all their facilities are provided for them. No different to a bin man (person).

That’s why they have a salary paid through PAYE.

When it comes to image rights and other income, that’ll be paid via a company. Then profits paid via dividends when the player wants. Which has different tax rules and no NI paid.

10 or so years ago it made a huge difference to operate as a PLC as a contractor and pay yourself a minimised wage (the maximum tax free amount) and take your profits almost exclusively as dividends. You paid Corporation Tax on your profits and dividend tax on your drawdowns. Due to the minimal wage NI was £0 and no employer NI either.

Now it's very different. Even if you can get your contracts rated outside the 'new' IR35 rules the difference between tax regimes isn't massive. If your contract is deemed inside you are actually worse off in some cases!
