Joe Gomez

Glad Gomez is staying. Quick, decent attitude, still young and will keep the others honest.

Phillips was heroic but just not fast enough. Think if we loan him out it'll only be to increase his value with PL exposure.

I’m surprised by that. I wonder if he’s been given some assurances over playing time.

Don’t mind Joe staying, even if I would prefer Nat for the role of 4th. Gomez could definitely fill Matip’s shoes whenever he leaves or is injured - if Gomez is not injured as well.

What I like about Nat is his absolute toughness of character and against certain teams is an absolutely brilliant option - teams without lightning speed, but strength up front, lower level teams in cup games - could provide steady leadership next to you a young one without risking one of our starters, etc.

But, if he goes on loan or is sold, the receiving team will be lucky to gave him and we could certainly extract good value.

Agree 99%. I wouldn't actually prefer Nat for 4th CB as I reckon Gomez has more in his locker - provided, as you say, he can keep clear on injury - but there'd defo be a use for Nat if he were to end up staying.

Same, i don’t any way past Konate but this smells a bit like an exit focused contract. As in we’re offering a better wage to preserve sell on value and Joe has probably got a clause or agreement to go if he doesn’t get enough game time.

Thought the Ramsay signing was the kiss of death for Gomez, but I'm delighted he's staying.

And due to his home grown status, it makes it more likely we can fuck off Chamberlain, too.

I think he's grown as a right back too.

I never rated him as a RB but i thought he did well covering towards the end of the season.

Yes, those few performances at RB near the end of the season swayed me towards wanting Gomez to stay. It showed he is still capable of improving his game and instead of sulking about the lack of playing time he delivered some quality performances in a different position. Having a 4th choice CB who is capable of challenging for 2-3rd choice in his position and can also cover another position if needed is valuable - we won’t be able to do much better on the market, especially with a homegrown player.

Phillips in comparison doesn’t offer the back-up RB option and would require more of a tactical adjustment than Gomez when playing CB. I still like him, but objectively it makes sense to keep Gomez instead if we can afford it and he’s happy to stay.

Triple win - we get a quality 4th defender than can cover both FB positions if needed, is both home grown & club trained and we protect his value if we do decide to sell - because home grown CB’s of his standard and age are rare and cost a fortune.

I’d like to think that he’s re-signing on the basis we’ve stood by and supported him during all his injuries.

Also - given the shit show England have at CB - if he were to get a run of games, he’d find himself back in the England squad in no time - not that that’s a good thing for us, because that’s were he got injured last time.

That may be the long term thinking for Ramsay but probably risky for his first season in the PL and at 18 years old.

I wonder if Gomez is capable of subbing for Fabs. He is much faster than Fabs (generally considered to be the slowest player in the squad), is a good tackler and would be a good header for a DM plus his passing is very decent too. Additionally his CB experience would make him very aware of offside lines. A lot of good DM traits.

Only in dire emergency IMO. He's already had trouble adjusting to one new position (RB), though as others have said he seems to have got the measure of it now. We do need a stand-in for Fabs in case of need but for me the choice would be Hendo, Milner or a new signing.

I thinking the same but for Matip. I've seen him defend much higher up the pitch, and the lad can dribble too, however, I would prefer a proper CM/DM.

Yeah but they are 32 & 36 and we won't need a new 1st team DM for at least another 3-4 seasons so topline DMs won't want to come and compete with Fabs. Also if we say Fabs has a long period out then playing Hendo there leaves us light in midfield and Millie can no longer handle playing DM week in week out for 90 mins.

Maybe a promising young DM in 2-3 seasons knowing he is apprenticing to take over from Fabs within the following 1-2 seasons.

I don't know if Gomez has ever played as a DM but he has the attributes and he's only 25.

Wasn't there one of the kids who played DM in the league cup matches last year & impressed (forgotten his name & cant be bothered looking it up)? In fact I think people on here were calling for him to deputise for Fabinho in certain league games

Tyler Morton I think?

He's tidy enough but pretty lacking in athleticism.

I'm not sure about Gomez at DM. He's not particularly good on the ball, is he? I just can't see it somehow.

I think we should probably sign someone who can at least fill in there tbh. Even if we get Bellingham next year, we're still letting our MF resources dwindle pretty alarmingly.

I'm still hoping he can come good.

If I had said that the locals would have been out in numbers with thier pitchforks
You get a like....🙁

Doesn't have to be as quick as Gomez. Better sense of positioning, and awareness than Gomez

I suggested that Konate maybe able to step in for Fabs and get stick. You suggest Gomez and get none...
So unfair 🙁

Read on and you have had some... Feel less picked on now 😀😀

Not only did I not suggest Gomez to step in for Fabs, I specifically named other players I'd sooner see doing so. Unfortunately you have a habit of posting exactly that kind of nonsense, which is what gets you criticised. You've every right to say what you think. The rest of us have an equal right to call it out.

happy gomez is staying ... stay healthy, and he'll push with konate for matip's spot and give us good coverage for TAA if Ramsay is not ready this year.

First off... It was any attempt at humour... Secondly It was a bit of a dig (Not at you) but rather at those of you who when i suggest something they are up in arms, but if ours say it it's ok... Soooo. Just saying
Someone suggested it did not say it was you, just saying it was suggested
