Jan Transfer Window (rumours, wishes, exists and formation change)

We couldn't sell Ox when he was in contract, he is out of contract in the summer. You'd have to be monumentally stupid to put bids in for Naby or Ox. Mind you saying that, we got an injured MF with a history of being injured constantly to help relieve an injury problem we were having in MF. And as probability would have it, the prick got injured again. That was a fucking stupid move

Sometime we hold out for a larger transfer fee than we should. Would have let him go for £4-5M just to get him off the books

There are other successful/positive examples.

Brighton signed 17 yr old Facundo Buonanotte in Nov ("just finished his first full season of top-flight football in Argentina, with four goals and two assists in 34 games two caps at under-20 level under his belt").

Newcastle snapped up 18 yr old Garang Kuol ("whirlwind six-month rise, during which he has progressed from a fringe youth prospect at the Mariners seeking to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Alou, to the darling of the A-Leagues and a potential World Cup bolter") in Sep from A-League and are reportedly sealing the signing of 19 yr old Maximo Perrone ("only playing 33 games in the top division in Argentina") from Argentina + linked with Andrey Santos ("an established Brazil Under-20 international, has just one season of senior football under his belt") from Santos.

The type/level of talent we should be aiming for shouldn't have issues with permit imo. Unless we go back to the likes of Allan Rodrigues...

Bissouma was signed from a French team and was a full international by the time he was signed - he got his first caps while at Lille.

I’d say Brighton couldn’t have signed him at the time Lille did - he wouldn’t have been given a permit.

Caciedo was already a full international when he signed, but I wonder if there was a reason why he was loaned to a Belgian club initially.

If a young player is considered of a high enough standard or they play regularly for their country then they can get a permit - but it’s certainly not as relaxed as French & Portuguese rules for Africa & S America.
Ah, that's bit clearer. But I think we focus too much of our attention on Europe than widening the sources.

Kuol’s an interesting one - born in Egypt to Sudanese parents and came to Australia as a refugee - again, full international at 18.

Our recruitment of youngsters has been shit. We go for little light weights for under £10m. We could have got Haaland or at least be in the running but as usual we were tight wads, and went for Minamino. People here screaming for us to sign Bellingham, but the club didn't want to take a £20m risk so instead the he went to Dortmund.
I want the club to get MFs in Jan, but it's looking like we will get contract renewals of already ageing players

Could always test it via rubber dingy if not conviced.

The players we sign direct from South America always seem to be unable to get work-permits and get farmed off to Europe.

Has Brexit loosened the requirements? Or were the players not good enough?

The problem is - we’re not really an attractive option - a young kid coming from overseas would be best advised to got to a Brighton or Lille or a Dortmund - because they have a much greater chance of gaining first team experience and developing, rather than sitting on our bench for 88 minutes during league matches, playing in the League Cup, getting loaned out to some godforsaken hellhole club in Cloggers Division 1 or getting written off as useless by some wanker on a Liverpool forum 30 seconds into their debut.

Thats not really true when you look at Klopp and how he gives young players a chance. If you're good enough you'll get your chance. As a young player you could definitely move to Liverpool.

Bollocks mate - you can’t claim he gives youth a chance when we have one of the oldest starting elevens in the Division.

What Klopp does is play the best players at his disposal pretty much all of the time.

There aren’t many 19 year olds that would be at the level needed to hold down a regular starting position - so we tend not to chase after them.

Our big purchases tend to be the 23+ yo.

That’s not a criticism of Klopp either - the same people wanging on about not buying loads of yoofs will be the same people wanging on about how the yoofs aren’t experienced enough to be starting.

See every thread about Neco, Jones. Elliot, etc, etc

Giving youth a chance and having one of the oldest 11 starting eleven are two different things though.
Our starting eleven varies from the 6/7th to 18th regarding who is starting. Milner, Matip, Henderson and Firmino the obvious rotation players increasing it.
The reason we have an old average starting eleven is obviously because we havent done the neccessary refreshing of our midfield these last few years.

Carvalho was bought prior to this season and has already played in 16 games. Elliott has played in 22 games. Ramsay was injured at the start of the season but will feature more in 2023. No doubt. Ben Doak making his debut as a 17 year old in the league cup and then is on the bench for the next league game.
If you are good enough, Klopp will give you a chance. He did the same thing at Dortmund. But as you say not many 18/19/20 year olds are good enough to play in the best sides in the World.
But if you are good enough Klopp will play you. I see no reason why as a top youth prospect you wouldnt want to come to Liverpool and be coached by Klopp.

Oh there’s no doubt yoofs could benefit from Klopp’s coaching and hugs, but they need games.

Carvalho doesn’t start very often. Like I said - the people generally bleating about yoofs are the ones saying Elliot shouldn’t be starting and we need to buy a gazillion new midfielders.

Bellingham has flourished because of game time at Dortmund - he wouldn’t have gotten it at Liverpool, Caicedo wouldn’t get the same game time he’s getting at Brighton, Martinelli wouldn’t have played 29 games for us last season, Saka wouldn’t have had 109 games under his belt at RW, etc, etc

Look at Jones - stagnated ‘cause he can’t get enough game time and we can’t afford to give him game time because he’s not quite good enough.

City seem to have invested in youth to flog them on to balance other player purchases. Arsenal basically fucked themselves for several seasons in order to develop sone cracking yoofs.

We need player, for the most part, that can go straight in and hold down a starting position.

Jones has stagnated cause of his injury issues. Thats the main reason for lack of game time.
Bellingham and Caciedo would both play reguarly for us now, but the former started playing as a 17 year old for Dortmund. Not many youngsters would get into top teams at that age. Worth noting that Caciedo played 10 games in total for Brighton last season.
Martinelli and Saka would have had Mane and Salah infront of them in a starting eleven so thats not to strange that they would have been getting less games.

You’re kind of making my point for me.

Giving yoofs a chance means playing them regularly and sticking with them even if it’s detrimental to performances in the belief that they’ll get better.

Jones has spent plenty of time on the bench while fit.

Caciedo spent half of last season in Belgium.

Haaland was mentioned - there’s no way he gets as much playing time at Liverpool or City as he did at Dortmund if he goes straight to a big club from RBS.

Smart young players know that playing more is better for their development and certain clubs are perfect springboards. Didn’t Jaden Sancho leave the City academy for that very reason?

You'll get one or two that make it through big team academies and there’s circumstances that might be beneficial - like being an understudy in a role were rotation is more likely.

You're dead right. I know Klopp wants us to take more risks in the market but we ain't going to throw these kids in like Brighton or someone else does. From their perspective, I would 100% go to Dortmund rather than us every day of the week because it secures the regular football and the next massive pay day. From our side, we can't carry them and stay competitive.
Look at what City did with Foden, there was a clamour to get him into the team, he was in and out for 2 years before he was a regular, on the verge of leaving. We're playing some kids this year and we're 8th in the League and demanding better players. We all like Harvey and Carvalho but, we're not going to win anything with them anytime soon.

PSV Eindhoven director of football Marcel Brands has revealed he would be open to selling star winger Cody Gakpo to Liverpool this summer, describing them as a 'good partner'.
Gakpo has impressed in both domestic and continental football this term. He has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie appearances, as well as three goals and three assists in the Europa League.
The 23-year-old winger was excellent against Arsenal in Europe, assisting Luuk de Jong in PSV's 2-0 victory at home.
And he has carried his form into the World Cup, netting in each of Netherlands' opening two fixtures. Gakpo has lined up as a striker in Qatar, further proving his versatility across attack.

He almost joined Premier League side Leeds last summer, but the Whites had a bid rejected for the player.
Six months on, rumours surrounding his future continue to swirl.
Cody Gakpo to Liverpool?

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs linked with making a move for the Dutch international, along with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.
But Brands - who was formerly sporting director at fierce rivals Everton - appears to have given the Reds a head start in their pursuit of Gakpo.

Speaking to ESPN NL (quotes via Tribal Football), he said: "Liverpool is a club that is always very focused. Sometimes they get players for the next season in November.
"Would they be a good partner to send Gakpo in the summer? Yes, that's right."

Brands also revealed that Leeds offered a fee totalling €41 million for the winger. However, €11m of add-ons were included, with €6m if the Whites qualified for the Champions League.
He added that PSV wanted €50m for Gakpo, and although Man Utd placed a bid, they did not meet the valuation.
Therefore, if Erik ten Hag or Jurgen Klopp want the player to join their side, either in January or next summer, they know they must pay the required fee to get a deal done.

Liverpool told to sign ‘brilliant’ 19-year-old Bundesliga midfielder if not Bellingham or Musiala

With a cruciate ligament rupture having so far ruled Florian Wirtz out of the 2022/23 season, some may have already forgotten about the 19-year-old’s ludicrous talent amid the performances on offer from the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jamal Musiala domestically and abroad.
Should Liverpool be unable to sign either of the latter two midfielders, however, Ronan Murphy has suggested that the former teenager should be right at the top of their list in terms of Bundesliga-based transfer targets.
“After Bellingham, and excluding Jamal Musiala who it would be impossible to sign, Florian Wirtz is the brightest talent in the Bundesliga,” the journalist told Anfield Index. “He’s been injured and hasn’t featured for Bayer Leverkusen recently, but he has already had a greater impact than Kai Havertz at the club, and would be a brilliant signing for any club.”
It’s hard to disagree with the view when considering the player registered a remarkable 24 goal contributions in 31 games from the middle of the park last term.

A consistent complaint about our midfield is that it’s all (or, rather, mostly) industry and no goals – a feature that Wirtz would surely help change were we to seriously pursue his signature in the near future.
The young German is set to return to full team training in early December (according to the Bundesliga’s official website), which will give us ample time to analyse his performances ahead of the winter window.
With a contract not set to expire until 2027, however, we can safely expect Xabi Alonso’s outfit to slap a mega price-tag on the youngster’s back, as is their right.
Much like Manu Kone, however, as Murphy rightly pointed out: Wirtz’s asking price will likely soar even higher, potentially far beyond our means, if we don’t look to snap him up soon.

Love it when the papers describe a player as a 'former teenager'.
