As the brand new technologies that are available across professional sport continue push back boundaries, recruitment departments in European football are benefiting from ever more sophisticated tools to assist in the process of identifying and monitoring players, both at home and abroad.
These new applications are enabling clubs to become smarter and better informed when objectively evaluating professional players, which as a result is seeing the competition for recruitment becoming arguably more competitive than it has ever been on a global scale.
Along with most other Premier League clubs, Manchester City have spent the past few years building a sophisticated international scouting infrastructure to rival some of the best in Europe, headed up by club's Technical Director Mike Rigg and at the forefront of this is 1st Team Scouting & Recruitment Co-Ordinator Dave Fallows.
Now, having already used the ProScout7 application to manage all their player assessments, scout recommendations and the coordination of its international network, they have made the decision to also implement the Scout7Xeatre.tv video, scouting and analysis application into the department.
City are the fourth English club to incorporate the pioneering state-of-the-art technology during the 2009/10 season, which enables their staff to watch full matches from every game played during the season in the domestic competitions that they have subscribed to, either as an online stream or in the form of a download.
The full 100% uninterrupted coverage, which is accessible both at the training ground and remotely by scouts based overseas, means that the club no longer needs to rely on match footage supplied by external sources, which enables the process to work with far greater efficiency, as Dave Fallows explains.
"The video aspect of scouting has been around for quite a while now, whether it be from the use of DVDs or recording games to satellite systems to build internal knowledge," says Fallows.
"However, anything relating to video was isolated and it was up to staff to chase up other departments to obtain what they needed, or alternatively outsource it.
"Bringing Scout7Xeatre.tv into the club and integrating it into ProScout7 allows us to work with greater efficiency to make good judgements on players within a quicker timeframe."
The integration Fallows refers to enables club staff with the necessary access privileges to watch Scout7Xeatre.tv footage directly from a player's personal record, a club page or an actual teamsheet within the ProScout7 database.
More significantly, it also means that scouts can use video editing facilities within Scout7Xeatre.tv to produce their own series of edited clips on an individual player, either based on a single performance or a combination of matches, before attach it to the player's ProScout7 player record for central archiving.
Scout7Xeatre.tv's capacity for scouts to produce video assessments is also changing the way a scout can work and contribute to the recruitment process. It means that whilst they are at a game in the stadium, they can now note the minutes of key events in the game, in addition to their own subjective comments, for the purposes of fast editing of games in Scout7Xeatre.tv when they are next at their PC.
Fallows is conscious that the role of the scout is constantly changing, and believes that the emergence of Scout7Xeatre.tv is actually empowering them to make a wider contribution to the success of the club's recruitment drives.
"The traditional role of a scout, where they went to a match and kept all the knowledge in their head rarely exists in modern day scouting structures. That change is reflected by the way tools like ProScout7 are used at clubs today," he points out.
"We have a fantastic team of scouts at our club whose expertise goes beyond making player assessments at matches. We ensure they have the best tools to be the most productive they can be.
"Any scout can only be in one place at one time, but by using Scout7Xeatre.tv there is no reason why they cannot further their knowledge on players and teams by accessing material to supplement what they have seen at matches.
"There is no substitute for attending matches live but through video we can supplement the knowledge we have. Our scouts are able to look at players whom they may not have seen prior to going out to watch them in action.
"This is a twenty-four hour operation, seven days a week and we need tools like Scout7Xeatre.tv to react quickly to the situations and pressures we are faced with. This is all geared up to ensure that the right players are recruited by Manchester City and that those hidden gems are identified by us ahead of rival scouting operations."
Having been involved in the industry for over a decade, initially in the field of Performance Analysis at Bolton Wanderers, Fallows acknowledges that not too long ago his Talent Identification role didn't even exist in professional football.
However, he believes that tools such as ProScout7 and Scout7Xeatre.tv will see his role becoming more and more commonplace in the game, both at home and further afield.
"Scouting departments at all clubs have developed significantly over recent years," he explains.
"The more recruitment staff you have, the greater the need to manage that process correctly so that the information collected isn't wasted and is acted upon properly. Our Technical Director Mike Rigg places a huge emphasis on us working efficiently and has put in place a structure that has allowed us to cope with rapid growth in a short period of time.
"My role is primarily to coordinate all aspects of our scouting department, which includes liaising with scouts, fixture planning, managing the constant stream of reports coming in and effectively linking everything together along with my colleague Fergal Harkin. We have a close link with our academy staff and spend a lot of time with the scouting and coaching departments down at Platt Lane.
"Using the Scout7 & Xeatre integration now comes into this mix, which following the completion of developments we requested to improve it, is almost unrecognisable from when it was initially presented to us four or five months ago.
"Personally, I think that there is a good chance there will be a bigger uptake of clubs using it in the coming 12 months, so the key thing for us will be to utilise what is available in the application better than others. Having the best tools available is only the first step - the key one is ensuring that we utilise them better to suit the specific demands of our club.
"I cannot see any reason why, over time, it could not become one of the key tools in a club's recruitment process anywhere."
