European Powerhouses

Insignificance

From what I can see it is still 4 clubs that can win a double of one of the Big Leagues and CL this season. Us, City, Barca and Juve. It is no guarantee that anyone will do it, but being within a shout of that at this stage of the season definately make us one of the European powerhouses. The journey here from the last time we were in similar position has been rough, but the climb towards glory has been steep the last few seasons.

What do people here see as the main factors for us to put ourselves in this position? I know there are many people who has contributed but still it is interesting to see what you guys feel is the real key factors.

I believe keeping Anfield as the stadium and build on that legacy was important for us. It is our home and identity. Klopp has also done a tremendous job and his long term patience and passion for building something solid is also of course important. The backroom staff we have now looks extremelly competent even without the throw-in coach. We also seem to have found a good mixture of administrative leaders who seem to stay out of the limelight and still build a brand that is about football more than commercial (as opposit to both the Mancs, PSG and Real and more like Juve, Bayern, Barca even though I am aware the truth is allways more complex).

I hope the fundations we build now will be so solid that it will be hard for others walk in and disrupt them, like we have seen other places, in the future. But there are never guarantees for this.

Klopp has been the key. He immediately brought in a philosophy in respect of the football, and an infectious positivity that has spread right through every level of the club and fanbase. The purchases of Salah, Mane, Virge and Alisson have given us a spine of genuine world class quality that means that we have more than a chance against any team in Europe. To be fair to FSG they have backed the manager with eye-watering sums if we have identified a player we need.

I don't think there's too much to it really .

We have competent owners who have in turn put in place competent and good people and a great coach.

They have made good decisions and they in turn have lead to an upturn in our fortunes. That's highlighted by the jokes who came before Edwards ,Klopp , FSG and conspired to fuck up a potentially ascending position

You either need boatloads of cash or the above.

Can we be considered a European power house when

We haven’t won a European trophy in 14 years?
We haven’t won a domestic league title in 29 years?
We haven’t won a domestic cup in 7 years?

When we have won exactly 1 trophy (the 2nd tier domestic cup) in 13 years.

When we have managed to finish higher than 4th once in 5 years and only managed to finish 2nd 4 times in 29 years.

We could win the double and we still wouldn’t be a European power house.

Yes we are on an upward trend but we would need to get back to consistently winning titles year after year to be considered a power house.

The other clubs you mentioned do that on a regular basis.

At the moment we are just another nearly club who are doing all the right things to break through though and that is encouraging.

But talk like this is what makes rival fans laugh at us and is exactly why we laugh at Spurs for saying similar about their club.

Let’s win shit consistently before even entertaining this idea.

Yup. We are the best run club in Europe. In any other era, we would have tied up the PL by now and just focused on the champions league. The fact that we are still not sure if we will win any cups this year is an indication of the inequity in football. Rumors that City is closing in on the signings of Saul Niguez and Chilwell. Unless UEFA and FA step up and enforce FFP with some level of strictness, baring a miracle, City is going to win the PL by default in the future.

Yes we can

As a club, we are absolutely a European (and global) power. Have been since the 1970s and always will be, even during low ebbs... The name Liverpool will always be amoung the most renowned and respected names around. Anytime there's talk of a European Super League, we will always be in those discussions, as people everywhere know us and want to watch us.

As a team, we are getting back to the top after (far too lengthy) a spell amoungst the also-rans - I get what Pat's saying, that it's been too long since we've been consistently battling for the top trophies with the likes of Real, Barca, Juve, Bayern, etc... That being said however, this team, as we speak, is, without doubt amoung the top 5-10 teams in Europe this season, and look to be capable of remaining in that company for quite a while, the way things are shaping up at Anfield.

So, I think we're quickly re-establishing ourselves on the pitch to be back up with the biggest of names in terms of team performances, ability, etc... The name, the club has never left that company, but the team has - Now, I think we're back to having both sides of the club be there.

Rubbish. We are well placed to try and get there but have a hell of a long way to go.

Fair and square. But you got my point wrong. If we are such a fucking mess as you say, how come we still one of 4 teams still within a reach of such a nice double?

Why are we good positioned, and not your narrative of why we didn't win. If your only contribution is we are shit, then post other threads. This was another question.

Where did I say we are shit? We are doing extremely well. The foundation for success is there now but that’s all it is. A foundation. We have had no success yet and none for a long time.

Yes we are in with a chance of a double but we are a very long shot for that double.

And even if we get it one or both of the big trophies we’ve been here before in 05 and 01.

We need to sustain to be seen as a powerhouse like the four you mentioned.

We’re not a powerhouse yet we are always part of the conversation when the European super league gets mentioned.

Of course we’re a European powerhouse / one of the top 20 elite clubs. Anyone who says otherwise is either saying it for the sake of argument or very thick.
Our history and current financial standing makes it pretty obvious.

Does anyone remember the days when Dreamie was filled with infectious positivity that bordered on naive insanity - you know, when he could be positive about Roy Hodgson & his style of football.

Remember the days when Dreamie would just ultra-facepalm himself at Will...

Then came the dark days when the mask slipped and his love for Man Utd & Jose came to the fore...

Then of course there was “Cashoutgate”, which inadvertently caused the death of Oncy. (Dantes is still a person of interest in that death)

Now it’s just Wetblanketbeliever....

Or Wankblanketbeliever if you’re Woland..

I remember after Fowler returned Dreamy predicted he'd get dozens of goals the next season and be our top scorer. Happier, simpler times.

He had a superb 6 months then decided staying fat was more important.

Remember when you went on and on about how Keita was going to be amazing and he turned out shite?

Recent times.

Don't get so salty Dreamy. Keita has only just arrived and still can be great. Fowler was never going score thirty goals the season after he came back, which is what you were claiming. Bahaha.

I think this new, er, "improved" Dreamy is much better.

The addition of the (extraordinarily ill-advised) cynicism and stroppy, almost world-weary attitude to the existing, solid Dreamy base of being utterly witless, has been endlessly amusing.

Non-stop quality content!

Still can...? Didn't know you are a yak!

Autocorrected. I prefer Yak to Yank though.
