Sarah Palin now an X-rated punch line after revelation of Glen Rice tryst in Joe McGinniss book
FILIP BONDY

Sarah Palin (r.) could be waving good-bye to status as Tea Party darling after new book says she had tryst with former Knick Glen Rice (l.) while working as TV reporter.

The next time Sarah Palin complains about her treatment by any media member, that reporter might want to inform her that at least he or she is not literally sleeping with sources. Because according to a new book, Palin violated the most basic of journalistic tenets, bedding college basketball star Glen Rice in 1987 when she was a young TV sports reporter for KTUU in Anchorage.

There is plenty of funny and jaw-dropping material in Joe McGinniss' book, "The Rogue," but the one serious, grimace-producing revelation is that Palin had a one-night stand while covering the 20-year-old Michigan player who happened to be in town for a basketball tournament.

According to the Alaskan's acquaintances and neighbors interviewed by McGinniss, Palin, 23, had a "fetish" about black men. Rice reportedly confirmed the affair when asked by the author, though he wasn't commenting on it Wednesday from his home in Coral Gables, Fla.

This is the stuff that drives legitimate women reporters nuts, makes members of AWSM (Association for Women in Sports Media) furious because it tears at credibility and plays to false stereotypes. Palin had learned her ethics the previous fall and spring as a journalism major at the University of Idaho - her fifth college in six years - where future Bulls coach Tim Floyd was coaching.

The allegation about Rice, of course, is just one more swinging strike against Palin, who has become the world's most famous hypocrite/talk-show host/Presidential wannabe in a land of tarnished political souls on both sides of the aisle. Palin was a non-running joke before this material surfaced. She is now an X-rated punch line.

The episode supposedly took place just months before Palin would marry high school sweetheart Todd and long before she would "aw shucks" her way to a vice presidential nomination in 2008.

If the anecdote proves credible with her political base - not exactly known as a free-love constituency - she may be done charming the Tea Party. Enough about Palin, though. For those of us who covered Rice in college and then with the Knicks, this stuff comes out of the Michigan blue and puts yet another spin on the life and career of an enduring headline maker.

Wherever he went, Rice was always in the middle of things, stirring up news. Apparently, he can reach back in time and manage it yet again.

Back in April of 1989, just one season after he reportedly slept with Palin, Rice almost singlehandedly beat P.J. Carlesimo and Seton Hall in the NCAA final. He scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against four defenders that night in Seattle. At the press conference afterward in the Kingdome, Rumeal Robinson told us that Rice's pure, high-arc jumper "was just like falling out of heaven."

"We call it rain," Robinson said. Rice had the prettiest shot anybody had ever seen.

Rice went to the Heat in the pros, where he was part of the budding rivalry with the Knicks. He was a star for Charlotte and a bit of a disappointment for the Lakers, brought there on the recommendation of Shaquille O'Neal. When Rice was benched in the fourth quarter during Game 3 of the NBA Finals, his wife, Cristina Fernandez, ripped coach Phil Jackson. The incident became known in Los Angeles as the Cuban Missus Crisis, a reference to Fernandez's heritage.

Rice was past his prime, a sixth man, by the time he came to the Knicks as part of a four-team deal in September of 2000. Most New York fans never forgot or forgave Rice or the Knicks for that trade, which sent beloved Patrick Ewing to Seattle. Rice lasted only a single season at the Garden, complaining much of the time about his reserve role.

In 2008, Rice was arrested in Miami on suspicion of felony battery after police said he attacked a man he discovered hiding in his estranged wife's closet. No charges were filed, and Cristina ultimately became one of "The Real Housewives of Miami" on the Bravo network.

Like Palin, Rice is a chronic celebrity by nature and circumstance, forever in the news cycle. Unlike Palin, Rice is not touring America by bus in search of a groundswell.

Rice once had something real, a jump shot to die for.
