Premier League clubs are set to vote on a proposal to end the use of VAR in England's top flight ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The technology has endured its critics throughout the current campaign, with high profile mistakes occurring more often than is acceptable.

The most high profile of all came early in the season when a Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur was egregiously ruled out for offside due to miscommunication between the VAR booth and referee Simon Hooper.

Following a season of controversy, Wolves have now formally submitted a motion calling for VAR to be scrapped heading into the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.

Premier League clubs are now set to vote on the motion during the upcoming annual general meeting in June

A statement from Wolves regarding the decision to put forward the resolution on VAR reads: "After careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, (referees body) PGMOL and our fellow competitors.

"There is no blame to be placed – we are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football – and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success.

"However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future.

"Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards."

Finding the right balance

You can decide who to sell who buy and who to promote. The net transfer spend is about £100m. Most of all you can change formation and style.
At the moment the Chemistry isn't there and there is an in balance.

Who had a better season?

Arsenal - 2nd in the League, lost to Bayern in 1/4 of CL, lost to West Ham in FA Cup 4th round, lost to Liverpool in EFL Cup 3rd round.

Liverpool - 3rd in the league, lost to Atalanta in 1/4 of Europa League, lost to Man U in FA 1/4, beat Chelsea to win EFL Cup.

What’s better: 2nd place without trophies or 3rd place with a trophy?

Second best attack in the clubs history!

With the 3 goals away to Villa, this team has become the second highest scoring in our history.

Amazing considering so many lay the blame on our attack for losing the league.

The Ev - how NOT to run a football club

I said I’d do a deep dive on the Ev, so here we go. This is going to focus on the investor I will refer to as Moshiri, but who knows where the money really came from.

I’m not going to touch at length on PSR as that has been discussed elsewhere.

The current state of affairs

The clock is ticking on whether they go for administration. They need to do that this week if they want to avoid a 9-point penalty next season (and bear in mind there is an unresolved PSR issue from their last hearing which could yet hit next year as well).

The debt

Per their last accounts (30/6/23) they owed £341.4m to various lenders, of which £154.7m was due before 30/6/24.

According to recent press reports, they now owe £577m (£192m to 777, £225m to Rights and Media Funding and £160m to MSP Capital / Downing / Bell). This latter amount was due for payment last month but has been deferred (and this is probably the £155m due within 12 months in the accounts, plus interest).

On top of that, and rarely mentioned, is £447.3m due to Moshiri (I am using his name as shorthand for whoever really subbed that money). This is not shown in the accounts as debt as it has no fixed repayment date and Everton twisted their auditor’s arms to present it more favourably. It is, nevertheless, debt. And if they had the money, Moshiri would take a repayment.

In addition to this, Moshiri has invested share capital of £300m (of which £250m was paid for by converting some of his debt) and he supposedly paid Kenwright around £200m for his shares. So he’s on the hook for best part of £1bn. And, newsflash, he’ll be lucky to get much, if any, of that back.

At the time of the takeover, Moshiri’s personal wealth was estimated at $1.3bn. So he’s likely out of cash. And he’s unable to borrow cash from his mate, the sanctioned oligarch, Alisher Usmanov. And, going out on a limb here, I reckon no-one else is queuing up to lend him money.

Alexis Mac Allister is a difficult player to pigeonhole - he has qualities that lend themselves well in a number of midfield roles, but also has limitations that mean you have to be careful to put him in a right place in the right system - he’s not a freak of nature like Gerrard or Yaya Toure who will dominate on his own whatever his teammates are up to.

One of these limitations is ability to cover space - yes, he will do his best to run and challenge runners, but a system where he is patrolling a large area all on his own will lead to stats such as above. There is also a downside to having a playmaker who plays risky passes from the #6 position - it means we’re instantly vulnerable whenever a pass doesn’t work out. I felt sorry for him about the first goal - you can see how crestfallen he was once the pass was intercepted; he knew he let the team down, but at the same time if you forbid him to play those kinds of passes that negates the whole rationale of playing him in a deeper position.

So what is his best role? The team’s main playmaker? An intelligent and versatile midfield partner for another playmaker? A jack-of-all-trades without a defined role? There is clearly so much skill and intelligence and heart in this player, but I’m not sure we saw a full realization of those qualities except for a 1.5 month period in February-March and there could be more and deeper reasons for why that couldn’t be sustained besides tiredness.

Wolves (H) Klopp’s last game in charge

The day has come and it will be Klopp’s last game in charge. Gonna be emotional.
What a man. What a manager.
Anfield will be amazing I reckon.

Final match day thread - a warning

I’ll be deleting any half assed final Klopp match thread.

I think we need to step up and create a thread that lauds Klopp and makes us remember all the good moments.

@King Binny may be the best to give it a go

Yrs, it’s an abuse of power, yes I’m not a real mod but I can 🤓

Blame @LeTallecWiz 😂
