Dear, dear me... How insensitive..

How on earth did this get through design and marketing ?

Who in their right mind thought this would be a good idea?

Maybe it was designed in all innocence (though I think the coincidences are too big a stretch to really believe that), but the idea that it got through approvals without anyone knowing the repercussions is totally unbelievable.

And then there are the twats who will know exactly , and wear it as a result

This is my point I could understand innocence in the design, but how it got through approvals without the alarm bells ringing beggars Belief..

I doubt it's Hillsborough related

Just fucking ugly as sin

It beggars belief that this design was approved. I've no doubt it was an honest mistake, but as has been said, you would have thought someone at Topshop should have been aware of the implications. Evidently not.

This is what's disturbing..

Under the number 96 on the back of the long-sleeved red top, the design includes the words, "What goes around comes back around".
On one sleeve of the £20 top is the word "Karma".
Ms Brookes, whose 26-year-old brother died at the stadium, said the phrases "karma" and "what goes around comes around" were used by some rival fans who claimed Hillsborough was "God's punishment" for the Heysel disaster in which 39 people, mostly Juventus supporters, died at a match against Liverpool.
She also said the red colour, the number 96 and the rose were all symbols she associated with Hillsborough.
She continued.. whatever the shirt's original message, "people will use it now as a way of antagonising Liverpool fans".

It is beggars belief it got through. It probably did have a double meaning ro begin with. But the red with the white 96 sealed it for me that it definitely a reference to hillsborough.

I can more than believe the exec (buying) team had no clue though. Having worked in several companies. They generally don't look at finer details. Just quality, price and source.

It's also to do with an album released by Bob Marley in 96 called "what goes around comes around"

Karma is also what that vibe is.

It's all an absolute massive amount of coincidence I'm sure.

The red choice is a bit off though

There's nothing in the design cover of the Bob Marley album that references the number 96. Or the colours used.

Whoever designed it clearly knew what they were doing.

Some Utd fans doing their typical 'always the victim routine' on twitter

Can you imagine how they would react if the a T-shirt like the following was released?

In reference to France Sinatra 'Come fly with me' released in 1958..

Topman withdraws shirt amid Hillsborough anger

Retailer Topman has withdrawn a shirt after criticism it could be seen referring to the Hillsborough disaster.
The red shirt with a large number 96 is being seen by some Liverpool fans as a reference to the club's kit and number of victims killed in the 1989 disaster.
Louise Brookes, whose brother Andrew died in the tragedy, and MP for Wirral South Alison McGovern are among those calling for it to be removed from sale.
Topman apologised "unreservedly" saying it was based on a Bob Marley track.
The shirt is no longer on sale online or in stores, the shop said.
In a tweet, Labour MP Ms McGovern said the shirt was "very unfortunate".

Some Twitter users had initially said the top referenced the Bob Marley song What Goes Around Comes Around, a remix of which was released in 1996.
Others said Karma was a brand.
The shop said in a statement: "Topman apologises unreservedly for any offence caused by this T-shirt.
"The design was inspired by a Bob Marley track with the number referring to the year of re-release. The garment has been removed from sale online and in stores."
'Weird coincidence'

Ms Brookes said whatever the shirt's original message, "people will use it now as a way of antagonising Liverpool fans".
She added: "Our 96 were decent human beings who did nothing wrong.
"How would people feel if it was their loved ones being mocked?"
Some Twitter users have expressed their "disgust" and called for a boycott.

Of course that was fucking deliberate.

You'd have to be mad to believe the Bob Marley defence.

Some cunt has deliberately done it. Not a fucking shadow of a doubt

I think the person who designed this knew very well what they were doing, but the people who should have stopped this kind of thing happening, product managers etc, were completely oblivious, hence why it got through.

I understand that someone would mock this up on Photoshop and put it all over Twitter, but I doubt someone would risk their career by doing this. I think it really is a mad coincidence. I imagine it got so far through the production stage due to ignorance and incompetence.

That's how I see it.

I can't see the original design being ignorant or incompetent. It's surely malicious.

The process from that point to manufacturing and distribution I can easily believe was ignorance and incompetence, because no company would do that knowingly.

But it really does look like someone designed it knowingly

The fact it's red, the fact it's got a crest, the 96 and the lingo...it's all too bizarre

You couldn't write a parody like this if you tried.

Designers will hide behind the company name. Its not like we are talking about a Versace. Hell. The brand supposedly "Karma" probably outsourced the design to a 3rd party anyway.

That individual if he/she is fired, will move to another company and never have to reference why to a new company. They'll probably just say "A new challenge"

I do subscribe to the buying team there after having no clue though to the reference. But that lowly designer knew.

Apart from anything else it's fucking HIDEOUS.

What kind of blind fucking mong would wear that if the number was 07 on the back.

It's a fucking eyesore and I'm telling you the person who knocked it up did it deliberately.
No fucking way does that get made by mistake.

They should all be fired for making something so fucking rank regardless of the connotation.

On a sidenote, what's with all the robotic voiceover videos on Youtube now? I think they are a real scourge and they seem to be created at a faster pace than "human" videos, so I get fooled all the time into clicking on them. Does anyone (apart from @RedNinja, apparently) find them remotely useful?

This EXACTLY. If it had anything to do with the song or Marley, it would be in rasta colours, not Top Man's closest possible attempt at Liverpool red. And why just red? Usually tops are available in several colours, not just one. This was clearly deliberate, no mistaking it.
