Yep.

Although I don't really like England much now, I kinda admire what Southgate is doing playing so many younger players, we don't have enough quality older players to really make much difference & some of these players could learn from this experience.

Agree, good depth and great young players. They could and should dominant world football like the previous French and Spanish sides have fir 3-4 tournaments

Defenders: Bruno Alves (Rangers), Cedric Soares (Southampton), Jose Fonte (Dalian Yifang), Mario Rui (Napoli), Pepe (Besiktas), Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund), Ricardo Pereira (Porto), Ruben Dias (Benfica)

He’s a wee twat but I think he adds more than Dier. And I’ve watched a lot of Arsenal this season and until he flagged at the end of the season he was their best player every time I saw them. I know these words won’t be popular but I’m feeling hard-hitting and shit after a few beers and watching Rocknrolla.

And I am aware that I'm kinda equating Lallana to Beckham and Gazza which requires a bit of a leap of imagination but in that he would be a creative force in a sqaud that is desperately short (if not devoid) of flair players I think I can just about justify the comparison.

Lallana was one of Englands best players last season...

And we are completely lacking a creative midfielder...

But he has not been fit all season..

and comparing Gazza with Beckham is fucking crazy... Gazza was genuinely brilliant.... total nutcase but brilliant...

He had a good month around Feb, but he barely played the last month, and first half of the season.

He's too Ill disciplined to play deep, and not creative/a goal threat enough to play more advanced.

Diers not great but he is versatile and an actual DM, so could partner Henderson very well.

Also that tweet says it all. Everyone else keeps quiet, or says they're disappointed but will work harder. He just says he should have gone

Id imagine Beckham won far more games and got far more goals and assists and had a much greater impact than Gazza at both club and country level.

Beckham was a terrific footballer, that kind of gets lost in all the ‘brand Beckham’ stuff.
He had a skillset that he worked his bollocks off at, and became vital for club and country.

I wish every player who played for England had half of his heart and passion for the shirt.

Beckham clearly was every bit as talented as gazza, just in different ways

The squad is desperately light on creativity.
I think you can assume Walker and Rose will be tasked with bringing creativity to the forwards, but what does that mean? 3 at the back? If so how do you play sterling in his favoured position and Delle Alli? Those two have to play right?
So either we ask our fullbacks to sit (which wont suit them at all) or we drop one of Alli or sterling or play just one in the CM/DM position.

The first 11 will likely be
Pickford
Rose
Jones
Stones
Walker

Henderson
Dier

Lingard
Alli
Sterling

Kane

Which is about as good as it gets really. I havnt seen any of Lingard but the other 3 have goals aplenty in them.
Full backs do worry me though, because those Centre Backs are wank.

I reckon it's 100% wing backs, with sterling and Alli off kane (more central, not wide)

Pickford

Trippier
Walker
Stones
Jones/Maguire
Rose

Hendo
Dier

Alli
Sterling

Kane

Easy to change that formation mid game too (take off trippier, move walker right back, bring on lingard/young for the wing)

Walker played the last few friendlies at CB and impressed, so I fully expect something similar tried in the first game

He's going to play three at the back, Walker, Stones and either Maguire or Cahill.

The front 3 is good enough to get England quite far in the tournament, but that GK though, awful.
Whats realistic to aim for? Quarter finals? Out on pens?

I think it's more likely the 'wingbacks' will be Sterling and Lingard, with an extra striker to partner Kane. It will be a noble yet foolish attempt to 'go for it' with 'no fear'. Alas they will only succeed in learning about the harsh realities of tournament football for the fifteenth time.

Perhaps if Belgium win their opening two games and decide to rest a few players against England, then a quarter final may yet be possible.

The wing-backs will be Danny Rose and Trippier, playing in front of a back three of Walker, Stones and Cahill (or Maguire).

Ooof. You'd hope not

I mean personally I do hope so, as fuck England.

If that were the case, he has no real replacement for Rose having told Bertrand to get fucked. I think he's going to roll the dice with attacking wingbacks, and that Rose is only there as a backup in case he shits himself and reverts to the old way.

Young

Every position is covered comfortably

There's not great ability in the depth, but there is depth

At the quarters England will get either Germany or Brazil. You'll be able to set your clock by England's exit.

Exactly, Young is more like Lingard whilst Bertrand is more like Rose. So I'm wondering why would you have only 1 player of the style you intend to play, and 2 who are very different? Unless Southgate is just stupid of course.

He'll definitely play three at the back, just cos it's becoming 'fashionable' to do so.

Yeah, although more accurately "just after it's become fashionable to do so", given that City won the title playing variations of 4-3-3 , and Chelsea may have won it with three at the back last season, but have switched that up a bit, and Spurs have played 4-3-3 more than anything else too, I think.

Yeah, but we're seeing loads of teams do it now, even if they're not doing it regularly.
