Will Argentina fail to qualify for the World Cup ?

Ha ha. True enough but anyone who would rather Messi not be a World Cup may as well stop watching the sport. If he's not the GOAT then he's at least right in the mix of the discussion and every fan should want to see him on the biggest international stage.

A World Cup without Holland and Argentina will not be the same and if Ireland fail to get there too it will be all the worse for it.

All three sets of fans are always superb at big events.

What? Who gives a fuck? If teams don't qualify, fuck 'em. I approve the host nations getting a free pass, but the rest? As if.

I couldn't give a tin shit if Messi or whoever does or doesn't play at the World Cup.

Who watches the World Cup anymore these days ?

I'm not sure if this is a joke, but it's the biggest TV audience in the world

A billion people watched the last final, and 20m in the UK alone watched it.

England World Cup games always generate the largest viewing figures for TV in that year, which is why ITV always make a killing

I still look forward to the major international tournaments.

International football is worse than club football these days but still exciting (even if your own team is shit).

Ill watch just about every match i can during the tournaments, its the gazillion friendlies and bloated qualification processes that I cant be bothered with.

Yep. The games themselves are typically dire as a result of the teams not often training with each other and many teams adopting a defensive approach to make up for lack of top talent. That said it's still awesome to be watching match after match for about a month straight. I've never been able to watch my country in World Cup but the excitement remains.

We have to remember international football was the best level you could get.. and then came the Champions League

World Cup is my jam. It's a tournament I give a shit about as a neutral. I enjoy it for the spectacle of it all

Ha ya but you have fuck all interest in any team outside of Liverpool.

I think most football fans the world over, young and old would rather watch one of the greatest players of all time play in the World Cup again.

3 -1 now. Hatrick for Messi. He's closing in on Robbie Keane, surely that would be the pinnacle of his career

How did this happen?

Messi is overrated.

Ha.

What a fucking player he is. Cannot wait to see him at a WC. I would love to see him lift the trophy.

The interesting thing about tournaments is that, as they develop, you can get drawn into a unique little world, and be absorbed by it - and even get emotionally attached to your own country's team. That's what the hacks pretend not to understand when they wail about fans not being interested in ordinary internationals - they've devoted all their time, with Sky etc, in fostering extreme tribalism for the Premier League and its clubs, so it's become almost impossible psychologically for, say, LFC fans to hate Chelski players on a Saturday and then cheer them on for England on the Wednesday, then go back to hating them the following Sunday. It's only in the summer, during a tournament, if your country progresses, that there's the chance you'll gradually suspend your tribal antipathies and start warming to the mix of players. That's surely why the typical Engurland supporter at Wembley during the year is a lower league fan with no axe to grind against any of the players and their clubs. It's not just the fact that England play badly in these endless friendlies and qualifiers; it's also because the Premier League and its ancillary PR people have made this lack of connection the line of least resistance.

Probably doesn't warrant its own thread but lets just spend a few minutes recognizing the crazy Icelanders achievement qualifying to the WC. How about that for a nation with less inhabitants than downtown Liverpool (about 350,000)

As @Portly said elsewhere, their population is about 1/1000th of the one of the US and yet they were the ones progressing from a group containing Croatia, Ukraine and Turkey, whilst the States lost to Trinidad & Tobago. It beggars belief and I think their achievement is perhaps one of the greatest ever in terms of unlikely countries going to the WC.

I had a maths teacher at school who swore blind that Cambridge is not part of E.Anglia, so I take it you agree with him then. :)

Actually East Anglia is not a county, so it cant be thrown up or thrown in to appease DBs request for six counties
