Watford v Liverpool match thread

Have to say I agree with this but usually find that few do, I can never understand how people "personalise" managers and players, I used to post on another site and happened to mention that I couldn't particularly warm to Klopp and that it was irrelevant so long as he brought success, suddenly my credentials as a "fan" were brought into question. Glad to see it seems a bit more grown up on here.

What did the other site think about Lucas?

Klopp's post match was focused on it being a first game, unfamiliarity etc. I'm not sure that really washes, considering we had one new player out there and the majority of the side have played together hundreds of times. He complained about positioning and about everyone being out of position for one of the goals, that's what happens when you play this pressing game and you like your team to interchange and press in zones and numbers. Has he only just realised this or something? We've conceded tonnes of goals exactly the same way.

Statistically we're fucking awful from setpieces, pretty much a 3rd of the goals we concede come from them. Under Klopp:

82 goals, 27 from setpieces, 32.9%.

I think much of it also has to do with intelligence.

Of seven players in our back four and midfield three there are three utter planks in Lovren, Can and Moreno and one kid in AA.

Defending is the easiest thing in football unless you're intelligent and arsed enough.

Quite. And I think this is the key really. Can is ok if we can put someone alongside him with that intelligence. I can live without Lovren and Moreno ever appearing again, I think they're both too error prone and they are well proven now to be incapable of showing assurance and taking responsibility positively.

So it's hard to defend if you're intelligent?

Aye.

The last time I remember us being any good at defending was when we last consistently won stuff.

Yeah, did it come in with Rafa? I don't remember us being too bad under Houllier from setpieces, it seems to be something that reared it's head under Benitez.

Rafa introduced zonal marking but, I think, because he couldn't find a replacement for a declining Henchoz.

I remember it being a big controversy at the time when Rafa introduced it. Was criticized for not understanding the English game.

But, aren't you 'personalising' the manager also by thinking he's a cunt, or whatever dislike it is you feel towards him? If you've made a judgment of his character - whatever that judgment is - you've personalised it.

I take your point to a degree but It was something Imentioned as an aside and I stressed how irrelevant my impression of him was and that the only thing of importance was how good or otherwise he is at his job, which was my whole point. In any event I wouldn't really say that I disliked him as such and I most certainly don't think he's a cunt but even if I did I would consider it to be irrelevant.

I really was only picking up on the point about 'personalising' the whole thing, which you seemed to take issue with. But then (I felt) you were doing the same thing by passing some sort of judgement of Klopp.

I do agree that we don't have to like any of these guys (and it's actually all irrelevant) and I guess it's a bit of bonus if we do. A good proportion of players these days make me genuinely cringe. But I give Liverpool players more leeway; rightly, wrongly or hypocritically. I do like Klopp, though!

Finally saw the second half. Another three goals scored against Watford and we didn't get three points again. So frustrating. Attack looks decent, same old defence. Happy to hear TAA receiving decent reviews.
