The Suarez replacement

I know not everyone agrees, and it isn't going to happen, but I'd take Lukaku any day. He's only going to get better, and he's already unplayable on his day. Heir to Drogba is a phrase that shouldn't be used lightly, but I think he's that.

Agree in principle, but I can't see Chelsea selling him to us, not after Sturridge. They will be wary and make us pay through the roof.

The problem with all of this is there is a lack of class strikers at the minute. There's even, as far as I can tell, a shortage of potential class strikers. It seems whoever we go for will be a bit of a punt. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not correcting any of that.

Jackson Martinez has to be an option. Powerful specialist striker with excellent goal record for Porto and a 33m release clause.

Looks made for the premiership.

....or some Brazilian wonder kid like Douglas Baggio etc

Was going to add Angel Correa but hadn't realised that A.Madrid have signed him for 7.5m (despite a heart condition). He's a cert future star, mainly on the basis that A.Madrid have signed him.

Douglas Baggio is a cracking name.

Marco Reus is one I'd like if at all possible.

Does anyone else think Firmino could be moulded into a CF? We've been linked with him before. Pacey, tricky, eye for goal.

[article=Guardian]The Milan president, Silvio Berlusconi, has revealed he came close to selling Mario Balotelli to an unnamed Premier League club before the World Cup.

The Italy striker has been strongly linked with a return to England this summer, with Arsenal reportedly keen to acquire his services for around €35m (£28m).

The former Manchester City striker scored the winner against England but that was his only goal in three appearances in Brazil, as Italy suffered early elimination from the tournament.

“Other than Italy, I lost during the World Cup,” Berlusconi was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport. “I was about to sell Balotelli to an English team for several millions. But after this World Cup who will buy him any more?”

His daughter Barbara Berlusconi, Milan’s vice-president, last month hinted at the possibility of a Balotelli transfer this summer by saying he is “replaceable”.

Balotelli’s agent has also suggested his client will move away from the San Siro. Mino Raiola claimed the 23-year-old was “sad and desperate” after being widely criticised in the Italian media following his disappointing World Cup.

Balotelli, who still has four years left on his contract with the Rossoneri, has scored 30 goals in 54 matches for Milan since his move from Manchester City in January 2013. Milan are keen to sell Balotelli for financial reasons. They will not compete in Europe next season for the first time in 16 years after finishing a disappointing eighth in Serie A[/article]

[article=Guardian ]Huntelaar, 30, who has only one year left to run on his contract with Schalke, told the German tabloid Bild: “Regarding rumours about Liverpool it’d only be fair to speak to Schalke first. The negotiations with the club have been running for some time.”[/article]

Have to go with Thomas Muller who would go straight into the starting XI or a talent like Muriel/Lukaku who we could develop.

He was talking about us last time he wanted a new contract as well.

I think people here are focusing too much on replacing Suarez the goalscorer. He's much more than that - a real meat and potatoes player if you will. The attack is built around him because he plays so many roles - back-to-goal, facing the goal, pulling defenders out on the wing. It's his work rate, skill, movement and desire to win (rather than just his goals) that makes him so special and so difficult to replace.

We already have someone who can be as good a goalscorer (if not better) in Sturridge. I can't imagine why then we'd want no. 9's like Lukaku and Bony and Martinez to replace him. We need a versatile attacking player who'd take up a large chunk of the work rate volume in the attacking third. Reus, Markovic and Sanchez seem to be much more players of that ilk.

I think Deolofeu is one who might have the potential to be the player we're all talking about.

He'd need a couple of years, though. And would Barca sell?

Part of the concern (at least mine) is whether Sturridge's body and form can hold up. He doesn't look like he's got the hardiest body, and if he goes down, then you're relying on Lambert. Would you be comfortable with Lambert as the lead striker if Sturridge isn't able to play a dozen league games? I don't know much about him so I'm unsure.

Well, we're getting Origi in also apparently. So one way to mitigate against that risk would be to bring in him as opposed to loaning him back. Lambert and Origi as back-up for Sturridge seems a reasonable insurance policy as long as we have a top-class versatile player around who continually maintains our presence in the attacking third - the same way Suarez does, regardless of the presence/absence of a proper no. 9.

Well, then I'm definitely not comfortable if Origi is going to be the third striker. At least Borini is a known entity to me (us) and has settled in England, and he arrived with a 9 in 20 record for Roma. Origi, on the other hand, has 6 goals in 40 games for Lille. Obviously, stats don't tell everything but prior to the World Cup, nobody (or at least nobody whom I can recall) even mentioned him. If we're putting some of our hopes on Lambert and an untried youngster with a not too impressive record, then I'd much rather just rely on Lambert and Borini instead.

If Lambert is deemed capable of reproducing his goals record at Southampton though, then that's less of a concern obviously.

I was thinking that myself, he's not quite there now, but we've seen how good Rodgers is at pushing that extra 10% out of players, & that means we could keep Barca's valuation down to a sane amount.

It's just an added bonus that it'd really, really, REALLY, piss the bitters off.

He's miles away as of yet compared to the likes of Sanchez and Reus etc.

He's not got the natural physical aggression and robustness either.

I'm still hoping for Sanchez...

There's a lot of good names in this thread but I'm not sure any one player can fill the boots of goofy.

Although not really strikers I'd like us to look at Munian / Modric to increase the teams attacking threat. I'm guessing Modric might be available if they sign Kroos.

And I'd like a striker to go along with that. When @doctor_mac mentioned Lukaku my first thought was no but after thinking about it I also think it might work. I read a rumour that some event occurred a while back with Lukaku and that is the reason Chelsea seem determined to sell him, I think they would sell to us at the right price.

Not a chance. Real will sell Khedira instead

We haven't even mentioned James Rodriguez yet, not that i expect he'd come to England any time soon.
