The Reus delusion

Why are so many posters still talking about, and thinking we should/could sign the creme de la creme players from around the globe for big bucks.
Not a day goes by without someone going up the wall, or seriously questioning why we're 'not in for' the following sort of players:

Reus
Di Maria
Cavani
Kheidira
Benzema
Yaya Toure
Sanchez
Rodriquez

All these sort of players are a bare minimum of 30mill, and in the majority, coming from a 'class 1' team, i.e the teams that have a chance of winning their domestic league every year, and the champions league.

Taking off the rose tinted glasses for a minute, why would these sort of players move from a 'class 1' team, to in all reality, a team that is thankful to be in the top 4, very rarely challenges for the league, and hasn't really been in the champions league as of late. And we can't/wont pay the 200-300k a week wages.

It's just not going to happen. The top players aren't going to go 'oooooo, I really fancy leaving Bayern Munich because I've got a chance to play for liverpool who haven't won the league for over 20years and take a pay cut'.

We, thankfully are in the market for players in and around the 20mill bracket, which gives us opportunity to sign some really really good players, from lesser/equal sort of teams, that can do a great job for us. I'm on about the sorts of Lallana's, Lovren's, Bony's, Sturridge's etc.

People banging on about us 'being in for Reus' etc are clearly mental, he's a great player, we're a great club, but we're not at a stage where we can attract these sort of players, nor will we be any time soon. We need to start winning our domestic league on some sort of regular basis and challenging to the later stages of the champions league every year before we can start attracting these sort of players. That or get bought out by oil rich owners that don't care about FFP and start bribing players with 300-400k a week wages.

We might end this summer with Lambert, Lallana, Can, Lovren, Moreno, Origi, Markovic, Bony - which is a marvellous window! A much much stronger first team and squad over all. But some people wont be happy unless we sign a player that we have no chance signing. Just because we've 75mill in the bank, that doesn't mean we can attract 75mill players. If we had 200mill in the bank could we attract messi? I think not.

I'll be over the moon if we signed the 8 players above this summer, it would give us a great chance of staying in the top 4 for the forseeable future playing the style of football we do, and it would most likely replace suarez's goals.

/Rant over

However :
I really fancy leaving Bayern Munich because I've got a chance to play for liverpool who haven't won the league for over 20years and take a pay cut'.
They most certainly wouldn't be taking a pay cut !

I wouldn't mind another player like Markovic, an up and coming attacking talent who could be the next big thing, it doesn't have to be whatever £30m-ish player that Chelsea or whoever are in for.

Look at all the crying last season and in January over the likes of Willian and Salah, is anyone really that fucking arsed that they went to Chelsea?

Money talks, it would seem the club are not really willing to pay big bucks wages for the "established". stars...

Rodriguez is the only one of those who's a genuinely special player. The rest are all stupidly risky wastes of money.

We already have Sterling and Coutinho who are both quality, they're also guaranteed to be better next season. It is definitely deluded to buy a replacement who is in reality not as good as either of them, shuffle the team around to fit him in, and then hold your hands up and bitch when he inexplicably doesn't play as well for a different team in a new country.

Yaya, Cavani, and Rodriguez aren't realistic targets. Khedira, Di Maria, and Sanchez have seemingly already moved, or have something in the works.

I think the rest are all attainable in the 30-45M range.

Just out of interest, seeing as a few German based players' names are cropping up, does anyone here have a handle on wages in the Bundesliga?

We often hear about how well that league is run etc. but do they have the same attitude to wages in general terms? I realise that at the top end you've likely got Bayern Munich throwing dosh at you but what is it like in the tier below that? Are the top players at Dortmund et al likely to be on the same or similar wages to say Gerrard or Suarez (pre-move obviously)?

I guess what I'm getting at, again purely out of interest, is whether or not wages is a big stumbling block or if, in reality, Liverpool could match or better the wages of a Reus or Draxler well within the current pay structure.

Not sure how accurate we can get their wages, but here's a site reporting the clubs overall wages expenditure:

I do agree with the sentiment of the thread by the way, the top tier of players are beyond us. Our ceiling right now is the £20-30m players and given the competition at the top end of that; £30m could even be a step too far.

Thanks for taking the time to find that Mors.

So using a bit of Google Fu: http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2014/may/01/premier-league-club-accounts-debt-wages

It would appear that Tottenham (again famed in recent years for wage structure) are paying around the same as Bayern Munich. In fact there are five teams in the Premier League, Liverpool included, with significantly higher wage bills than Bayern Munich.

Arsenal signing Sanchez, Ozil and maybe Khedira shows that you don't have to win your league or have a realistic chance of winning it every season (or even any silverware at all) - What it does show is that consistent champions league football and big wages can sway it, also having a star name arrive for big money (i.e. Ozil) can further influence players like Sanchez, who cited the latter when stating his reasons to join. We can't look past the fact that London probably helps them too.

Getting CL again next season, and someone like Markovic developing into a world star overnight, or us splashing money on a big name this season will probably help a lot going forward as automatic marketing to that upper echelon calibre of player.

And the attraction of an iconic capital City, unfortunately.

Someone needs to change Liverpool's Wikipedia page to make the city seem bigger than what it is. Maybe fake some top notch nightclubs websites and what not. Perhaps create some great reviews for nonexistent south American restaurants too.

SCM in a nutshell;

20M for Bony? Fuck that, I've seen him score 25 goals in a season. 25M for Markovic? Never seen him play in my entire life, but this youtube video's great, so I'm all for it.

Most footy fans in general. I've seen loads who are completely underwhelmed by Lallana who I reckon will be a sound player for us. If we'd signed him from a Spanish team the same people would be probably be cockahoop

Spending over 25M on a "sound player" is the issue with that transfer for me. You're paying elite money for a player who will likely be more of a cog for us than a difference maker.

I'm pretty certain we're just terrible negotiators though, we should've wrapped that deal up in March for 15M or so if we had any sense.

I think he'll be much more than a cog and more of a difference maker and will certainly surprise a few. We'll see before long I'm sure

Liverpool look to capitalise on Marco Reus' Barcelona and Man Utd disappointment
LIVERPOOL could be set to rescue Marco Reus from his Barcelona and Manchester United disappointment by offering him a move to Merseyside this summer.

Marco Reus is being looked at by Liverpool[GETTY]

Reus was left aggravated by Luis Suarez's move to Barcelona last week because he believed he was en route to the Spanish giants.

But new boss Luis Enrique is thought to have preferred Suarez to the German international, leaving Reus in the lurch.

The 25-year-old had already spurned interest from United because he favoured a move to Barca.

But it seems that Liverpool are ready to offer the dazzling forward a way out of Borussia Dortmund.

Marco Reus thought he was joining Barcelona

Reports suggest that Brendan Rodgers could launch a £44m bid for Reus that Dortmund will find difficult to resist.

The Reds desire to add more attacking firepower after losing Suarez is well-known having asked for Alexis Sanchez as part of the deal with Barcelona.

But after seeing Sanchez choose Arsenal instead, Liverpool have wasted no time in looking at alternatives.

The Reds appear close to finalising a move for Serbian youngster Lazar Markovic but have today also been linked with Arda Turan, Wilfried Bony and Romelu Lukaku.

Just for you Mors ;-)
