TAA v Clyne

With Clyne back to full fitness is he likely to be first choice right back. TAA obviously did well there last season, but from his career through the youth system was not at right back.

Will he therefore be utilised in different position this year. I seem to recall a few games at the end of the season he played in midfield when Clyne also played.

I'd rather have TAA at RB than Clyne. His positioning, attacking instincts and connection with our team last season was instrumental to our play.

When we bought Clyne he was the best RB in the Prem. If that player's back, or we have a realistic shot at getting him back soon, that's something I wouldn't turn down lightly. That said, it would be majorly hard luck on TAA to lose his place. Glad I don't have to make the final choice. Nice problem to have though.

If we are not buying Fekir.. I half expect TAA to be utilised elsewhere

Right back is just not his natural position. Albeit he will likely be first choice..

Clyne is a steady eddy Steve Finnan type right back.. Can't be sniffed at

Clyne is a solid defender but awful going forwards, the difference TAA made in this regard was massive, I don't want to lose that.

I'd rather have a defensively tight back line with Clyne, but they'll probably be rotated depending on the opposition.

He also got exploited a few times becauss he was poor positionally and didnt read the game well. Clyne is the better fullback if hes fully fit. Wing back would be a different matter.

Clyne was far better going forward when he first arrived - both for Palace and for Southampton his attacking play was a big part of his value to the side. I maintain that that part of his game went haywire when Rodgers' regime was crumbling and he tried the double desperation tactics of (a) buying Benteke and (b) telling the back four not to cross the halfway line. If Klopp and his coaches can repair that damage it would be well worth doing.

TAA is the best prospect we've had since Gerrard. I don't think people fully appreciate what a sensational talent he is.

He legitimately offers playmaking from the full back position. How many teams in the world can boast of that?

His passing ability from that position is magnificent. If he continues his growth and matures physically, he has the potential to genuinely be one of the best FBs in the world. He really is that talented.

I quite liked Clyne as a player, but TAA offers an amazing new dimension to our side. There's no player in our squad I'm more excited to see develop.

Clearly Clyne will start the season as RB, then it will be up to Trent to displace him, which may be a challenge if Clyne is playing top of his game

But Trippier is better?
I think you're like 2-3 years ahead of schedule.

Clyne is a better defender at the moment.
I would definitely start with him if im being honest.
Trent will play plenty of games though. Klopp loves rotating full backs.
I dont think our back four was the same for about the first 20 games of last season

The motherfucker was playing Moreno.

Sell a youngster who's looked really good in a few games, and not so good in others? Nah, keep Gomez

I've seen him play right back a few times and not been impressed. There is always an error in him, especially with the cross field pass where he is caught out of position / misjudges the flight of the ball. This cost us points last season. Given we have taa, we seem well covered at rb and I wouldn't trust him at CB just yet.

Id rather sell Klavan and promote Gomez to 4th choice CB to start blooding him in his true position. Klavan is 33 and a limited journeyman type player, Gomez may not turn out to be any better but at this point hes got a significantly higher level of petential, hes never going to realise without games. In 2 years he could be a great defender , or we could be selling him to Villa.

There is no point in selling Klavan. If he is happy as a backup then we should keep him. Afterall we were down to our last CB at one point late last season.

And there were times (before van Dijk arrived) when he looked our most reliable CB anyway.

That said, I wouldn't be giving up on Gomez yet awhile. For sure he still has work to do, but at his best he's a fine player now and he should improve further. If we go as far as we want to go in all competitions there'll be plenty for him (and Klavan) to do in the coming season.

It's worrying how often he misjudged the flights of the long balls while playing at right back. Not an ideal weakness for an aspiring CB.

I watch Spurs twice a season (when they play us), and pretty much never watch England play. So I have no idea how good Trippier is.

I wouldn't generally put much stock in a 19 year old kid not being his national side's first choice RB.

It's obvious to everyone that he has a long way to go. My post was about his potential and talent.

TAA

If two players are even realistically comparable then I’d always go with the younger one with the best likelihood of growth.

I see where you're coming from, but Gomez wasn't a fullback when he joined us and has pretty much had to learn the position from scratch as a young player while getting used to the Prem, which would be a baptism of fire for anybody, so IMHO the comparison only takes us so far. I'm not saying he doesn't have questions to answer, but I'm more optimistic than you that he can do so given the right opportunities.
