Salah, the man for the big/all occasions

It's a close one but I'd still go with Suarez. You can be sure some big figures will come flying in this summer. People are talking about the Ballon D'Or for fucks sake! In my opinion I think for sure he'll stay though. He clearly loves it here. What a fucking player and at 37mill - a complete bargain.

Roma's asking price for Alisson keeps going up with each performance like this... :) They must be mad at themselves beyond belief for letting a player like this leave.

We basically replaced Sterling with Mo, with twice the output and enough change to buy the best left back in the league.

He has outperformed every striker in our history this season. And he isn't a centre forward.
Thats a bit disingenuous, no? Rush scored 47 in one season. Salah has scored more than any other striker in their debut season for us, which is some achievement admittedly.

Yeah, I meant debut season. Not being disingenuous at all. And as I say, in the context of him not being a CF, his season has been extraordinary.

And also, Suarez didnt for us

All well and good when you're flanked by Messi and neymar, with iniesta pulling the strings

Bit different for mo like

I don’t think the “and he’s not even a CF” thing counts as much these days.

Ronaldo and Messi don’t usually play the typical CF role either.

He’s a forward.

I get your point, but the 2 players you're mentioning are candidates for GOAT

Surely that shows how ridiculously impressive it is?

For sure. If he keeps this up for another couple seasons he's in the top tier.

His ability to get past players seems superior to Suarez, he doesn't rely upon random deflections and predictable taught skills. It's more like he has the mind of a physicist, keeping the ball jittering around his feet randomly, taking continuous measurements of the space around him, waiting until there is a sufficient opening for him to punch through, and then he goes.

Shay Given last night on MOTD starting with the, "will Liverpool keep hold of him in the Summer?" narrative.

It's gonna be tough and I reckon we'll get tested by someone this Summer over him.

I think he'll stay.

Real Madrid is the only club that would be an option for him.

I can't see him leaving in the summer but I guess the question is what needs to happen in order for us not to be prey for Real Madrid and Barcelona? Pay higher wages? Consistently in the top four? Consistently in the knock out phase of the European Cup? Or do we need to be Man City, essentially?

Yeah, we need to win stuff. I don't think repeated qualification for Europe is enough for the top top players. They want medals.

Jesus, you're using as examples two of the greatest players in the history of the game. What he is doing from a wide forward position is extraordinary, just as is the case with these two. It's a pretty short list of wide players who score at this kind of rate.

I think he means the role has changed, which it has really. There's alot more emphasis in the modern game over 433 and variations of it. When you had a winger traditionally, he was a wide midfielder who would hug the line, whip in crosses and chip in with goals and assists. I don't think we generally play like that any more, the fullbacks do the wide midfield role and take up positions flanking the midfield. Our so called wide players push high up field, interchanging and often playing on the shoulder of the defender. Alot of the time it's like playing with a front two, Firmino provides the link between midfield and attack and often Mane and Salah push ahead of him and will come inside into more orthodox "forward" positions.

I don't think it's cut and dried to say we've got so many goals from a winger, that would be true if he was a player who supported the attack, he does most of his best work and gets most of his goals from inside the box. That's not to say he doesn't do good stuff deeper down the pitch, but he does the bulk of his best work in typical traditional striker positions.

Mane is doing almost exactly the same job on the left hand side. If you look at the heat maps for both players you'll see that they mirror each other with each of them doing the vast majority of their work on the touchline. Despite Mane being an excellent player, he doesn't pose anywhere near Salah's goal threat. Hazard is another exceptional player who can be thought of as a wide forward. In his best ever season he scored 19 in all comps. Compare also the likes of Willian who has scored 13 goals in this, his highest scoring season. Salah is doing something exceptional in his role.

Even in city's brilliant attack and brilliant wide players...at the moment they're not coming close to his numbers
