With immediate effect. More to follow.

Didn't see that one coming, I thought Lewis would be the one to leave.

Leave the team, maybe. He wouldn't leave the sport

This is very strange. Everyone knows, including him, that Hamilton is a better driver, but whatever

He's said that he knew that race would be his last when he woke up on Sunday.

Going out at the top and walking away from working with that gobshite cry baby Hamilton.

Yeah quitting whilst at the top, although it feels cheap as i cant imagine him getting the better of Hamilton again and you must imagine he knows that and feels that way.

Yep, that's how most analysts are reading it, as a slap in the face to Hamilton, that although he's the better driver, he won't be able to prove it on the track against him next season.

I meant Hamilton leaving the team for Ferrari, it'd be interesting to see Vettel and Hamilton against each other in the same set up (of course there's a slim chance that may happen yet at Merc, can't see it though).

I read it as - if he didn't have a contract he'd leave.

I'm guessing he'll be back

So he's seen the light that this season was a fluke due to Lewis's car breaking down all the time. Fair play, seeya.

It is a little weird given how driven (excuse the pun) most of the drivers are so keen to go on as long as possible. (the slight tinge of sadness around Button and Massa's retirements for example and Alonso keeping on going). I wonder if his heart was ever really in it and it was just because of his dad. And that whole thing about his dad not going to the race and then turning up after seemed odd to me too.

I also have a random theory about Hamilton which is that all the speculation about his sexuality is true and it's that what drives him to want to succeed rather than it being about the racing. I think that might be why he gets so petulant when things aren't going his way. I wanted Rosberg to win it as Hamilton just gets on my tits with his behaviour and the constant messages of "it's all about the fans"/"i love Ayrton" (??). Hope Mercedes get someone in who can challenge him - Alonso maybe.

Alonso may not go there. He left mclaren because of how focused they were towards Hamilton. Whilst Mercedes say they don't have a number one driver he'd have seen Hamilton's complete disregard of team orders and think fuck could I be arsed with that.

I think Rosberg was overly cautious in the last three races and he was more than happy to accept second place and never even intended to challenge Hamilton.

That was very clear indication that he did not have the stomach for racing anymore.....not surprised he chose to retire.

But people acting as if it's all down to reliability forget that he had the worse of it when Hamilton won his second career wdc...he had problem after problem during the title run in. In general Hamilton was the quicker but not by as much as some of his fans and even himself would have liked.
