No CL = no big signings?

I still think we'll get 4th - we need help, starting with City on Thursday but I think the schedule still plays in our favor and hopefully, we'll be healthy enough to do the necessary to clinch 4th.

However, assuming we don't - does lack of CL footy mean we won't be able to sign top players?
Why are people so convinced top players won't come here if we don't have CL?
Did Zlatan and Pogba go to Manure?
The name, coach and $$$ should be enough no?

The name/coach last season saw us bring in a player from Southampton, a midfielder from relegated Newcastle and a free transfer from Germany. So I'd say it's fairly significant. I think Klopp can attract big names, but those big names might want CL football, so it's the complete package that will be the key.

If Manure can pull Pogba and Zlatan with only the Europa League to offer, we should be able to pull most of the targets we're going after (The Keitas, Tahs etc)

But despite being out the CL, United were seen as still a force, they've won loads over the last two decades and had just took on one of the best, trophy rich managers in World Football. Plus they have bucket loads of money to pay for players like that and their wages, we're not on the same level in that sense. Our manager has won stuff but to a differing degree, we have had an indifferent several years and our best players constantly leave us because we fail to maintain progress. There's a big difference between us and them, despite their relative lull over the last few years.

CL footy will cost us almost all the best players we aspire to signing.

The ones who prefer to sign simply for cash won't be on Klopp's wishlist imo, as I'm fairly certain he won't play mercenary type players, rightly or wrongly.

Most people who follow English footy understand that Manure are now as much a 'force' as we are ... It's why Pogba, if memory serves me well, mentioned about taking Manure 'back to where they belong' ...

I don't think most of our targets will be ones who the CL bound clubs want ... So the key real issue here will be $$$ ...

Klopp builds a club he wants fighting for titles with his mindset. He has things he believe strongly in. Players coming looking for a fat paycheck and a freeride to glory will not fit in.

That doesn't really ring true, when you factor that many of our current players only turn up when it suits them.

I think there is a possibilty of getting some of the players but not all of them.
Keita will surley be impossible to get without CL football, while I think the likes of Brandt could happen regardless.

Based on how he speaks, I actually think we do have a chance with Keita (unless Bayern offer him guaranteed games obviously!)

Yeah, maybe. He also has the same agent as Mané.

Does that ever make a real difference ('same agents')?

On Keita though - he obviously wants to end up with one of the big clubs in Spain, and he knows he has to develop to get to that level ... He won't go to a team where he cannot play regularly or where the level isn't high enough league wise. If he moves this year, it will be to Bayern or a top tier team in England/Spain/Italy.

We will never pay big wages under fsg so the hope was getting into the champions league could help bridge the gap.

Suarez was on 200k a week so thats not true. For the right players they obviously will.

We've struggled for a few seasons now to convince top targets to come to Liverpool and it's clear that one step towards changing that is getting regular CL football.

I think it's just absurd to start / continue pretending that we are up there with our competitors in our ability to attract players. We are clearly not.

I'm sure Klopp has some pull but we've seen last summer that it isn't always enough.

Wasn't that salary on for a few months just before he left?

Yes, obviously. That £200,000 salary was what he was earning after signing his last "long-term contract" which secured him as our player until 2018.

It's been loudly stated and often repeated that FSG's wage policy is about rewarding players for what they do at Liverpool, not what they did before.

Which is laudable and all that, but if a player is offered £100,000 by us, with the promise of bonus-based incentives and a yearly review, and £200,000 by someone else straight away, it doesn't take a fucking genius to work out which offer they will accept.

This is all common knowledge. i'm surprised Hansern doesn't seem aware of it.

I'm aware of that policy but I dont know about every contract proposal or contract to any Liverpool players, so why comment. All I know is that we had several players earning over 100k per week, with the best more than that, twice aswell.
So, Lets not kid ourselves. We might not pay top top wages but we pay more then enough to be competitive. Our problem was signing average players and giving them big expencive contracts.

Yes, but the problem with FSG identifying this very obvious problem is that it's all very well saying we won't sign "average players" but it's a lot more difficult actually NOT signing average players. And when you identify good players, the issue there is that they very often do expect quite "big, expensive contracts".

Because they're good players and lots of teams want to sign them.

It's pretty flawed whichever way you look at it, strategy-wise.

It is flawed. And it is a tricky strategy. Cause it takes a wee bit of time to get it right... And correcting old mistakes is part of the process.

I think we need to remember that Klopp was giving everyone a chance this season. Some, such as Lallana and Firmino have made progress. Others, sad to say, have not with some alarmingly going backwards or reverting to their means. Looking at that back 5 yesterday, Klopp's only acquisition was Matip. The rest were already here. Heck, of the entire starting 11, only Matip was not already here. Some will not be next season, at least as as starters. Better that way, I think, than get players for the sake of it.

Still, I'm rather worried about the constant salivating over van Dijk and a huge fee for another Southampton player. Is he actually an upgrade in quality over Sakho?

Yeah, because two of his acquisitions, Karius and Klavan, are so shit they can't even get into that defence.

Those were safe acquisitions. Only Karius was meant to be a challenger and was hastily dropped when he failed immediately to make the cut.

Van Dijk is in many ways an upgrade on Sakho and a very different type of defender too. One who can actually also look good when not just asked to defend deep for a team that is defending more than anything else (Palace).

My main problem with Sakho was his erratic and often misplaced passes and position whenever we were on the attack or had to turn the play around. His game intelligence wasn't up to speed when asked to play in a team with the lions share of possession whereas I don't think that will be a problem at all for the 'clever', much calmer and more skilled defender overall in Van Dijk. I have seen Soton a fair share this season and to me he looks even better than Matip really. Less error-prone, more commanding.

Fair point. I haven't seen many Southampton matches so was going on past history.
