This was a bit of a reality check for our midfield. And if Im honest its made me a little concerned for next season. Can was easily our best midfielder as he has been on his fair share of games this season. Milner looked very leggy after playing midweek and Ox was completely nullified by their low press.

Fast forward to next season and it currently looks like Keita in, Can out. But that would make us even more unbalanced with Keita a more offensive type player than Can, like an upgraded Wjinaldum. Add to that neither Milner or Henderson looks able to play 2 games in a week anymore and we look quite thin in the middle. Are we counting on Gruijic to step up next season or do we need to go out and buy a replacement for Can this summer?

Yep, I think it's clear at this point that Can has the highest ceiling of all our midfielders, by far (well, maybe excluding Trent, who is not a midfielder yet), his issue is consistency, but lately he's been good most of the time. And if you try to imagine a perfect partner for someone like Keita, I have to say it's hard to do much better than Can – none of the midfielders we've been linked to as potential Can replacements tick all the boxes in terms of physicality (Jorginho, Lewis Cook), ability to play as the deepest midfielder (Milinkovic-Savic and Lemina), attacking contribution (Ndidi, Wanyama) and so on. Losing him will be a blow; however I'm still hanging on to some hope, in part based on the U-turn of his compatriot Ozil, who also seemed to run down his contract on purpose, but ended up staying at Arsenal.
