Is boxing becoming a bit of a joke?

It's becoming much of a cash grab now and about 'big fights'. But people love watching a freak show, so these sort of fights will do reasonably well. There's a massive fight this year with 2 of the best boxers possibly of this generation, great fighters. But it'll probably do less ppv's than mayweather or anthony joshua, both in stupid fights.

Yeah, with the alvarez ggg fight being just two weeks after the mayweather mcgregor fight I bet it gets hardly any coverage in comparison.

Becoming? I think it jumped the shark a while ago.

Maweather and Paquio fighting 20 years too late, Mayweather-Mcgreggor, Paquio fighting some ham and egger in Australia who is the number one contender at 16-0.

Boxing needs star power in the heavyweight division to become interesting again.

Heard rumours about some tag team boxing. It's also a rematch of a fight from about 25 years ago, Hughes/Wards vs Athens/Bradley.

I'm not sure if I would want to go in for that rematch.

What's a ham and egger?

The sport would benefit from a reduction in sanctioning bodies. A lineal champion in each weight class would do boxing the world of good.

At the moment, we have three world heavyweight champions holding four belts between them - ridiculous! Then you have boxers like Eubank Jr holding onto muck like the IBO super-middleweight title and claiming to be a world champion (in a division with no less than four other 'world champions'! WBA Regular and Super champion - Really??) This goes on in every weight class (of which - again - there are too many!)

The alphabet belts made the sport a bit of a joke long before the current run of match-ups - I mean, before Mayweather v McGregor we had Ali v Inoki (and Balboa v Thunder Lips!) And while we are on McGregor; the UFC certainly have it right with one champion per weight class.

AJ is doing what he can for heavyweight boxing in this country, he's the only boxer we have with real star potential. But outside of him, the only other boxer whose career I'm interested in right now is Vasyl Lomachenko. That guy brings something different with a tremendous work rate, outstanding movement and a desire to keep stepping up.

If they won't do away with all the sanctioning bodies, then it has to be intriguing match-ups that keep the sport going. If I had a say in it, I'd be looking to put together something like the Super Six again.

Lomachenko is truly a brilliant talent. Except where's the competition to really bring out the best in him?

Gervonta Davis perhaps? But dickhead Floyd will keep his boxer away from Lomachenko as long as possible.

The roadblocks for Lomachenko - as in GGG's case for a while - will be whether the top fights can be made in his weight class. If they can't, then it's all about how quickly he's willing to step up in weight. Garcia and Linares at 135lbs would be interesting fights, but it does look like Garcia has an eye on 140lbs.

Rigondeaux seems willing to fight him at 130lbs, but I think that's a bad fight for Rigondeaux if Lomachenko takes it.

For those who haven't had the pleasure of watching Lomachenko yet:

Completely agree with what you're saying above WE, apart from the bit in bold. The UFC is currently a disgrace, just as bad boxing if not worse. McGregor hasn't defended a belt yet and hasn't fought for a year although he's 100% fit - so the UFC are forced to create these bollocks 'interim belts' as loads of fighters are ducking/pulling out of fights, as they refuse to take on the no.1 contender. And there's another problem, they are doing their very best and paying out millions to try and swerve the Ali act coming into their sport as it will straighten out the current corruption, they do not want it at all costs. At the moment they pick and choose whoever they fancy for title fights - you can get a guy on an 8 fight win streak, and they give a title fight to someone who;s coming off a loss or hasn't fought for a couple of years. They're jokers. UFC is really bad at the moment and I'm not surprised those crooks the Fertitta's sold up and got out as they were shitting themselves the Ali act would come in.

Garcia is fighting Broner at 140, and wants to move up to 147 after that. So I can't see him fighting Lomachenko.

Lomachenko would beat Linares, and Rigondeaux (who's too small for him) quite easily I reckon. The stiff challenges could come from Tank Davis (if that's allowed to happen, as Davis has tremendous power) or Felix Verdejo (who I rate really highly). Hopefully, those three all fight each other and make the 135-140 weight classes really exciting in the next 2-3 years. But I don't think it'll happen.

I'm not going to disagree with you Mors, you clearly know more about the sport and its setup than I do (I've only recently gotten into it, around the time I took up BJJ).

All I had meant was that one champion per weight class is the way to go and certainly less confusing than multiples of the same thing.

Boxing has the same problem with swerving fights, look at poor Pulev - still waiting for his title shot while the IBF allow AJ v VK II Money talks unfortunately.

Would both sports benefit from getting rid of the titles and benefit from rankngs instead? Instead of being champion you would be number one like in tennis or golf?

That's the problem, there's so many intriguing fights out there but they rarely get made - or they get made too late. I mean, is there really any interest in Brook v Khan now, yet it looks like it's on the cards now they both have nowhere else to go.

And I agree with you, I think Davis and Garcia are the only ones that give Lomachenko trouble between 130-140lbs.

It would certainly be an improvement on what we have now, but as Mors suggested there needs to be tougher penalties for inactivity.

They could work out a system where you drop places for not fighting or fighting chumps.

They could perhaps make it more like a league. 10 points for beating someone ranked in the top 10, 9 points for beating someone in the top 20 etc.

Heard rumours about some tag team boxing. It's also a rematch of a fight from about 25 years ago, Hughes/Wards vs Athens/Bradley.

We used to do tag team boxing. The venue was moved from my mates backyard following a head injury when he hit the floor hard, it went into the dining room, sans table & chairs. Sadly following a second head injury when a different mate fell into the door frame the venue owners (my mate's mum) cancelled the fledgeling sport.

We still did a few rounds in the summer on the field, but it just wasn't the same.

The WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO etc would lose out on millions and would never allow it and bung the fighters millions to not comply with the new regs, to which they'd have to voluntarily sign up to.
Aswell as there being these multiple orgs, and have all these belts at all the weights, they sometimes have 2 or 3 versions of the same belt at the same time! Like these WBC 'super champion' belts etc. It's mental.

Myself and a few mates had a wrestling match after we had been drinking one night. One mate, a tall skinny bastard, pinned me with his knees on my chest and I think he bruised the muscle between my ribs. Anyway, about two days later I went to sneeze and my body stopped mid sneeze. The pain was fucking excruciating. I've broken bones before but this was in a league of its own.

Like a joke, second rate choice, not sure where that comes from, I remember Bobby "The Brain" Heenan used to use it in wrestling commentary back in the day.

Maybe a reference to ham and eggs as opposed to steak and eggs, who knows..........................or maybe I am just bored at work.

Probably rib cartilage, I did mine once playing rugby, fuckin knackered.

I was at the Copperbox in London on Saturday night, it was hilarious. Although the boxing was pretty good, a mini riot broke out too, and as I was seating on the next tier up it made for great viewing. Bunch of dickheads. This one was on the TV too, so not what the punters at home wanted to be seeing.

I only watch the odd boxing match and don't follow the sport closely but my outsider view is that there is very little interesting in there being so many title fights. There seem to be about 20 weight divisions, generally filled with nobodies and half the fights have about 4 belts up for offer.
