So is Klavan, apparently

Short memories.

While he has his fuck up games he had a good first half of the season and picked up some nominations in the MOTM threads (more than Klavan for example) which point to the fact he had some decent matches. Even in this forum he got plaudits for that. As I have previously mentioned he seems to buck the normal trend of injured players improving in fans eyes during their time out of the team

Not bad to have as back up to Robbo; we need numbers in the squad

Not hating just think moreno is shit. He's ridiculously inconsistent. You just don't know what you're gonna get when he's on the pitch.
Do you know what's going to happen? He'll come on as a sub in the final and score a wonder goal that'll win the Champions League and he'll be here FOR EVER.

I'm ok with that

As long as he never plays for us again after that

He is actually very good as an athlete...fast and has a very good shot and decent crossing. People just have a go at him for stuff that does not even involve him. He had a bad game against Sevilla and thats it. TAA, Lovren, Gomez have all had bad silly moments in multiple games that have led to goals and games lost this season but people are willing to persist with them.

Aside from some of his decision making...in every other way Moreno is a Klopp type player.

Also Klavan has been brilliant whenever he has been the other partner to our main CB in the game.

Yes, he was good at the start of the season and did indeed have some impressive games, before injury allowed Robbo in, and he never looked looked back.

But there's no denying that he's capable of the most brainless decisions, and that's very costly in a defender, regardless of how quick and energetic he is in attack.

Haters gonna hate, but Moreno is a good backup.

I don't hate him. I was actually very happy for him first part of season. I still just think we can get better as he seem to bring uncertainty into the team when he has his fra games now. It is something with positioning etc. But if he improved a lot one summer maybe he will ise this one good as well.

Indeed he was one of our better players until he got injured...

Would you blow 30-40M of our transfer budget to get a Moreno upgrade as backup to Robbo or push Robbo to #2, or save that for a higher priority position?

I know which I prefer

He's happy to be here, seems a good lad to have around and is decent back up for Robbo. We're also a lot less vulnerable if a full back gets beat or makes a kistake now big Virgil is patrolling the middle.
My old man used to be completely blasé about shit wingers like Tony Daley beating our full back as we had Hansen etc in the middle.

Its not about him getting beat though, its about him making a colossal fuck up when no one is expecting it and he's under minimal pressure. That puts everyone on the back foot. I can forgive fullbacks getting done in the occasional one v one, but not when they dive in recklessly, leaving the rest of the defense stretched open. Which him, Lovren and Gomez often do.

That’s why he’s backup.

I saw this about a week ago - and it stacks up with the fact we aren’t being seriously linked with Defenders (other than kids).

We’re not planning on shifting our or bringing in any Defenders this window.

It’s all about the midfield and forward line - with keeper in the balance between a new first choice and a back up.

I’m ok with this.

I made this point a while ago

Was he actually good that half of the season, or was he "good for Moreno".

I know I certainly complimented his improvement....but was he ACTUALLY, tangibly good?

He’s a brain dead liability as first choice, okay as backup. Hoping a youngster steps up eventually to take up the backup position. He can stick around till then. We’re certainly not going to pay a shitload for a Robbo backup.

He's fucking dreadful. He unbalances the entire defence. I'd give him away for nothing, so the fact that he's getting a new contract dumbfounds me.

I've no problems with Albert. Last season he was all over the place, with poor positioning and some dreadful decision making. However, after looking like his LFC career was over and with fans almost unanimously against him, he got his head down and worked very hard to improve his overall game. He seemed like a totally different player at the start of this season and I don't remember too many (if any) major fuck-ups before his injury. As @tombrown points out, we're going to have to spend upwards of £30m for an upgrade that can also challenge Robbo.

And this is the crux of the issue, he unbalances the rest of the defence. He did have a good few months at the start of the season, but he made mistakes when he came back after injury and generally was more like what we'd seen over the last few years. So in nearly 4 years we've had a couple of months that were generally good and error free. That's not good enough even as back-up, if the barometer for back-up is that we can live with them being slightly shit, then we're in for more of the same as this season and last season in the league. Great attacking play, undone by a lack of depth and some seriously poor defenders. What's the point in keeping him, if all his occasional inclusion does is disrupt an improving back line?

I know it's difficult to build a squad and keep top quality players happy in reserve, but surely that's where you look at either seasoned pros as a short term option, or a younger player in reserve (cf what Robertson started the season as). We should always strive to improve and this idiot has had more than enough chances to prove his worth.

Mignolet had a spell of good form and people were ready to give him a reprieve too, look at where he is now. Back in the bin after reminding everyone how shite he is.

Klavan I can live with btw, because he's generally proved his worth and been ok as an option, particularly for the price we paid. I don't think we need him and Matip though, I'd personally look to buy a first teamer and push Lovren further down the pecking order.

We spend 30m on a left back I want him better than robbo and forcing him out the side.

For a backup that's just fucking daft.

Says who? We spent £7m on the defender that needs a back-up/challenger.
He was a miracle signing though.
Robertson is now firmly amongst the best in the league in his position. It’s insane how he’s managed to up his game and fit right in after only a couple of disappointing games.
Credit to him and Klopp. I’m going to believe that the Brain has nothing to do with it :)
