Plenty of people were explaining that homes, businesses & even countries would need energy storage & he had a business that needed to create its own batteries on a large scale already.
So he simply took a huge gamble & made that facility even bigger but scalable up again & once interest took off he did just that & scaled it up again.
Tbh it's the tip of the iceberg, the big money will come when the US & the EU start subsidising home owners to have a home battery, which is inevitable at some point in the next decade imo.
He also makes obvious connections, he saw the interest in hyperloop ramping up, but is not investing anything major as despite his money he is savvy enough to know there's a few ways it could go wrong.
Instead he has invested in tunnel boring equipment, if hyperloop takes off then he'll have huge potential profits, if not then he'll have some profit regardless.
