Corners

As a club which used to have a fanzine called, 'Another wasted corner' I think it's reviving a great Liverpool tradition. Let's hope we'll be reviving another one soon; that of winning the league.

I dont want to see Naby and Robertson standing over a freekick again either. It seems like injury and selection robbed us of a few of the usual set piece suspects, so today was especially bad.

I just can't fathom not beating the first man

I'd rather they balloon it past the crowd than fail to get past the first man

Thats a bit like saying Id rather see players blast a penalty over the bar rather than straight at the keeper.

If its hit to the first man its at least in the right area for a near post runner and forces the defender to make a decision possibly a mistake. Ballooning it beyond everybody is pointless.

But yeah we were awful today, never caused them a problem on set pieces, they do have a ridiculously tall side though. We only have one or two aerial threats so it was playing to their strengths crossing into the box.

It's quite comical the way players - seeing as they can't help copying each other - very carefully try to place the ball on the very edge of the corner arc, as if they're masters of some dark art, and then proceed to punt the ball straight at the first man, as usual. It's as if their brains have been so drained by the prospect of being naughty with the placing of the ball almost outside the arc - ooooh, and I'm doing it right under the linesman's nose, ooooh, I'm so daring! - that they can't concentrate for the kick itself. They need to bloody practice!

I don't get why they do it

That extra 30cm isn't enough for an extra step, so it adds nothing

I think we need a new signal before taking the corner. The one arm raised has now been found out. We need the Red Sox to teach us some new Baseball signals.

Yeah - Andy Robertson squats down & scratches his left bollock - "this one's going to hit the first defender", right bollock - "this one's going over everyone for a throw on the far side", both bollocks "this one will curl out of play before it reaches the goal"

United had a couple of good ones where Fellaini positioned himself so he could have a good run in and then the ball was hit hard into the area he attacked. A hard high ball. Can't be that difficult...

It was funny when after about 10 wasted corners from Robbo, Salah trudged down to the left corner flag to take one to huge cheer from the Kop – only to fail even more miserably (which actually almost took United defenders by surprise). We missed Milner and Trent's quality there for sure. Gini actually produced a couple of good deliveries from the right side; he was the only one to come out from this with any credit, set-piece taking wise.

Think of the best corner taker you have ever seen.

Now go watch every corner they ever took.

It's one of those things that seem much easier to get right than it really is.

Maybe Beckham has trademarked corners and in-swinging freekicks, so everyone else is afraid to get their arses sued. Cos I can't think of any sensible explanation.
