Car insurance dilemma

don't make me get the hose...

Had my car written off yesterday after getting sideswiped by a lorry on the M62. The lorry company (Lithuanian) seem willing to pay for my damages without going through insurance.

I’m not sure if I should inform my insurance company anyway. Obviously if the lorry company doesn’t stump up the money then I’ll have to claim on the insurance. But if the lorry company do pay, will my insurance company use the knowledge I was in an accident, even if its not my fault, to hike up my next premium? I have a feeling they will. The bastards.

At least inform your insurer what has happened and let them know the full details of what happened, explain that you're working with the third party to deal with it privately but if that doesn't happen you will get them to take the reigns with the third party insurer.

You won't get a bump in your premium for informing them, you should do this anyway even if dealing with any claim privately, worst comes to the worst if the third party try to pull a fast one at least your insurer is aware of the facts and can act. This should always be done at least with 24hrs of the incident.

Hope you're ok though mate?

If you have to claim on your own insurance your premium will probably go up. Check you've protected your no claims discount mate, it does cost a little bit extra but worth it, some insurers such as direct line also protect you from non fault claims.

Worst case scenario mate if your premium is affected, when your cover ends shop around using the comparison websites also checkout cashback websites such as quidco and topcashback to get a better deal.

Glad you're ok and hope you're back on the road soon

Yea, I had a claim a good few years ago, but claimed on the other guys insurance (he went into the back of me). My insurance still hiked my next premium as they said I was now 'a higher risk' even though it was the other guys insurance that paid out. Even quotes from other insurance companies were hiked because of it.

I've just spoken to my insurance and they say no time limit on putting a claim in, so fine to wait and see if lorry company settle privately, and if they don't then put a claim in at that time. Have also agreed a price with the lorry company, so lets see how quickly they pay out.

Cheers.

In my experience, your premium will go up if you declare it, claim or not. I've had it happen twice to me. Although by all accounts its a bit of a legal grey area them doing it to you.
I'd be claiming on my insurance straight away, I wouldn't trust the highly suspect company to pay me out, and you have access usually to other perks via your insurance like a courtesy car and legal cover etc if you go down that route.
Glad to hear you're ok though, lucky escape by the sounds of it.

First of all, I'm glad you're ok, Jon.

As for your question, it really depends on your insurer. In theory, your premium shouldn't go up unless you lose your no-claims. Even if he's willing to pay outside of insurance, I assume you got his details? You may need something to fall back on if he decides to change his mind.

Bex had had two non fault claims on her insurance. Both under no claims protection & both not her fault.

Her premiums went up both times & having run a quote with or without them make a helluva difference.

Fucking ludicrous, but there you go.

Update:

The lorry company offer is actually 3 x the value of my car. I asked for a cheque but they want to pay me in cash. I insisted on a prompt payment and they want to get one of their drivers to meet me today on a motorway service station to hand over a wad of cash. All this has been agreed via email from their 'lawyer' in Lithuania, so I have an evidence trail.

Should I be worried that I might be kidnapped and sold to slave traffickers?

An old man crashed his car into my car when I was fucking parked once. My insurance premiums went up, even though I wasn't even driving the car.

Seems well dodgy. Either they have no insurance and are worried you might land them in it or they are planning to harvest you for organs.

Either way I'd deffo take some mates.

Also, if they pay cash then what is to stop you bringing a claim against them anyway? They will probably make you sign something...so read it and check the money is real.

I wonder what they were carrying given they clearly want to keep this on the QT.

Given they're flush with cash also, I think it's safe to say you've rumbled a international drugs smuggling operation

Good luck

Ha. Probably more like they haven't got all their vehicles insured, or (more likely) the driver had done way over the legal daily mileage when he had the accident.

Firstly, they hike up premiums regardless if it was your fault or not, the bastards.

Secondly, this all sounds dodgy as fuck. I'd start recording on your phone in your pocket and nOT sign anything or commit to anything until a bank has accepted the cash.

As you have spoken to your insurance company the next time you renew you must tell them about this accident, even if you settle it privately. They will have logged it and if you don't it will count as non disclosure should you have another accident in the future potentially invalidating your cover. Any fucking chance not to payout- bastards

You have defo rumbled something.. Will be some sort of Human trafficking going on no doubt about that.. not so much drugs..

Human Trafficking - Lithuania

6a00d835795ab169e201bb08048551970d-320wi

Lithuania is a source, transit, and destination country for women and girls subjected to sex trafficking, as well as a source and destination country for men subjected to labor trafficking. Lithuanian children and adults are increasingly forced to engage in criminal activities, primarily shoplifting, in Nordic countries, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom (UK). Observers estimate that 40 percent of identified Lithuanian trafficking victims are women and girls subjected to sex trafficking within the country. Lithuanian women are also trafficking victims in France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Lithuanian women and girls from orphanages and state-run foster homes, as well as women with mental or psychological disabilities, are especially vulnerable. A small number of women from Russia and Belarus are transported through Lithuania en route to Western Europe, where they are forced into prostitution. Some Lithuanian men are subjected to forced labor in the Netherlands, the UK, and the United States, including in agriculture. Men from Bulgaria may be subjected to labor trafficking in Lithuania.

My vision of Jon's trip to the service station goes something like this:

'Ah Jon my friend, it pleases us that you came alone to this service station. We also understand that you are interested in the exchange program. You will enjoy Lithuania very much my friend.'
