Captain’s comments

I have sometimes been lukewarm about Henderson as our captain, but his comments today regarding his needing to earn his place on the field were spot-on and a perfect demonstration of the attitude necessary for all squad members - true leading by example.

He is only an above-average footballer, but improving all the time in the captains role and I am perfectly happy for him to keep the armband - even if on the bench.

And, Milner and VVD are the perfect deputies in the Carra mold.

We have players who can play in my position like Gini (Wijnaldum), who at the minute is doing it brilliantly. Fabinho’s come in, Naby has done fantastically well.

At the same time we lost Emre (Can) – a fantastic player – and Chambo (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) through injury, and Adam (Lallana) is also out but hopefully back soon.

He's done remarkably well for an above average footballer - considerably better so far than the 'fantastic' Emre Can, who can't even get into his struggling national team except when played out of position and has only belatedly made a start for his new club. Henderson called Can "fantastic" not the OP, so it's not really fair to make a comparison. FreshRed might actually think Can's shit.

Good point. I think Can has similar ability to Henderson (different strengths, but overall similar), but lacks Henderson's attitude and consistency. Nothing wrong with the captain talking up his teammates, even if slightly hyperbolic.

Apropos Can - after boring us all for a season insisting that money was irrelevant to him, he simply wanted to play consistently in his favoured position, he makes his debut for Juve and says: 'Do I prefer to play at the center or wide? Positions are up to the coach to decide.' What a whopper.
