Arsenal on Christmas Fucking Eve?!

I hope it doesn't get put on Christmas Eve as I have myself a ticket in the Arsenal end and I might have to pass it up on Christmas Eve as I don't want to be attempting to travel out of London on Xmas eve evening!

So much better for the away fans. The last Friday evening before Christmas FFS.

It's a PITA, but less so than Christmas Eve, not much better, but still better.

Regardless, IMO no games should be played on Friday evenings anyway, but if they are then they should be games that don't have such a long distance for either set of fans to travel, if this were against Utd it'd be much more palatable.

Honestly I don't think Sky care if you've left your shopping til the last minute, and I have to side with them this time.

My issue is that transport is going to be a nightmare on that day with many people finishing work and travelling round the country. It will probably be the busiest day of the year on the roads and trains.

Well it's not as if that will be the busiest Friday of the year for people to be coming back from London to visit relatives for Christmas or anything. I mean it's not that bad, they do put the trains on till 9pm, so if you leave at half time you might have a chance of catching the last one, which will look like something out of one of them gifs in New Delhi

Oh dear God. I used to avoid that "last train out of London at Xmas", but I did it once and it took about 7 hours and was fucking hell on Earth.

And that was without any football fans.

It's cos the new football order don't agree with fans drinking before or after a game. In their world every fan should drive to the match; spend a fortune on a half & half scarf, eat massively overpriced food & coffee/soft drinks at the stadium for an hour before kick off whilst reading the overpriced shite in the programme & club magazine, clap politely during the game, not standing up at any point, buy even more overpriced food at half time whilst perhaps sipping a glass of wine that costs more than two bottles in the off-licence around the corner, before leaving the ground, paying £25 to the club car park staff to get the car, & drive home.

My mate's dad has a season ticket, he lives in Stoke on Trent, he came up for the Utd game obviously. He's taking a break from the ale at the moment & wasn't drinking, but met his son & a few mates in the Globe before & after the game. After the game some lager got spilt on him, he then left & walked to central to get his train.

He goes to walk through the turnstiles & the staff stopped him, telling him he couldnt get on the train as he'd been drinking & Merseyrail & the police were operating a zero tolerance policy on people who had had anything to drink boarding their trains as part of the city's 'dispersal zone' policy. He understandably tried to tell the fella to fuck right off & the rail police or whatever they're called came over & told him he was banned from travelling on merseyrail trains that weekend.

Now this wasnt so bad as he could, & did, walk to Lime street in time to get his train home. However what in the name of fuck is that all about?! You've had a drink so you cant get a train?! Getting the train home is supposed to be an option to dissuade people from drink driving, & to operate a policy like that on the weekend of the Liverpool Utd match?! WTF?!

A few years ago I went to get a ticket at central and the dude was asking how my day had been, all nice and stuff, and I said all good, hadn't seen my bro for ages and just had a few pints with him, and he said, soz, can't sell you a ticket now. I ended up being a right pain in the arse and nearly getting arrested, but yeah, that shit happens.

It's utter fucking insanity.

I get it if it's a gang of pissed up people who are rowdy or staggering everywhere, that makes perfect sense, however if this was a serious & consistent policy it would be madness. No one would be able to get home from the National or ladies day for 's start! Fuck, I got the late train home to Waterloo last Christmas from town & I could barely see I was that fucked, I even bought a ticket despite having a return in my pocket, & I was probably one of the most sober people on the platform!

Dude, a lot of people here have seen me pissed... I wasn't even that, I'd been out for a few pints... but either way I don't get leary. I get silly. The only reason this guy knew I'd had a drink was coz I'd told him. But they must have some policy where they aren't insured or some other bullshit. Either way, as you rightly say, it's hardly going to cut drink driving down if they stop you getting on a train if they suspect you've had a single drink.

If anyone else is going to this let me know and we can get on the beers before. I will be off work and likely boozing from the afternoon onwards!

Simon

I watched that match at 6am on new years day in NZ. That was hard to get up for.
Surely you have a TV service that supports recording!!! Just get up - switch off phone, don't look at the interweb and go straight to the recording when you switch on

I did that in 2011 or 2012, Paddington to Brizzel - absolute hell on earth. I ended up wedged next the bog trying not to inhale! There were about 12 in the loo packed like Sardines, half of them pissed and taking turns to piss whilst i tried to keep out of line of fire. At least my trip was only 2.5 hours (+ 1 hour to normal), 7 hours would have done for me.

I can't do that. For me being on here & messaging mates during the match is part of the match experience now I can't afford to get the game. Of course in the pub with a mate or two is better, but most of my mates are boring cunts now sadly. Watching it 'alone' isn't the same at all.

Yes but you're not facing the propsect of a 5am alarm bell on NYD! I think that is exceptional circumstances.

TBH if you are capable of getting up at 5am on NYD then shame on you :-D

If it was at 5am on New Years then I'd watch it no probs cos I'd just carry on drinking instead of going to bed at 4am!

I'm going to this game, having won the tickets in a silent auction at a charity dinner. Went last season as well with a girl I know from work who invited me having won the same auction and the seats are boss, right next to the Directors Box which was full of reds.

Hope it's as enjoyable as the 4-3!

And are you returning the favour & taking her to the match?

And more importantly, did you get anywhere with her & are you expecting to this time?
