I said at the start of the season I would be happy with 4th and I stand by that. Had we had Mane for more of the campaign, who knows how much higher we would have been up?

If you asked before Coutinho's injury I'd have said no. But of course, given our collapse in the New Year, it is satisfactory if not satisfying if that makes sense.

I'm not satisfied, but I can accept it's a step along the road to a place where I will be satisfied, aka winning trophies and competing at the highest level.

Of course I will, two of the old big four miss out and we take a spot where we haven't been in years where a record number of points was needed for top 4

I think it would be more than acceptable all things considered - and SHOULD provide a base to build from.

I think I read elsewhere that seventy three points would have got top four in every thirty eight game season prior to this season.
It would have got us second last season

I said 'yes' - when I look at the squad size and the injuries to key players throughout this season - it is actually quite good we got this far. But it does hurt that given how well we did against the top teams - we did not do enough recruitment to provide cover for Mane and possible injuries, and also the fact that just before Christmas we were top of the league at one stage.

I'm never satisfied unless we've won a trophy and fourth is the minimum we should have achieved considering where we where at christmas and the way we exited the cups but even if we get fourth we still have to get through the qualifiers and we've never made that look easy at all.
Not investing in january, same old defensive frailties after christmas ,over reliance on Mane and Coutinho and our stuttering home form towards the end of the season all make it a bit anti climactic really and if we manage fourth it's relief rather than celebration.

It's satisfactory, of course. But for this year only. It's not a trophy and it's nothing to brag about but it's where we needed to get to this year.

And it's not done yet so lets hope our bunch of bottlers don't screw it up.

Satisfied is the correct word. We'd all like a trophy so that's why it doesn't say ecstatic.

Considering how many people were thinking we were going to win it before Christmas, what would be wrong asking how they feel now?

Well ... Coutinho's injury fucked us, AFCON & then Mane's injury.

Had we had the front 3 healthy - even with AFCON - we'd have been closer than we are now.

I am satisfied because come Sunday evening if I'm reading we won and we are in the CL then I will be fucking delighted.

I've just written something similar in another thread but I actually do, biasedly or non-biasedly believe, that we were the best team in the league this season we just had fuck all but bad luck with constant injuries and not enough depth of squad. I doubt very much they will even bother to show up at the Emirates and play as it will undoubtedly piss their own fans off but I hope that Everton can negatively affect Arsenal as much as they did us by injuring Mane two months ago... God knows...

We truly deserve to finish top 4 so I really want us to do so, it would be a travesty of justice if we do not get in.

Is it enough? Blimey.... Maybe not I suppose but we can worry about that after we get in there again....if we do so!!! so, for now, I will certainly take it and be happy.

Who's the 3rd? As to what you say, I have said the samein various other threads, but when you had your hopes on winning it, 4th might come as a big disappointment.

The last time we won the league I was 18 years old, the way we played against the top teams this season was fucking sensational and we showed great talent in the team and commitment... and I also thought we might win the league this year...

Am I disappointed we didn't? Well yes... but IMHO we had more crappy bad luck injuries than all the other teams combined.

It is a strange question to ask as a thread eh....

Measured against:
-- expectations before the season - yes; but I'd also hoped that we had another final or two as well to go with it.
-- the first half of the season - no; given how we'd played, I'd have liked to finish top 3 instead.
-- the second half of the season - yes I guess; in terms of salvaging the situation after a bad January and getting back to the pre-season target (still, minus any finals)...

Coutinho-Firmino-Mane for bar AFCON would have probably seen us finish top 2 ... we were that dynamic.

However, once you lost Coutinho ... and then Mane ... and then a post-injury Coutinho ... and then no Mane ... it fucked us good.

If someone offered me the prospect of Liverpool just needing a win to qualify for the CL next season before the season started, I would have taken it knowing that it was against Middlesbrough at home.

However, these are the kind of games we struggle against, and at one point it looked like we would have a title challenge on our hands. Which is why it kind of feels anti-climatic.

Overall though, if we finish 4th, that is progress in my eyes. Next season I'd be looking for more.

They're big factors, but overall fitness is a bigger one imo.

Our players look way more fucked than opposition players who have played a similar number of games do, obviously this has a lot to do with our intensity of play.

Our fitness team has a big job to prevent that from being as much of an issue next season or we're gonna struggle in the final third of the campaign again, maybe earlier depending how many cup games we end up playing.
