There seems to be quite a lot of chatter in the LFC media about who should be the number one goalkeeper again.

Obviously when Karius arrived, he was supposed to go straight into the side, but injury curtailed that, and allowed Mignolet (yet another) stay of execution. When Karius was fit again, we didn't have to wait long to see him displace Mignolet, only to be so catastrophically shit that Mignolet was soon back in again.

So while most of us were desperate for the conundrum to be resolved over summer - not by Klopp choosing one or the other, but by actually buying a top quality new keeper - this was one of many transfer window disappointments.

Rumours of Mignolet leaving were rumbling, but the first game saw Mignolet start as Number One, and then proceed to let in 3 goals. But that's nothing too surprising given how shit the rest of the defence is.

But was Klopp going to swap keepers in Europe? Or the cups?

Then Klopp blindsided everyone with the weird decision to drop Mignolet for the crucial Premiership Arsenal game and play Karius, who kept a clean sheet. But then Mignolet was back in.

It's never been made clear exactly what the fuck that was all about, but given we have once again already got one of the worst goals against records in the league, with only one team conceding more than us, and an average of 2 goals conceded per game in all competitions, it seems as if the debate of Karius vs Mignolet is once again the hot topic, which will be under scrutiny again tomorrow with Karius tipped to start.

So, who should be our number one?

I thought Ming was our best player against City so it's hard to lay much blame on him for any of the goals.

Ming has to be no1 if it's between him and Karius but as I said all summer I'd sell both in a heartbeat as neither are good enough.

I was hoping to see Ward given a chance

We really only addressed 1 out 5/6 key positions over the summer :(

I should really have added a poll, with the three keepers as options.

Little help?

DONE!

Ming for me.

Not because he is better but because i have not seen Karius play often enough. So i'll go for the safe option for now.

But Ming just doesn't give his defence the confidence and his kicking is atrocious. I doubt he can improve much on both aspects.

Karius though, seem to have abit more upside to his game. He looks faster, more agile, jumps higher, kicks better. Despite getting caught in possession countless times against Arsenal, he was TRYING to play the ball as compare to Ming who 80% of the time just kicks it out or to an opponent inviting pressure back. I believe Karius can sort out his problem. But Ming can't, he has been here long enough.

Both are not good enough though, and if we get a good first choice keeper in, I will bin Ming first.

I'm still struggling to get my head around Karius getting tackled three times in his own penalty area despite the opposition barely being able to muster an attack for 90mins.

Yeah. Karius should be placed into cryogenic suspension just in case Klopp gets any stupid ideas again. But Ming is shit. So Ward gets it by a process of elimination.

Is Ming really still that much of a problem?

He makes mistakes occasionally, sure, but he's improved loads over the last 12 months.

Mignolet did a lot of good work and improved at the end of last season, alas it was all undone in embarrassing fashion by that 10 year old kid with cancer or something. It wasn't even a sympathy I'll let you score thing, the kid just looked at him with disdain and smashed it past him.

Well, he is a decent enough shot-stopper, and he has arguably improved his catching and punching. And I accept that our defenders are mediocre and that tactically, how we set up to defend set-pieces is atrocious. So our appalling defensive record and the laughable amount of goals we concede aren't his fault (a lot of the time anyway)

But on the other hand, he's a jittery spastic who kicks like he had polio as a child and instills about as much confidence as Harold Shipman at a Geriatric Palliative Care conference

I'm not a fan of Mignolet but let's be honest Karius shit the bed against Arsenal so there is no reason try that switch again any time soon. Dont know much about Ward but he might get a run against Leicester.

Ming like most people have said because he's better than Karius and Ward is unproven.

I've said it before but I don't get why we recalled Ward when he could have had a season in the premier league as first choice.

Unless he wasn't going to be first-choice there? But yeah, if he was, it seems a strange decision. Although summer was full of them.

Yea possibly or we insisted on being able to recall at any time but I do remember Klopp saying something in an interview about his mate Wagner being on the phone begging for a player. I assumed that was Ward.

Who the fuck voted for Karius?

Must be a German fan.

Rurik?

Ya I'm gutted Ward didn't get a chance to play for Huddersfield after winning them promotion

I'm pretty sure rurik, or maybe it was roopy? Anyway, one of his early fans, described Karius as "tall for a goalkeeper" and that he caught "99% of his crosses" or some such fucking bollocks.

It's Ming for me. I think he's an intelligent guy, and demonstrates that he understands and works on his weaknesses. However, he strikes me as someone who is always caught in two minds - like there's a constant battle raging between his poor instincts and his better judgement. If he had a strong centre back pairing in front of him, I've no doubt he'd be more comfortable, but I suppose that goes without saying. I actually think he'll keep improving throughout his career, but we just don't have time to wait for him to be good enough. I'm not really sure what the point of Karius is. I suspect that he's supposed to be a keeper in the Reina mould (i.e. a sweeper goalie who commands his area and distributes well), but there's been little evidence of that so far. Perhaps he just needs some more time to settle, but having the composure of a traumatised rescue dog is hardly a great starting point.

It's not just a new goalkeeper we need, though. We need a stronger spine, from goalkeeper to central defence, to central midfield. We're brittle as fuck. There are plenty I would replace before Ming, but there's no doubt we need better.

Why on Earth is Karius starting. We need some fecking stability. This rotation of keepers is like have joint managers. Some things you can't do.. very amateur by Klopp (I know, said some guy on the internet)

I think I'm maybe losing or have lost the plot but the Mig has grown on me this last 6-9 months. He's actually alright yanno.

Ming. He's decent, no more, no less. Don't know why Karius is playing, why should he be guaranteed games, he's shite. If he fucks up, Klopp will have invited the criticism coming his way.

I have zero confidence that he will catch anything tomorrow.

Mignolet clearly first choice, but I think karius will do well tonight

I think Mignolet has at least shown he can improve, Karius seems full of arrogance and mistakes. As said, I don't think our leaky defense helps, and Ming is generally a good shot stopper, so he has my sympathy at times when he's so unprotected and exposed.

I'm not sure if any of them are good enough, but then I'm not sure the best keeper in the World, wouldn't be made to look shoddy in this setup.

Karius has been here a season and missed a good chunk, don't think it's fair to imply he couldn't improve. He came here with a great reputation and was a solid keeper. As usual, I think our defence is as culpable for some of these keepers jitters

There was an interesting stats piece from someone on twitter (Dan Kennett i think?) and it shows the xG (expected goals, based on some algorithms) for Huddersfield to concede last year and he was suggesting the stats pointed towards Ward actually being pretty below average against what would be expected i.e. conceded more than he should have been, even though they did on paper have a tight defence.
