Liverpool have left Xherdan Shaqiri out of their squad to face Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday because they want to "avoid any distractions" that may be caused by his Albanian heritage.

Controversial, perhaps.

Thoughts?

Shaqiri isn't exactly innocent, he's liable to start something with his double headed eagle celebration like what he done at the world cup.

Would have loved to see his celebration but it would surely put our fans and players at risk if so.

How come Lovren's allowed to go then? Isn't he in the same sort of danger because he's Croatian? I know who I'd back to keep his composure out of the two and it isn't Dejan.

Erm.......what?

Not pissing off our Serbian supporters by putting a Kosovar nationalist who has been known to make inflammatory gestures while on the pitch.

We're not likely to need him to win, hence leaving him at home.

I wasn't being particularly serious though.

Can't risk losing the cash cow that is our huge Serbian fanbase, although they might be useful if we require some genocidal ethnic cleansing doing.

I think the relationship between Croatia and Serbia is a lot less frosty than that between Serbia and Kosovo-Albanians.

If Shaq isn't on the bench I wouldn't be surprised to see Divock given an appearance.
Yes and why not. This is a good move..even if he did behave you can still see one of the Serb supporters throwing some dodgy object at him. This is a good mve by the club.

The night off or a few thousand people booing and throwing things at you?

In light of this, he really should have started against Arsenal in a 4-2-3-1. Klopp really didn't make a good choice there – maybe helpful in long term for Fabinho's growth, but far from optimal for this particular game.

Agreed. But that would have seen us drop Milner, which wouldnt have been a good idea either.

I'm afraid I don't agree. Their defence was there for the taking (the fact that we didn't play well enough to manage it doesn't change that), playing our usual front three was clearly called for (IMHO of course) and we needed Milner in midfield to balance the side properly. With respect I don't see that the inadvisability of picking Shaqiri in Belgrade should have been allowed to override those factors.

Well, yeah. If he's going to play Fabinho, especially in an important and tough away game like this, you'd want to give the player every chance to excel, and that means 4-2-3-1, and having Fabinho right next to another deep-lying CM.

But let's be honest there doesn't have to be a huge difference between that and 4-3-3, just that you need to have an AM in that middle three. It's not like our usual front three is very orthodox anyway.

All that aside, anyone worried about Fabinho's ability and versatility, especially against quicker, better midfields were given plenty more ammunition. He was dreadful.
