I think the lack of compactness that Klopp was talking about was once again due to Fabinho not being comfortable as the sole #6. He clearly had instructions to get forward more and be aggressive, but this resulted in him being out of position too many times and thus our midfield was cut open repeatedly. I don't blame the player – it's just a part of getting used to Klopp's system; remember how badly Hendo looked in his first few games at #6? But this time, if Hendo was fit and played, I think we would have won this game because of far better midfield balance. I wonder if @Modo will agree with this? :)

In the 2nd half Klopp felt like he had no choice but switch the formation back to 4-2-3-1, mostly for Fabinho's benefit. Overall this switching of tactics led to a ragged, uneven performance – yet we still had enough quality and class with the likes of Van Dijk and Salah to feel hard done by the draw. Last thing I want to comment on is that Firmino seems a bit jaded – not sure what the problem is, but it's strange to see him plainly out of gas by the 70th minute. Given how pivotal he is for the system, that's another factor preventing this team from flying like it was in the 2nd half last season.

Reading on twitter that the lino who disallowed the goal today is the same one who did the fist pump when he persuaded Moss to give the peno against us, in the Spurs match last season.

i don't think it was but I would easily be wrong

Sorry missed the game. But I still wouldn't have picked Hendo.

Feels a bit shite, but in the end its a good point gained away.
We’ll be third after Sundays games but will have played 3 very tough away games.
Still unbeaten after 11 games. Insanely good start.

that's ok - just don't expect to win the league.
We still can obviously do it but if set our standards to a point where we are content with a draw, while leading with 9 minutes left, then we're not going to do it (which is why the players are gutted as per Milner).
City were drek on Monday - and yet they pulled out a 1-0 win.
That's why they're going to be ahead by 2 points by day's end tomorrow.

City will lose enough points over the season. Have faith. I'm made up with us this season. We're a fucking hard team with VVD. We'll pick up points we've no business getting.

Yeah it's mad saying it so early and after having such a good start to the season, but I don't think we can win the league. I just can't see City dropping enough points.

^^This..
City are another level above us. You know that Barca level a few years back when they win everything and anything in site, yep that level.

That's the level we are competing here, Any other year without city in the equasion our form would be champions elect form...

I agree, I'm not content. It just puts it into some perspective the huge strides we've made over the past 12 months defensively and are on a par with city as per the table says. For that reason we will be a hell of a lot closer to city, not the 20 plus pts it was.

in case you forgot, they're managed by fucking dracula so there's no problem if you want everyone in their stupid team DEAD

Where has our press gone ? Klopp mentioned it was lacking in the post match interview but it wasn't just this game. By easing off slightly we have solidified our defence at the cost of possibly our major attacking strength, winning the ball deep, either in the opposition half or at least around half way, and scoring more goals. It seems to me like the pendulum has swung too far back the other way, I hope Klopp fixes this soon and we don't have to wait a season to reassess.

With a much larger squad we have the numbers to press more than we are doing, even City & Spurs are pressing more than we are this season ... I remember we were 2nd to Spurs and roughly level with City last season on pressing stats, I'm sure a number of teams are far ahead of us this season.

Possibly this is a topic for another thread.

Despite not playing well, we hit the post twice, had a good goal disallowed, and Mane was just inches from making it 0-2. We should have won.

Arsenal arguably played their best game of the season, at least effort-wise. They didn't have that many chances, the only good one they put away.

This was the first game I was worried about this year ... and it sucks because we should have won, comfortably ... the 'goal', VvD's chances etc ... I'm gutted but I don't see City getting less than 95 points ... that means we can only lose 18 and we've already lost 6 with less than a 1/3 of the season gone. I still believe but my blinded "we'll win the league this year" phase isn't as blinded as it was ... and this is before Dreamy comes with his shit.

Arsenal 1 Liverpool 1: Match Ratings

Alisson: 7
The save in the first minute is really good, you know. Like, really good. Doesn’t do anything wrong for their goal.
Trent: 5
Struggled like fuck. Touch was off, legs were off, head was off. Off. That said, their whole tactical plan first half was to get after that wing. Could have done with some help.
Virgil: 8
Literally could have had a hat trick. Sublime at the back. Not really sure what went on with their goal, there. Think it just might have been a good finish that the lads couldn’t do much about. Great defensive line all day.
Joe Gomez: 7
See above. Faultless but then conceded a goal which was no one’s fault. Faultless?
Andy Robbo: 7
Played well, up and down, consistent option.
Fabinho: 4
Fucking hell. Spent the morning cleaning the shower, there. It’s one fucking gobshite of a thing. Yer, yer, one of them massive big, stupid, bin-lid head things. Sound yer. You ever tried cleaning the tiles with a massive, big, stupid, bin-lid headed shower? It puts water in one direction, straight down.
Basically blerted biocide all over the tiles and then spent fucking four hours before kick off scrubbing dry tiles with biocide on them. Was light headed, think I burnt me throat out with acid, proper whitey material off it. Reckon I would have got about the pitch better than Fabinho there first half, with one lung, and a burnt out throat, so that if I drank water it would pour out the back of me neck.
Fuck me, looked like he’d run the ground straight from the paradox. Anyone fancy telling me Henderson is shite in comparison to him? Reckon I might hunt you down and fucking burst you, to be honest. Had to change our formation to protect him, which literally impacted on our ability to win the match. A problem.
James Milner: 7
Scored a great goal there, in that he hit it and it went in and all hell broke loose. Felt sorry for the midfield playing next to someone probably three or four levels below what was required. Plugging holes, choosing passes that he wouldn’t need to do if he had a proper fella playing next to him.
Gini: 7
Had a lot to do. Like a lot. Like two fellas’ work. Possibly three fellas’ work. I don’t fucking know. Played well though, Gini. Played well.
Mo Salah: 7
Dangerous, weren’t he? He’s not as good when he plays upfront as opposed to on the left of a three. We need to fuck that off, really.
Sadio Mane: 7
Thought he was poor, first half. Had opportunities time and again to get after them, but didn’t. Poor touch, poor decision. Whatever. Better second half.
Firmino: 7
Gets an extra point for playing centre mid second half to look after his mate.
SUBS
Henderson: 9
Fuck off.
Shaqiri: 6
Legged it, gave it away once. That is all.
Matip: n/a
Big giant purple one. Got a hazelnut inside him.

I listened to much of the first half on the radio, and watched the game from the last 10 mins of the first half onwards, so I missed seeing most of the offending passage of play in respect of Fabinho. From what I saw Gini was really struggling in the first period too. I think that Klopp got it wrong tactically in this game. I'm not saying Emery bossed it tactically (as the narrative will surely be in respect of this rat-faced new darling of the sports media), because we could have had a hatful of goals ourselves– however, Arsenal managed to create situations where they marched through our midfield with impunity at times. I think the players created their chances and held onto a clean sheet for much of the game in spite of Klopp's tactics yesterday. I'm a Klopp fan, but yesterday was not his finest hour.

I suppose we've seen for ourselves that that level of pressing isn't sustainable across a season without incurring injuries and a squad that looks increasingly exhausted. Across the Xmas period, for instance, it is just too much work winning games through this high energy tactic, particularly if you don't have the depth of the likes of City. So I'm actually glad we're winning games by other means this season. We do seem to be storing energy, winning with the least possible levels of exertion. That being said, surely we can reignite the press for key fixtures like this one? I'd like to see that we still have Heavy Metal on the Klopp playlist.

I haven't owned a radio in years, but I did listen carefully to Klopp's post-match comments and have to agree with your analysis of the game.
