Behind City at the end of the season.

CL or not that's a pretty fucking big gap.

Even second placed Utd are 20 pts back with a game in hand.

Of course we are going to invest in the summer but so will others.

Can anyone realistically challenge City or have they broken the league now?

Would be shit to see the title race done by November two years in the bounce but 25pts fuck that's massive.

Nobody has defended the title in a decade or so. Provided we keep the decent part of the squad and make 5 additions we can give them a go.

That's because there were arguably no truly great teams in England in the past decade. This City team might be the first to build a dynasty domestically, even if they don't win the CL with Pep. Finishing above them to win the title would be a massive achievement.

Nobody has won the league by 20 points in a long time either.

I think we can close the gap but 25 points is obscene

We'll , we need to hope that City aren't quite so brutally efficient next season. We need this one to be an outlier and for them to drop 10-15 points next season combined with a sinilarly serious upturn for ourselves

Unlikely but Chelsea have done a brilliant job going from league winners to retards the following season in recent years so maybe City can too?

Very different clubs on so many levels.

Here's hoping but I don't see it.

If anything they'll improve.

[article]Points after week 2: 4
Manchester City come back to draw at home to Everton - but they still drop valuable points only two games in. Huddersfield and West Brom sit above City in the table[/article]

[article]Points after week 3: 7
City go behind again, but they come back to win 2-1 at Bournemouth, courtesy of a 97th-minute Raheem Sterling winner[/article]

[article]
Points after week 6: 16
City score 16 goals in three games, thrashing Liverpool, Watford and Crystal Palace
[/article]

[article]Points after week 15: 43
City win three games in a row 2-1 - against Huddersfield, Southampton and West Ham. Each time the team plays below par - but each time they score their winner later than the 83rd minute. In two of these games they come from behind; in the other their winner is scored in the 96th minute[/article]

[article]Record breakers in week 37: 97
City reach 97 points - a Premier League record that hasn’t been hit in 25 years. The closest yet was the Chelsea team of 2004-05, which claimed 95 points. With 105 goals scored, City also broke the League records for the most goals and most wins in one season[/article]

Had it not been for our thin squad and recent champions league fixtures we’d be 9 points better off.

Hopefully teams will try and have a go at them next season instead of choosing to go for damage limitation. And De Bruyne gets injured.

It has been mentioned they could do a Chelsea and collapse the following season.

I dont think City will improve on the points tally and the League will be much closer with a few teams fighting for the title next season.

Hopefully other teams will take note of how to set up against City, not backing off but actually having a go at them.

We’re also forgetting that Pep is his own worst enemy and will surely be changing something that has been working this season.

I can see the difference between the top 6 and the rest of the League getting bigger mind.

I dont see Chelsea collapsing next year like they have previously but I cant see them being as insanely efficient either. Guardiola will throw more resources at Europe even if it means dropping points domestically. This team has raised the bar and will almost certainly strengthen over the summer. I reckon it will take 90 points to beat them, that doesnt seem possible for any other side in the league currently.

Plenty of teams win the title easily, and everyone else starts moaning and crying and doing Chicken Little impressions about how nobody else can compete and they'll win it forever and dynasty this and that.

We had it ourselves in the amazing first season of Beardsley, Barnes and Aldo, with joke articles being written that we'd start the next season with minus points to give everyone else a chance. And we know what happened then.

The most concerned I got was when Mourinho and Abramovich looked unassailable, and that first crushing league victory was followed immediately by another. But that too fell apart.

It's really hard to retain the title. Chelsea did it, and the only other team to do so is United (who did it twice and won it three time in a row beforehand), and they're the closest thing to a title-winning "dynasty" there's genuinely been in the last 20 years.

So yes, the bottomless pit of Arab money seems to position City as the club "most likely" to dominate for the next few years. But this league is unpredictable and competitive, and it's unlikely that we'll see anything like the Juve or Bayern situation, with seven titles on the bounce or whatever, because they're in shit leagues with hardly any competition.

When you spend half a billion every summer on players, you should be winning it by at least 25 points. Until this is rectified (never, FFP is dead) then I can't see too much change unless Pep fucks off to someone else with an open chequebook.

Exactly.

City equalling or topping a record breaking season again ? I don't think so. A lot has to go right to achieve that and I'm pretty sure Pep will be going all out for the CL. A lot of their players had amazing seasons : De Bruyne, Silva, Sane, Sterling etc. and you'd be asking them to perform to that level again, I'm not sure all will. The only worry is that they will strengthen their defence in depth, leaving not many weaknesses across the team/squad.

However that said the difference between title winners and 2nd/3rd is often decided by head to heads so for us and United (I expect Chelsea to lose Hazard and drop off and Spurs remain treading water, maybe even losing Eriksen or Ali or Poch) the gap is eminently closable with deeper and better squads to make winning against the rest of the PL teams more consistent.

It should be noted we had a very poor away record against the other Top 6 teams this season (I think it was 0-1-5) and that with Keita, Fekir (if it happens), or whoever else we get to strengthen the midfield and defence, I don't think that will be the case next season. We are easily capable of adding 15+ points or more to this seasons total and City drop off 6-10 pts. Next season could be very close IF we may the right moves in the transfer market and add up to 5 quality players to the squad (3-4 starters).

Can see a title race between City, Utd and ourselves. Spurs might lose Pochettino and maybe one of their top players, and who knows what will happen at Chelsea. Hazard could be off, and they have a bit of rebuilding to do of that squad but their transfer record and approach have been very off for a while.
Arsenal could fall further back by not being in the CL, new manager and a team that needs rebuilding.

The only thing that is for certain is that there will be spent a shitload of cash this summer on players in the Premier league.

All true although arguably they have the best coach around at winning leagues now.

And I don't see City winning 3/4/5 on the bounce but I certainly can't see us bridging 25 pts

Major quiff.

The world cup may have a huge effect on next season.

It often helps to balance the playing field quite a bit.

Unfortunately our relatively small squad (actually, not relatively, just fucking small) may well count against us next season.

I've had a thread idea in mind about the way Klopp plans for the future & risks sacrificing the present to do so for ages, which covers some of this & why I think he's aiming at a full on league challenge in 19/20, I'll try to get round to it in the next week or so, requires a bit of research to back up my points (to make sure I'm not talking out of my arse!) so just need to find the time.

I can’t see spurs joining the title race next season. I read that they need to pay off their new stadium in 5 years so that’s around £200 million a year. They won’t have the resources to spend big. Not like they do that anyway without selling.

Fuck City... them and their fans are a bunch of fannies.

Dynasty.... my hole.... They’ll get a harsh dose of reality next season - the plastic flag waving mercenary pricks.

Fuck that they'll get it in 2 weeks

Their fans don’t understand Europe - it means nothing to them.

They been in 1 Final & about 2 other Semi-finals in their history - it’s like asking fucking Port Vale fans what winning the Premier League would be like - they have no fucking idea... none.... nadda.... zip...

That's not true. They pretend it doesn't.

Spurs won't lose Pochettino or any of their top players, so they'll certainly be in title contention, and it does seem rather odd to dismiss them, given they've just finished above Liverpool again. Like they have for the last four seasons.

Arsenal's squad hasn't needed much for the past decade. A decent manager and a couple of big signings and they'll be better than this season by a long way.

Wenger has been his own Moyes, which was very considerate of him for the next guy coming in.

We'll be adding quite a number of new players this summer I reckon, but do we have that many players going to the WC?
From our first team: Hendo, Firmino, Salah, Mane. The big issue is obviously that our entire World class attacking trio is going.
Salah and Mane could be going out after the group stages but it could see us needing to have a bit of a different set up when the season starts...

They need quite a bit in my opinion. GK, CBs, midfielders. With no CL footy they'll be signing up and coming players though their new sporting director pinched from Dortmund. Will be interesting to see who they appoint as manager though.
