Insignificance

So we are closing in on the season, and there will be changes to the goalies. Ming will defo leave, and Karius will not be settled as a back up the coming season. Do we bring in a New back up (and who would come to be back up anyway?) or do we load off both goalies and bring in a New number 1 and a back up?

Personally I feel fine With Karius. He looks confident, he is both a good shotstopper and commanding in the air. His distribution can probably be better, and his positioning is sometimes a bit of a worry, but all in all I believe we will have to break the bank again if we are to replace him. Maybe those Money are better spent elsewhere.

I say keep Karius as number 1 and get a decent back up.

I'd agree but didn't something similar happen with Ming? He ended the season really strongly and looked like he didnt need to be replaced then went full nervous wreck again next season. Karius looks good enough now but should we risk it?

This thread needs a poll

Personally I'd work with him and show him faith. He could save us a fortune - we could boost our squad in other areas if we stick with him. I wanted to see how he'd cope with a few games and atmospheres, such as at Old Trafford and Goodison and the Ethiad semi-final, and he looked fine through it all. We already have back up with Ward.

Unless we can guarantee an absolute fucking stonker of a keeper, it's a bit much to bin him

Alisson looks decent, but not much more than that. Oblak, or maybe donnarumma

Otherwise no

Kee him. Credit where its due, a settled back 4 and he looks a top prospect.

Im actually pushed to think where we need to strengthen of late. CB beside VD.......DM (as always) other than that?

Keita and one of Henderson/Milner will play every week then we have Ox/Lallana/Wijnaldum.....LB is sorted, Clyne and TAA at RB.....

Not changing ANY of the front three.

I dunno. Depth I suppose.

I wouldn’t say LB is sorted. We need another to give Robertson a break. Unless one of the kids is a great prospect who can play 1 in 4 and not look out of place.

Get in a good CB that can rotate in unless we are serious about Gomez moving to that role - then i'd expect him to get more chances as Clyne & TAA rotate at RB.

Let's flip this around; Are Man City fans still happy with Ederson? Started the season commanding presence but is now in the brunt end of conceding 8 goals in 3 games. Is he still a great keeper? Granted the goals might not have been his direct fault, but does he make De Gea-esque stops too?

I'm starting to think maybe we can think about allocating the money for a keeper to other positions instead at the moment. This might change based on whether we face Allison at this point onward in the CL.

This is where I'm coming from.

Ederson was poor yesterday & has made karius look a bargain.

We could shell out 70m on Allison & he turns out to be a dud. If you could guarantee he's the second coming on De Gea then perhaps, but, tbh De Gea is more of a 'line keeper' like Mignolet (although obv miles better) & our style suits a keeper who plays out & likes the sweeper keeper role, I've not watched Allison to give an opinion on how he plays.

Having a better keeper would raise our chances of winning a trophy by more than virtually any outfield player could.

Agreed, but there's very few "elite" keepers at the moment l, so perhaps we need to accept we can't get that much better

Even Madrid and Barca have got decent keepers, but not brilliant

I look at it as a now or never decision. A new keeper now would be coming into a pretty good team, lots of positive vibes, confidence, belief, everything, which will give him every chance to succeed. In a years time that might not be the case, so even if a hatful of elite keepers suddenly come onto the scene in 2019, you just know if they come here they'd be torn to shreds and be completely shot within the first month.

If Karius proves he is good enough to be our #1 goalkeeper, you have to say it would make his £4.7 purchase from Mainz one of the bargains of recent years. But is it too good to be true?

The real eye-opening stats, however, come when you look at Roma’s xGA. They’ve conceded 14 goals in Serie A this season but their xGA has them down at 20.5.

The opposition are creating chances worth 1.05 goals per game but Roma are conceding just 0.72 on average.

Oh fuck me they're immense stats.

AND he's a sweeper keeper.

Yeah, spend whatever the fuck it takes, we need him.

Our last purchase from Roma has been pretty average. ;-) Are we sure? Sign him up as long as he's average if we play them anytime soon.

I think going after Oblak or Allisson is still a good move but if we're not after a keeper in that bracket, hold with Karius and strengthen elsewhere. Look at the state of our bench this past week - pretty dire if we suffered any more injuries.

Karius all the way - not wasting money on a goalkeeper so we can go through the process of abusing him as soon as he puts a foot wrong - happens all the time at this club - we could spend 100M and if he has one bad game - we will either turn him to a 2M goalkeeper if he is of a weak mind. No way - totally agree with @darkstarexodus reasoning with regards to the lack of quality depth on our bench. We are one injury away from not having any options in midfield or defense.

I voted to go forward with Karius but how many first XI positions can/are we going to improve upon?

Front 3 - none
Back 4 - possibly another cb but very possibly none
Midfield - keita is coming, maybe another

It mostly looks to be depth we need. Is it possible that we'll go very close in the league next season and rue not having that De Gea level keeper that's worth an extra handful of points.
