As usual, I try to include only players who have been more or less credibly linked with us; Portuguese and Italian newspapers are mostly disregarded as sources.

Goalkeepers:
Alisson (AS Roma, asking price £60M £70M £80M)
Oblak (Atletico Madrid, €100M release clause)
Butland (Stoke)
Cillessen (Barca)
Pope (Burnley, £18M)

Centre-backs:
De Vrij (Lazio, signed for Internazionale)
Pavard (Stuttgart)
Lenglet (Sevilla)
Leite (Porto)

Full-backs:
We don’t seem to be in the market for one, for once

Deep-lying playmakers:
Jorginho (Napoli, £45M+)
Max Meyer (Schalke, free)
Lewis Cook (Bournemouth, £20M+)
Ruben Neves (Wolves)

Other central midfielders:
Fabinho signed from Monaco for £40M with €5m in add-ons
Ndidi (Leicester)
Wanyama (Spurs)
Doucoure (Watford)
Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio, asking £70M+)
Lemina (Southampton)
Dendoncker (Anderlecht)
Berisha (RB Salzburg)

Attacking midfielders/playmakers:
Lemar (Monaco, signed for Atletico Madrid)
Maddison (Norwich, signing for Leicester)

Aouar (Lyon)
Draxler (PSG)

Forwards (any position in front 3):
Werner (Leipzig)
Pulisic (Dortmund, £80M+)
Fekir (Lyon, £53M deal agreed, then collapsed)
Ousmane Dembele (Barca, £88M+)
Bergwijn (PSV)
Moses Simon (Gent, £10M)
Shaqiri (Stoke, £12M)

I think Real Madrid players should be in a separate category. If any of Isco, Ascensio, Keylor Navas etc become available, I think there will be a long line of suitors and LFC probably among them - but their availability depends solely on Madrid’s internal politics and their own summer targets. So unlike most of the others on this list, Real players are not really “on the market,” but things could change quickly, so you can’t rule them out either.

Did I forget anyone?

UPD: I added the color-coding, to show my very preliminary and imprecise assessment of whether the player in question would be an immediate improvement over the current first-choice LFC players in his position. Remember, it refers to current level, not potential. Red for instant improvement, orange for competitive, yellow for squad player, green for youth player.

A note about categories by position: it's hard to be precise there since many players can play in multiple positions or evolve from one position to another over time. I make a distinction between "deep-lying playmakers" and "other central midfielders" since the former is such a narrow specialist position. In Klopp's 4-3-3 system DLP usually plays in front of the CBs and "other midfielders" are stationed higher up the pitch. The distinction between "attacking midfielders/playmakers" and "forwards" is the most fuzzy one – my test is this: can the player in question play in midfield 3? If yes, they are classed as the former (Oxlade, Coutinho, Lemar, Draxler etc), if not, then it's a "forward" whether he plays in the middle or on the wing.

OK, it’s only February, but already the pace of the transfer gossip is picking up to the point I feel I need to try to make some sense of it in my usual thread. Piotr Zielinski.
Gelson Martins

We are continually being linked with Dani Ceballos, I've seen him on youtube and the guy is really skinny and slow to be a success in the PL. What's your opinion?

good work, as usual, rurikbird but i look forward to the above being totally ignored and this thread becoming a dumping ground for any and all detritus found anywhere

Wasn't too impressed with what little I've seen of Ceballos.

Are we linked with Zielinski this year? Gelson falls under the category of Portuguese press bullshit; don't think I've seen this link confirmed elsewhere.

With the market as is it is, what's the value such a player, £60m, £70m? And with the experience we've had with Italians, is it worth the risk?

He's Brazilian. We've been linked with him even before Klopp, wish we bought him 3 years ago when he was available for 10M or something.

He was born in Brazil but moved to Italy when he was young. He plays for Italy so I guess for all intense and purposes he is Italian. I'm not seeing he is not good, it's juts that with our history with Italians do we really want to take £70m risk? If we do sign him then I truly hope I am wrong, but if Mancs go for him, I hope he turns out to be a shower of shite.

Who will also leave in the summer?

Can (free)
Ming (10m+)
Lazar (???)
Sturridge (£20m)
Ings (£25m)
Lovren (£25m) if we get another CB
Henderson (will probably be asked to be sold if we DLP, as he would not want to be a bench warmer)
Moreno (£20m only if an offer comes in of that magnitude though I could see Klopp keeping him as a squad option)

Sturridge won’t go for 20m, neither will Ings for 25m. I doubt Lovren will be sold even if we get another CB, and certainly won’t command 25m if he did.

You need an awful lot more RED than you've given !

Hendo wouldn't go, he's Liverpool through and through now and I'm sure would take the bench and occasional games here and there - which would suit him with is medical issues.

Probably taking age and market conditions into consideration most of those other fees are close to the mark. Maybe Moreno will go too (£10m) especially if we manage to get Sessegnon (please, please).

I'm trying to avoid "grass is greener on the other side" effect. We have a lot of strong players, there are not too many on the market that can reliably improve on what we have. Even someone like Pulisic, who is awesome and will cost a shitload, how can I write that he is better than anyone in our current front 3? The best rating I can give him is "competitive".

Same for someone like Milinkovic-Savic – awesome potential, but too young and inconsistent for now to say he is instantly better than what we have. Jorginho gets red because we don't have a specialist DLP, so he'll add a new dimension, no doubt.

Well I can understand being conservative but these surely are all red ....

De Vrij (Lazio, free) : better than any CB we have bar VvD.
Werner (Leipzig) : better than Ings / Solanke / Sturridge
Ndidi (Leicester) / Wanyama (Spurs) / Doucoure (Watford) / Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio, not that we can get him, there'll be a host of top teams after him come the Summer, but at £70-90m he's not better than Hendo, Wijnaldum & Can ?) / Jorginho (Napoli) : we don't have a DCM of any sorts so all are improvements on Can (leaving) + Hendo.

Any of those (bar Werner perhaps - and even him too if Firmino were to take over the deep lying #10 or advanced #8 role (which is basically where he plays now more often than not) improves the team.
Not that I'd really want to change our formation but we need better cover than Solanke & Ings and which top striker is going to come here if he's not given a place in the starting line-up. 4 into 3 at least is far better than 3 into 3.

My criteria is comparing to current first teamers, not squad players like Ings or Solanke. And no, I don't think Wanyama is a better player than Can and while I like De Vrij, I didn't see him enough to confidently say he's better than Matip/Lovren, both of whom looked a lot better prior to joining Liverpool...
