I thought Spurs was the first game when Karius finally looked like a Liverpool goalkeeper (in a good sense, obviously) - not only thanks to some key saves, but also because his distribution and decision-making were almost always spot-on; he was aggressive without being rash and but for the 2nd (IMO unjustly awarded) penalty he should have taken the plaudits for winning us the game along with Salah.

Being the #1 goalkeeper at Liverpool FC is probably one of the most ungrateful jobs in sports: the fans and media scrutiny is relentless and often viewed through the prism of past disappointments (which in the goal-keeping department are many), while our traditionally attacking playing style with irregular, but usually catastrophic defensive breakdowns seems perfectly designed to destroy any semblance of rhythm and confidence of any but the most psychologically resilient keeper. I have to admit - after the Man City game I myself was so irritated by the 3 soft goals we conceded that my first reaction was that I didn’t want to see Karius play for Liverpool ever again. I was somewhat surprised that Klopp stuck with him, but I think now that the decision has been made (and so far vindicated not only by Loris’s solid game vs Spurs, but also by Mignolet’s pitiful showing against West Brom - in all likelihood his last game for the club) we as fans should try to get over our anxieties about the GK position and support Karius wholeheartedly until the end of the season. His performances in Germany and our coaching team’s faith in him indicate that he has talent and at the very least he should be able to play much better than what he showed in his stop-start LFC career so far. I won’t sugar-coat his mistakes, but I’ll try to be as positive and supportive of Karius as I can until the end of the season. Who is with me?

I said the other day I'm willing to give him a clean slate. Now he's behind an organiser , I'm hopeful we'll see the best of him

Yeah he was good. But I bet you he will be punished one day for those 20 second sequences he holds the ball.

He still should have caught the cross which he punched out to Wanyama. You couldn't have expected Wanyama to score so well from where he did but that doesn't excuse a Goalkeeper not catching a tamely hit and within reach cross. Goalies like Karius and MIgnolet will continually let you down because they are just not good enough.

That punch for 'Wagamama's' thunderbolt was shit. I want my keeper catching that, or minimum push it wide.

Take nothing from the strike, but it was palmed back into thr danger zone.

He must have some hidden talent, surely Klopp can't be totally fucking clueless about goalkeepers?

I heard somewhere that they are trained to punch those out rather than catch them, I don't know if it´s true though.

I just think that he´s been through a hailstorm of criticism and overwrought training and deserves a lot more time than he´s had.

If he's been trained to do things like that then you have to question the training methods then. As for him receiving criticism ,well that wouldn't have happened if he had appeared in any way competent. Most people were sick of Mignolet making mistakes and welcomed a change of goalkeeper when we bought Karius but he hasn't been an improvement and makes just as many fuck ups. Ask yourself how many games has he had where you thought to yourself Karius was outstanding in that game and if you can name more than one then you have a better memory than me.

He´s looked like a rabbit in the headlights. for too many games, but I blame the over meticulous training. They´re trying to think of ten different things whilst the ball is coming at them at sixty three mph. No wonder they´re freezing.

Nearly every pundit said the same thing...they are trained to punch it out these days. I dont blame him for that goal.

Mignolet has had more than enough chances to disprove the notion that he's not up to standard. Karius hasn't exactly inspired confidence but I'm glad he's getting a run in the team in order to prove himself.

Karius punches it away, can has a chance to clear it and misses, Oxo makes no attempt for it

Multiple people I'll criticise ahead of karius

He's clearly improving as his confidence and familiarity with what's expected of him increases. Is he good enough long term? Seriously doubt it. We've had one top class keeper in about 30 years, it would be so nice to buy someone who's fucking brilliant.

What choice do we have but to hope he doenst have a fcuk up, which is proably likely.

Yeah. I understand the enthusiasm, which veers into desperation, for Karius to be a top goalkeeper for us. The levels of hype when he joined seemed as much about finally getting shut of Mignolet, rather than any detailed knowledge of his quality.

But he's been fucking dreadful far too often for me to be anything other than despairing of him. He is jittery, erratic, and is utterly HOPELESS under any type of cross or high ball.

So I have no hope at all that Karius will ever be good enough to carry us to the title.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was dropped again before the end of the season.

I admit that I wasn't ever really convinced, in fact back in 2016, I said this about his performance against Swansea, and we WON that game:

(4) a dithering, hopeless calamity. Utterly rooted to the spot; whenever a high ball came into the box, or even the 6 yard area, Karius stood watching and totally useless. So fortunate not to concede more than one. If this is his level, we've replaced Mignolet with an even worse keeper.

I don't trust a good looking goalkeeper, and Karius has a very pretty face. He's an Instagram Keeper.
Is he really going to put himself in harms way for crosses, throw his body in front of shots etc.
I want my keepers to look like Steve Ogrizovich (one for the older posters).
This is why I was initially positive when we signed Mignolet as he ticked that box.
The Top goalkeepers through the years are no oil paintings.

Schmeichel
Kahn
Reina
Courtois
De Gea

Lets make do with him until now, then ideally find a top rated keeper who's a bit of a minger in the summer.

I'm going to hope he proves me wrong this second half of the season, but unfortunately despite the encouraging signs against Spurs, I don't think he'll ever be good enough for the simple reason that he looks like an average shot stopper, even Mignolet looks leagues ahead of him in this regard.

I bought Oggy 40 B&H once when he was dining in a restaurant I worked in as a student. He drank and smoked like trouper and he was still Coventry's number one.

They are, it's because the balls now 'swing' in circular motions as they travel as well as moving from side to side, it can make catching it much more difficult when it's hit at pace.

That movement is much less an issue from floaty corners that drop though, so I'd like to see keepers catching it from corners a lot more often.

He needs games, at the end of the day he needs some time to adapt to the way GK position is played in England....

You are under a lot more physical pressure in this league than anywhere else.

What we need is a camera that calculates the spin and deviation of the ball in real time, and an algorithm to process the data and determine whether it's better to catch or punch, and then some vibrating chips in the keepers glove. A vibration in the punching hand = punch, vibration in both hands = catch. Karius wouldn't need to engage his brain in this scenario.

Is Mignolet still going to play the CL matches?

If Klopps going to back Karius let him play all the matches. He needs to stop rotating the keepers and the defenders.

Voted on support no matter what. Klopp has made his decision so we might as well get behind the player.

After the season is another story and I suspect we should be looking for a new keeper but it does no one any favors to not get behind Karius for the run in.
Yeah, at Anfield the collective intake of breath when the ball is passed to the keeper or he comes out to make a simple claim can be heard from the TV mics so it must be way more noticeable there.

That in itself would be cause to give me some nerves & can't be helping, no matter how understandable it is.

I thought Pepe Reina was a bit of a hunk, actually
