I thought Spurs was the first game when Karius finally looked like a Liverpool goalkeeper (in a good sense, obviously) - not only thanks to some key saves, but also because his distribution and decision-making were almost always spot-on; he was aggressive without being rash and but for the 2nd (IMO unjustly awarded) penalty he should have taken the plaudits for winning us the game along with Salah.
Being the #1 goalkeeper at Liverpool FC is probably one of the most ungrateful jobs in sports: the fans and media scrutiny is relentless and often viewed through the prism of past disappointments (which in the goal-keeping department are many), while our traditionally attacking playing style with irregular, but usually catastrophic defensive breakdowns seems perfectly designed to destroy any semblance of rhythm and confidence of any but the most psychologically resilient keeper. I have to admit - after the Man City game I myself was so irritated by the 3 soft goals we conceded that my first reaction was that I didn’t want to see Karius play for Liverpool ever again. I was somewhat surprised that Klopp stuck with him, but I think now that the decision has been made (and so far vindicated not only by Loris’s solid game vs Spurs, but also by Mignolet’s pitiful showing against West Brom - in all likelihood his last game for the club) we as fans should try to get over our anxieties about the GK position and support Karius wholeheartedly until the end of the season. His performances in Germany and our coaching team’s faith in him indicate that he has talent and at the very least he should be able to play much better than what he showed in his stop-start LFC career so far. I won’t sugar-coat his mistakes, but I’ll try to be as positive and supportive of Karius as I can until the end of the season. Who is with me?
