Will Argentina fail to qualify for the World Cup ?

On the cusp of failing to qualify for the World Cup after drawing 0-0 at home to Peru yesterday.

WTF ?!

How can a team with Messi, Dybala, Aguero, Di Maria, Higuain and Icardi on your team score only 16 goals in 17 games (Brendan's take on CFs / goal scorers will be interesting here).

Table and permutations for qualification (or failure) here :

Whilst it would be hilarious to see them fail I'd much prefer to see Messi & co at the WC, which would be greatly devalued without them.

I don't think it would be devalued at all. If these players aren't shining in these qualifying games, they're unlikely to shine in the finals should they squeak through. If they're ineffectual now, they'll be ineffectual then. They're not in a good team. England are already there, so the football world doesn't need any more teams to stink the place out.

Of course, what was I thinking. Regardless of what Argentina, as a team, do or do not do, a WC without Messi wouldn't be devalued at all.

Neither can I but regardless he's the best player in the world, why on earth would any lover of good football not want him there ?
Well if you can't remember what he's brought to the table before, and they're shit now, you won't be missing anything.

You may get your wish. Their last match is away at oxygen deprived Ecuador (Quito) who are currently just 5 pts behind them (though out of the running for a WC slot).

Argentina haven't won in Quito since 1960 I've just read. Not sure how many games played but presumably at least once in each qualifying cycle.

Wouldn't think so - for that to happen they'd have to have been drawn against Ecuador every single time.

Even so, it's a surprising stat right enough.

Well - there are 10 teams in South America, and they play each other home and away. It has been that way for at least 6 world cups - only exception being 9 teams playing each other when world cup hosted in South America. So Argentina have played several times in Ecuador since 1960

Watch FIFA hastily reconfigure the playoffs to ensure Messi & Co are at the World Cup, if they don't qualify through the South American Group.

Has he done anything of note in his previous WCs? Genuine question, I can't remember.
He won player of the tournament I recall

To which everyone thought was a fucking joke, and devalued the trophy, because he was mostly shite

So, tbf, I kind of see your point, and on a large agree with it

Same as Gerrard, Messi rarely (if ever) transfers club ability to national level.

Too many egos to let talent shine

Argentina are annoyingly poor - they have so many good attackers.

Should've won the World Cup a few years back too.

It's like saying the World Cup missed Rush because Wales never qualified, but he was in a shit team and wouldn't have got any service, let alone a chance to make a mark on the tournament. Look at Kenny, Souness and Hansen - they did make it but hardly captured the imagination because Scotland were shite. If Argentina somehow contrive to get there, it won't be the Messi of Barcelona, it'll be the frustrated little beardy bloke who bombs out after three poor games.

He scored a last minute winner in the group stage in Brazil although contrary to Popular belief he's stats for the tournament were worthy of winning player of the tournament.

I hope they get there. Just because they struggled to qualified doesn't mean they won't light up the World Cup or that they can't win it.

They were so close in 2014.

Christ, you'd think he played for United with that defence pat
Ha ha. True enough but anyone who would rather Messi not be a World Cup may as well stop watching the sport. If he's not the GOAT then he's at least right in the mix of the discussion and every fan should want to see him on the biggest international stage.

A World Cup without Holland and Argentina will not be the same and if Ireland fail to get there too it will be all the worse for it.

All three sets of fans are always superb at big events.

The world cup doesn't need big teams with great pasts and mediocre presents. It needs the old little teams, with players who don't even know how free kicks work, to provide a bit of comedy in the early stages when most games are dire and predictable. Plus you need those teams if Scotland qualify again because the Scots are forever damned to be embarrassed against them. Everything is so micro-managed at tournaments these days it needs a bit of amateurism to breathe some life back into it. Step up, England!

So.... can we get Canada in? We'd provide some polite behaviour and shocking defending en route to a three-and-out, eh?

121 games, 58 goals.
Only Messi could be criticized with that kind of record for his country.

Just checked his club record. 521 goals in 594 games for Barcelona first team. Bloody hell.
