Life after Coutinho

It's looking like a question of when rather than if so what does this mean for the team?

It'll be hard to get a like for like replacement in as there is a reason that #10 types generally end up on the wings - they're luxury players. Coutinho works hard and has proven he can fit in as an actual midfielder.

I'm not sure Firmino is cut out for that sort of role and the likes of Mahrez (whose name came up in the match thread last night) are definitely out of the question unless the intention is to play them further up the field.

So... where do we go?

Mahrez was playing deep as Leicester like to hit on the break. Some of the balls he hit would be ideal for Salah and Manè. If Roma can afford him then it should be a piece of piss for us to get him.

Mahrez isn't a like for like replacement, but he's a match winner in his own right, and I suspect he would have a very strong impact.

Alli, Isco, Lemar, Eriksen would be ideal like for like replacements. But obviously we won't get them.

But I wouldn't get too caught up in a getting a like for like replacement. Coutinho is great, but isn't definitive of the way we play.

I'd be pleased if we got Keita + Mahrez to replace Coutinho. We'd have to alter our formation slightly, but I think overall we'd probably have strengthened.

Having said that, I have zero faith in our ability to get such deals done.

Maybe I am reading too much into Raganick's comments re Keita and how he is resigned to losing him next year as he wont sign a changed contract.
Was that the first chink of pragmatism and was it the start of accepting that an extra thirty million on his fee this season might be worth considering?
I'd be surprised and disappointed if we weren't putting out feelers there again

I'm a bit apprehensive about our qualifier. No Coutinho or Lallana means we lack creativity. Also, I don't expect the Coutinho situation would do any good for team morale.

We need someone to step up and be a boss.

Hopefully we wont have to think about that until next summer. Which should give us good time to find his replacement. As Dmishra says, another type of midfielder could be just what we need. Not a like for like replacement.

I was thinking January might be more likely

PSG have signed some good young players that might be wondering if they'll get a chance now:

Goncalo Guedes
Giovanni Lo Celso

At Shaktar there's the highly rated Viktor Kovalenko.

Max Meyer of Schalke.

None of those would be Danny Rose approved but there are plenty of options

I would have thought Lemar at Monaco is the most obvious candidate. Arsenal made a couple of earlier bids so presumably they had some inking/encouragement Monaco would sell?

Lemar + Keita (in time)?

The AM position is generally chock-full of talent across Europe, so there shouldn't be a problem getting someone with potential in.

The trouble is Coutinho is 25 and at the peak of his powers. To effectively replace his 'impact', we'll need to sign someone similarly experienced.

We can't be waiting 2-3 years for a prospect to develop. That's a rebuilding process which will lead to more of our better players leaving.

I genuinely don't think the team as it stands is many steps away from being capable of winning trophies. We need to avoid a rebuild at any cost, because that will certainly close the window of opportunity we have with Klopp at the helm.

Because of the thread title I'll mention this... My dad died during the week, and my mate just rang and said, oh mate how are you coping, and I said I don't really know, it's awful, and he said mate I don't know what to say, and I said, I know, he only signed a new contract a few months ago.

Oh how we laughed.

Sorry for your loss(es?)

I thought his fee had rocketed. Sure I saw €100m mentioned somewhere.

I can't tell if you're being serious or setting up up the joke but if you are, really sorry to hear that mate.

Sorry for your loss Woland.

I dont really think it matters who we sign. Until these fucking lizards sell to a Gazillionaire who doesnt care about dropping £300m a season we are done for.
Mcmanaman
Owen
Torres
Mascherano
Arbeloa
Alonso
Sterling
Suarez
Coutinho

Whoever we sign who gets good wants out. Because these scumbag owners give zero fucks about winning things. Klopp isnt good enough to compete with unlimited budgets elsewhere. No manager is.

Either we get a sugar daddy or accept that all we will do is compete as also rans. We are Sevilla in a world of Madrids.

We cant keep our best players, we cant sign the best players. So who cares who we sign.

An inconvenient truth.

If you knew that the lizards would go ok... Mahrez for 40 and William Carvalho 40 and keep on with any other targets we have then I wouldn't be that arsed.

But no one is saying that. I can't believe West Ham are thinking of activating Carvalho's 40m euro release clause, and we haven't even sniffed. Mahrez wants out and the same. Get them two, fuck the little cunt off and let's get on with the season.
